Please help! Sick biewer baby :( I just got a new baby on Friday. It was a three hour drive to get her home, and she vomited in my lap on the way. I got her on home and offered her water and food, of which she ate very little. But she was being playful and did a good deal of whining when I put her in her crate. She slept all night, and woke up Saturday playful, crate clean, and still eating very little. I took her to my vet for her introduction/checkup along with her shot records. There was no record of her being wormed, and I figured he knew what he was doing. He shoved a half tab of Drontal plus down her throat with water, and although she wasn't happy, she seemed fine until an hour or so later. She started throwing up brown liquid so much that I took her to the emergency clinic, where she tested neg for parvo and had no worms. They gave her a shot of Reglan and prescribed her metronidazole and metoclopramide. She never stopped drinking water but would not go near her food. She finally stopped vomiting yesterday evening after I added a little charcoal to the water, but she is completely lethargic and eerily quiet. This morning she kept down her meds and some honey I gave her, but vomited once right after drinking a lot of water. She has had more water since then and kept it down. She urinates frequently and has had to dark, semisolid (not runny, but kinda sticky) bowel movements. This is torture for me. I know she needs more than water and honey, but can't handle and doesn't want food. My playful sweetie has done a 180 on me. She only sleeps, sips, and eliminates. What can I do? |
Take her back to the ER Vet fast. If she has dark, tarry stools - this could easily be life threatening. Not to mention dehydration, age, etcetera. |
The vet said to put charcoal in the water? Maybe that is causing the dark stool? If a small pup is lethargic from not eating, you probably need to go ahead and get to the ER. The sugar she is getting needs to be balanced with protein. And she may needs fluids given by a vet. |
No, he didn't tell me to do that, I could never reach anyone at his office. I decided on the charcoal and giving her pedialyte after doing my own research. At the emergency clinic she had her only bm yesterday, the only difference was that is was runny. They also saw the vomit. They told me how to administer the meds, and to bring her back if she got worse. She just vomited again after having some broth. I really feel like I need to take her back, but from your responses and their reaction to having seen it first hand, it sounds like animal care in my area is just crappy. Almost like they sent her back home with me to get worse so I'd have to bring her back, and then they take all my money. |
I don't know if the animal care is crappy. However, I think he should have pulled the vet records first. Dark/black stool (in humans) can mean internal bleeding. So, this baby needs to be taken to an emergency vet again asap. Poor thing needs comforting. She must be terrified. |
She needs to go back. They could have given her fluids, but may have thought it wasn't indicated. The drugs they gave are drugs used here all the time. I've used both many times for my own dog for GI upset. Time to go back... |
Yep...stop with the charcoal and honey and go to the emergency vet! Good luck! |
Yes I would take her back to the ER for sure! They can put fluids under her skin and that can help hydrate her! They could put her on an IV too. I would think she needs to be eating...perhaps syringe even. :( I googled and found metoclopramide - Potential side effects of metoclopramide include diarrhea, fatigue, and frequent urination. Did they test for Giardia and coccidia? |
I hope your puppy is doing better. Please update us. I aggree with the others, a good Vet and the right treatment is needed ASAP |
I\'m hoping you are at the EVet and just want to share I feel so bad for you both! My little girlie, Bambi got really sick a few weeks ago and my vet gave her a shot to stop the vomiting and one for the runny pooh. She told me to not feed her anything...no food or water for an hour or two so her stomach calmed down and then to offer her small frequent bland food; cooked chicken breast and rice. It worked for my girl. Please do talk with your vet again! Sending thoughts and prayers to you and your little girlie. Please update us on how she\'s doing when you can. |
I hope your baby is doing better. I always recommend keeping some puppy Nutrical on hand with these babies. The first few days after I brought my babies home, they were a little shy on eating - an adjustment to their new home I know. I gave them a tiny bit of nutrical a few times a day - in the morning, mid-day, evening, and before bedtime. It was like puppy crack to my little ones. The nutrical ran me about $10 a tube. I don\'t know if you like your vet, but my vet took the pill and had his tech grind it up to a powder and add a flavor liquid. I gave each puppy a small amount from a dropper twice a day for 7 days. They thought it was great - when I picked up the bottle they were both very excited. |
Checking in for an update. What did the breeder say? How is the puppy tonight? did you go back to the Vet?? |
The first vomiting could have just been car sickness. Snowballed down hill after that.:( |
Is the puppy ok? |
So sorry your baby is sick and I hope you went back to the vet!! Please update and let us know how she is doing! *Hugs* |
