I can only say what I would do. If it had been just liquid stool, then I'd do what the vet is saying. If there was a little bit of blood in it, I'd also do what the vet is saying. I just would not be comfortable with the amount of blood that came out. He is probably perfectly fine. Maybe a virus or something.. In my mind though, I'd have a hard time justifying that. So I'd personally get an xray. Wouldn't jump into an actual barium series. Although if it is clean and he still isn't right tomorrow, then you may have to go that way and would have already spent money on the one today. I'm really not sure what most vets would do in this case. I would worry too much overnight if it was Ellie... But as long as you do have a 24 hour ER close and are going to be watching him closely, then you can probably skip it today. I would get up several times overnight to check on him. |
I was thinking too at least an x-ray before going home. I think holding off on the barium is a good idea, as I wouldn't want him to ingest anything that may aggravate his system and possibly cause it to bleed again (if that is possible, not sure, bc not sure of the cause) but the important thing now is that the bleeding stops so I would procede with caution. Not sure an xray will show anything, but it's relatively inexpensive to do, and you never know... something may show up. I would check the yard upon returning home though... |

I honestly don't think I'll be getting much sleep tonight, so checking on him often won't be a problem. But, I think I'll worry too much if I don't have at least an xray done....I'm going to call back and have them do that now. I know they do that digitally and the results are immediate, so I'll know before I pick him up in a few hours. Thanks again, Crystal. I'm glad to have your input. |
Just seeing this & had to skip to end hopefully to see updates. So sorry Maddox is going through this. Sending Prayers that it's nothing serious. He's in good care. HUGS! |

I hadn't thought about the barium aggravating his system, but that's a very good point. His test results all came back just I'd hoped they would, but now I'm at a loss for what to do next. I NEED an answer for this. Is it possible for just a virus to have caused something like this? |
Aww Bonnie - I'm happy to hear that Maddox's bloodwork came back with good numbers. Poor baby - I'll be praying for him. Seeing that blood is scary but I think your vet sounds like she's on top of things. Mia had something similar a few years back - it was that irritated intestines thing. She was put on anitbiotics and later a new kibble - which has worked wonderfully - even though it's not a food everyone considers "good". ;) Keeping you and Maddox in my prayers. |
Bonny, I think you have gotten some good advice. I think I would have insisted on the xray as well. Still sending prayers. |
If the intestines are just irritated, the vet may see some slight changes. Xrays are actually an amazing, quick way to take a quick look at what is going on. Of course not everything shows up, but it's better than nothing. And by some slim chance it's an obstruction, xrays minus the barium are still very useless in diagnosing it in a lot of cases. |
Yes, it could potentially be an infection. I assume the vet will send home drugs just in case. He is current on his parvo vaccine, right? Doubtful because his bloods are normal... |
Our Maltese had these same symptoms a few weeks ago, very scary almost pure blood. The vet ran all the test and said he could no find anything wrong. That he must have eaten something and it would have to pass his system on it's own. He gave us the probioics and something for the diarea and an antibiotic, just incase of secondary infection. He perked up fast and was back to normal in a couple of days. Hope your does the same. We never did figure out what he could have eaten. |
Oh Bonny, I'm just seeing this. I hope everything turns out well for Maddox! |

I asked her about an antibiotic but she said he has no fever and his WBC is normal, so no antibiotic just yet. |
Just wanted to wish your baby well, sounds very scary. I hope he is all better soon. |
