| Peanut is losing his hair!!!??? Peanut is losing his hair. I took him to the vet and he says that it is an allergy, probably to fleas??? I use frontline, although I hate putting this stuff on the dogs. The yard is sprayed, I even spray my house. But, last night when I gave hime his bath, he had fleas!!!! Tink has them too. This is driving me crazy. What do you use to keep fleas away? We are in Georgia and it is SOOO hot. And of course, it is always humid here. Perfect conditions for nasty parasites. Vet says, I need to switch to another topical. WHich one. There are so many. Advantage? Advantix? I saw another one in my Jeffers catalog and it is Fleapro (I think). Same thing in Advantage. So... Any ideas what I should do? How can I get his hair to grow back????

| Did your vet recommend anything? If I was using Frontline and it wasn't working (assuming you're applying it every 30 days exactly and not touching the application site or bathing for 24 hours, making sure the dog is completely dry before putting it on etc.) I'd switch to Advantix if the problem is bad. **If you have a cat though, I wouldn't use it, I'd go with maybe something oral instead - check with your vet for a recommendation. You also need to clean your home really well - wash all bedding and blankets your dog comes in contact with, vaccum every day for a while etc. I'd stay away from anything generic even if it says it's the "same ingredients" as a vet recommended brand, I don't trust them in general and you don't want to mess around if the problem is this bad. As far as the hair growing back - it should just come back on it's own once the flea problem is fixed. **Have a stool sample tested by the vet - tape worms are common in dogs that have fleas also. Fleas can be a really pain, but once you've been diligent in applying a preventative product for a few months and cleaned your home well, you should be flea free as long as you keep using the preventative consistantly as directed. I know you said you hate putting the product on them, but a problem from fleas such as the allergies your little on is having is far worse than the very small risk of using the product itself. Good luck, hope your furbaby is feeling better soon.

| I'd do Advantage and Program if Frontline Plus wasn't working. ..unless you need something for ticks too.

| Oh - forgot - you mentioned Advanitx? or Advantage? - Advantix will also take care of ticks, while Advantage is only for fleas.

Thanks for the advice. Vet gave me the choice and told me to order it myself as he did not have any advantage or advantix in stock. Most of his customers use frontline plus. I do put it on ever 4 weeks, don't bath for 24 hours prior to and after applying th frontline. I don't understand why it is not working. Maybe my fleas are immuned!!!

| Advantix alone does not contain an IgR (insect growth regulator), so this alone may not meet your needs. (it's just an adulticide)

o.k. now I am really confused...but, it don't take much. What else would I need? When you say adulticide, it only kills adult fleas? Keeps them off? I need to do flea research...goodness

| Yeah, you really do because it does get confusing. Adulticide kills adults. Usually if a product is an adulticide alone, there will be claims that it kills them so fast that htey won't really reproduce, and if they do, the new adults will be killed. However, sometimes this isn't enough. Just depends. An IgR kills the larval stage, sometimes eggs, stops adults from reproducing or whatever. Fronline is fipronil (adulticide) Frontline Plus is fipronil and methoprene (adulticide and IgR) Advantage is Imidacloprid (adulticide) Advantage II is Imidacloprid and something I can't remember the name of (adulticide and IgR) Advantix is Imidacloprid and permethrin (adulticide and something for ticks and mosquitos) Program is lufenuron (IgR) Then there is Revolution and Comfortis, but I don't like them, so I don't take time to remember the specifics except that Comfortis is Spinosad (adulticide). Permethrin isn't always the chemical of choice. It can make pups feel like something is crawling on them. If you want something for ticks though and Frontline isn't working, then that is the next in line. Advantage alone may work for fleas, but for some an IgR has to be added. You could go with Advantage II for that. Since I haven't heard much about the particular IgR in it though, I learn toward Advantage and Program (or Advantage and Sentinel since Sentinel already has lufenuron in it). If there is a tick issue there (which I think there is - love your state but it's buggy!!), then it wouldn't be wrong to go with Advantix, but be prepared to add an IgR in if need be (which is a lot of drugs). Trial and error...

| When Levi was on frontline he got Lymes disease. I only use advantix now and have never even seen a flea.

Oh no!!! Is he o.k. now? How terrible. I have not had any ticks on my yorkies. But, we DO have them here. Ellie May worte: (which I think there is - love your state but it's buggy!!), then it wouldn't be wrong to go with Advantix, but be prepared to add an IgR in if need be (which is a lot of drugs). Trial and error... Georgia is the worse state for bugs...I think. Have lived here all my life, but, I have never seen this many bugs in other states. I hate to add alot of drugs to there tiny sytem. I am scared to, to be honest. after the ivermectrin incident with the goofy vet...that got no reprimand... I am so scared of chemical stuff. I will do what needs to be done. I just wnat to be safe.

| Ditto. I have used it for many years and never had fleas! It also has never caused any problems for any of my pups. They are all healthy and fine!
