Hot Rod not feeling well

Have you scheduled an appt. to get some blood work done?
Hopefully whatever it was has passed, but what happened to his gums is not normal and a major concern. If it did go hypo, what if it happens when you are sleep or out of the house? I'd wonder if there is an underlying something or other going on.

U know, Princess was never able to digest raw carrots. She would get a little speck of blood & some mucousy poop after eating them. Maybe Hot Rod might have a sensitive digestive tract like her.

The shaking thing might be because he wants his mommy to baby him. I'm not kidding you, Mimi used to do it to me & I'd make such a big fuss over her thinking she had low blood sugar or something spooked her. But she'll be fine when she sees grandpa a minute later, wagging her tail & bringing him her fav toy to play. hahaa

If he's eating his food, I don't think you need to give him anymore karo. Don't want him sugar crashing either. Hope Hot Rod will be back to his normal self very soon!

I'm thinking it's his glands because he is walking with his butt in the air a little bit. I'm going to take him in tomorrow when I am off work. He's been eating like a bandit and pooping almost back to his normal schedule now and driving his sister nuts again.

I should have said that I cook the carrots first. I don't like giving raws cause I worry about them biting of too big of a piece and possibly choking. Hot rod loves his carrots.

And wouldn't you know it...I found my Nurtical...it was right where it was supposed to be, with the rest of the upkeep stuff for them--frontline, heartworm stuff--I just didn't see the tube.

Please don't think that I'm taking this lightly, not at all.

Do you thinkt that I should have get blood work done? His last bloodwork was in Feb. when he went for dentals.

His gums are usually not pinky pink like Maggies anyhow, although they were on the grayish side that night. I am wondering if I didn't administer the karo right the first time as I was smearing it on his mouth instead of is gums. the next day when I gave him some more, I smeared in on his gums and he did seem to perk up quicker and was more alert than the first night.

I'm not opposed by any means to taking him in but I am wondering if I didn't do something correctly. he's eating and pooping almost back to his schedule.

I need to stop by the vets office to visit my friends yorkie who's in with his diangosis of kidney failure and will talk with my vet about hot rod.

We all have different comfort levels as do our vets.

Adult Yorkies should not suddenly go hypoglycemic after eating very little for a day. The fact that the sugar did help the gum color would suggest that it was a sugar issue. That shouldn't be. So yes, if Ellie's gums went grayish and Nutrical helped, I'd be wondering why because it is not normal. And for it to happen twice and the sugar to help twice, I'd be very concerned that there is something going on here.

I'd wonder why an adult dog suddenly can't regulate blood sugar. So yes, I'd be doing bloods unless my vet could give a very good explanation about why it happened.

The other symptoms could have been anal glands. Not sure how weird gum color would go with that.

I agree that an adult dog going hypoglycemic is not normal and I'd be running bloddwork.

I agree about the low blood sugar after a day of not eating as there have been other times he's not eaten and no problems. I started trying to remember his eating habits when this happened...he's always been fussy and picky but to the best of my recollection, he was eating, at least his breakfast. I usually have my breakfast as they eat because they will not eat unless I sit with them. and as far as I remembered, he was eating.

I will definitely speak with the vet when I go. I am hoping to get there a little bit when I take my lunch break.

I agree. He's always been a picky and fussy eater but was actually thinking that he was imrpoving as he's been eating his breakfast. Dinner was/is okay, he goes back thru the night as he doesn't finish it up right away.

The other thing that was different was the nature's logic that I was using for treats, I wonder if that contributed to any of this as he had mucousy poo when he finally pooped. He seemed better after he did. (??)

JMHO: Sounds as if it may be an intestinal issue. Could he have bitten off a chunk of the bully stick?

With his intermmitant symptoms, it sounds like something may be trying to move through his system and does for a bit, then stops. His hypoglycemia is a bit of a concern too.

So a hands on exam by the vet would be on my list of things that may need doing. Then he can decide if bloodwork or an xray might be needed. They can tell alot just by palpating them.

A partial blockage may have been the cause of the sugar issue.

Anal glands usually affect behavior more, unless they abcess then you have to deal with infection, fever and such. But they usually don't run around playing on and off either...

spoke with the vet when I stopped by the office and she said we should do a baseline test and she will examine Hot Rod. She reiterated what everyone has said that he one meal/day should not have caused the episode. We have an appt tomorrow so I will also have his glands done then and we can see if they might have caused anything.

This vet has Hot Rod's primary vet since we taken him there, after his neuter @ 6 1/2 mos; he's now almost 4. He does sees 2nd vet there when she is not available. The good thing with the 2nd vet is that she shows, either Norfolk or Norwich terriers-I can't remember which. So between the 2 vets, I can say that we are in good hands.

I will update once I know know more.

I don't think he swallowed a piece of bully stick...he chews on them but usually will stop after a few moments and it only looks likes it's been gnawed, not broken off--I usually look at them after Maggie swallowed a piece one time. I did give them Nature's Logic kibble as treats while doing tricks with them the night before and this was the only different thing that was given. I know that this may sound silly, but they get Stella and Chewy's freeze dried patties, can the kibble have been hard on his system and caused this? That particular day I know they didn't get treats as I was not home; they just got their regular meals.

Just thinking, two days before, I also gave them a new brand of sweet potato treats. My neighbor gave them to me. They are round shaped and hard as a rock. I cut them into smaller pieces and gave them these. The pieces are in at least 1/4 size or smaller. I wonder if this could have caused some kind of blockage. I did see a bit of orange in the mucousy pooped. These treats were given on Wednesday as I worked on Thursday so I wasn't home.

Glad to see Hot Rod is feeling better. I think I would feel better if bloodwork was done. I tend to be a bit of a worry-wart but would fear that an underlying problem might arise again.

Yes, anything that is unusually hard and dry can possibly cause a blockage. My Sapphire had issues with 1/4-1/2 inch long but very thin coconut chips. I gave them to her one at a time, and she appeared to chew them... haha... they came out two days later, clumped together all in one piece. And she did go through two days of being a bit bloated, and not acting right. She had been having a few BMs a day, so I wasn't too worried... but I did watch her like a hawk! I was about to run her in to my vet when she finally pooped the chips out, and seeing them all stuck together, it all made sense. None of my other pups had this problem though. Also, she always ate most of her meals, so I never noticed any other changes with her.

I'm so glad you're getting bloodwork . You just never know w/ these kiddos; it can be so scary. Keep us posted!
