| Fractured Ankle-heel area Question Hello everyone My little Libby 10 mos old had an accident yesterday. She was jumping off the couch, when DH was getting out of his chair. Don't know if she hurt herself when she fell or he stepped on her, it happened so fast. He feels so bad. Anyway, she has a fracture, nothing through the skin. Thank goodness. I got her in right away. The Dr. took a lot of xrays. After the xrays he had to sedate her a little to get a wrap on it. He said he was able to straignten it better than he thought it would go, and he wrapped it tightly with an ace from the hip to the toes. Then he did another xray with the wrap and it looked nice and straight. He suggested that we go to the U of Mn to have it wired. This will cost up to $3,000 plus travel and lodging. They cannot do it here. He did say also that maybe, being that he got it alligned nice and straight that it could grow cartliage and heal itself. I will go in on Friday, he will take a look at it again, do an xray and tape it again, and keep doing this every 5 days if it is healing. What do you think of this? Please if anyone has gone though this, could you give me some suggestions. I would think that someone would have gone through this type of thing. When my little Mari was under a year, she had a knee that went out. He suggested that I get the surgery, which I didn't. I just didn't let her do any steps or jump on anything for over a month and it healed itself, never another problem. A gal I know had the same thing, did the surgery for over $1,000 and it didn't help. That is part of what I wonder, that being so young that she can heal herself with a lot of TLC... Hoping for your help.....Thank you, Cathe |

| I would take your vet's advice and get a second opinion from an orthopedic vet. The bones in the ankle are so tiny plus circulation to the extremities isn't that great, healing may not take place. The best window for healing is in the beginning. The longer you wait, the less chance of healing. Sadly, we have had members who waited too long with broken legs that did not heal and that window of healing was missed. At that point, amputation was the only option. Is it possible for your vet to send the xrays to the vet school for a consultaion? It's very easy to send digital xrays. |

This pup definitely needs to be seen by an orthopedic surgeon. It is not the same as a knee. That was probably luxating patella and surgery would not always be totally necessary. A fracture is nothing to mess with. I have sadly seen many pups with amputations because of the wrong care of a fracture.

| Hello, I am so sorry for your pup. Sadly, I am going through the same thing with my Peyton...the fracture is on the growth plate in his left rear leg. I am taking him to Purdue to get an expert opinion, and if they recommend the surgery we will do it. Please keep me posted on your pup.

| This is something that definitely needs the attention of an ortho surgeon. General vets can tell you when something is wrong, but they aren't always clear when it is surgical and when it isn't (all they need to know is how to support the pup until getting it to a surgeon if needed). Growth plates in a young dog pose a pretty big problem. It isn't something that really can wait a week or two if your vet things your pup needs to be seen by the surgeon. It does need to happen asap (tomorrow preferably).
