Sick little girl... :[
 

Hello! this is my first post to yorkie talk. My name is Alora and I brought home my first yorkie almost 3 weeks ago or so. Her name is Alice and she lives with me, my boyfriend and my little boy bun, Zentor. So the first week we had her we saw that she was having loose stool. I took her to the vet and it turns out that she has giardia. now I found this out about 3 days after bringing her home. so I started her on albon and metronzidial as giving by the vet. Now Alice only weighted 2.4 lbs the first time we brought her to the vet, so I got a the meds special made for her size. I gave her her first dose of meds and about an hour later she started throwing up white foam and having watery poop. I would have rushed her off to the vet but it was almost 11 at night and she was drinking water so i figured that I would just bring her first thing in the morning. I feel alseep around midnight and when i woke up at 7:30 and opened her cage i saw her limp as could be just lying on the floor. i picked her up and she wasnt moving so i tryed to put some water in her mouth. then i called the vet and rushed her over, speeding and bawling my eyes out. i ran in and gave her to them. I found out a couple hours later that the meds that were special made were made too strong and she was posioned by them. she was on and i.v. for two days to get her system back in order. mind you by this time i had only had her about a week. so 800$ later I contact the breeder i got her from. I told her that she had giardia and her other pups should get tested. I also told her that she almost died and had to have special treatment which cost me about 800$. i asked her if she could help me out with the bills but she said she would only give me a 500$ discount on a second puppy. I dont know what exactly i would do with another puppy... but anyways i really have gotten no help as far as that goes. so two weeks ago we brought her in for a check up and we found out that she had coccidia as well. great! she has also lost weight, she got down to two lbs. so we treated her for that and that is cleared up but she still has giardia. we started on a second treatment last week for the giardia and it hasnt helped. today we moved back to the origional meds but just the correct amount. I gave her a dose today and she hasnt thrown up so thats good, but she pooped black poop... so thats got me really concerned. She was weighed again today and shes back up to 2.2lbs so yay! i think thats a good sign.

I was reading a bit on the thread about max the puppy with potential ls or neuological problems. its hard to know that you bought a sick puppy and yet the breeder will not help. I bought alice sick yet i had no idea. now i'm doing everything i can to help her be well. i havent had her that long but shes probally been to the vet about 15 times for tests and things. I hope max gets well.

Aww, I'm so sorry you are having to go through this with Alice. I have a Yorkie, named Booboo, and he had coccidia and giardia when I got him too. He had a really hard time with it too, but now he is almost 10 years old and has been healthy as a horse since then. So hopefully, this will pass with Alice also and she will be healthy from now on. It's good she's got such a good mommy to take care of her. Welcome to YT!!:welcome4:

Oh I'm so sorry. That is horrible!!! Did the breeder give you a health guarantee?

she told me that if i needed any meds to ask her and that she can get them from somewhere. but she didnt give me a health garantee persay, i dont think... i should of known something was fishy though. befor i got to her house she was telling me that some of her dogs got poop on themselves and needed to be bathed. also one of the other girls i was looking at had diharea while we were playing with her. i dont know though, i didnt think anything of it at the time. it just kind of sucks that i paid 1200$ for a sick puppy. but she is the cutest little ewok ever! haha she has white on her chin and chest. also on her back toes. shes super spunky and a quick learner. i wish i could start potty training her outside but she need to get all of her shots done over. :[ because she has been sick we couldnt give her her 3rd set of shots on time. chucks!

I am sure Alice will be better soon! I am sorry that you have been through all that you have and also that she has; but sounds like you are on the right track!

Oh gosh I am so sorry you and Alice are going through all this! I have been hearing so many cases of sick puppies being bought from breeders lately. It's so sad they do not stand behind the health of their babies. I really hope she gets better really soon.

Sounds like you are on the right track and I hope your little one gets 100% better. Not sure I'd go for that discounted second puppy though . . . .

The fact that this breeder whoever she is didn't provide you with a guarantee speaks volumes. But, what this breeder doesn't know is that there are California Lemon Laws and she is responsible for your baby's vet bills.

I know that when people are looking for a new pup they are in a hurry and fall in love with that cute little face, BYBers are depending on this.

How old is your little girl?

she was born late april. so 3 months, going on 4. she told me that if I had any problems to tell her and she would get me meds.... i guess some other people on some fourms have been bashing her. she really seemed like a nice lady but i dont want to get meds from her. she is not a vet and I dont know her well at all. i know her intentions were good but the fact is i've spent over 2000$ on this puppy and i've had her for almost 4 weeks. ugh. oh well.


thanks everyone! i cant wait to post more pictures of her. she is so silly, we have gotten a few videos of her hyper active ness. hahaha when she plays with her daddy she runs around with her nub tail between her legs and her ears back. she runs in circles all around the room. if we put her on the bed so runs after him off the bed. of course he catches her and puts her back on the bed. its soo funny! it reminds me of a little kid jumping into a pool into thair parents arms. cute. lol.

Yes, breeders are nice when they are wanting to sell you something. Her intentions of obtaining meds for you is something she shouldn't be doing, that is against the law too. I don't know who the breeder is, but she is one of not so good ethics. What you described as where your pup came from...does not sound like the dogs are kept sanitary.

yeah, i think that all the pups were having a sickness like the giardia that alice has. i just didnt know and this is my first time buying a puppy on my own. ive asked her to at least help me by giving me something to help with the medicial bills but she wont. i dont really know what to....

Here's what you do. Via the web, go to the California Pet Lemon Laws, send her a copy via e-mail. This should jar her awake, tell her you will report her to the better business bureau, rip off report her. You have legal rights and the California law is on your side.

IMO, the vet should not have charged you for his mistake. I feel the vet made a bad situation worse. Well, I hope your baby gets better soon, and welcome to yorkie talk.

Sounds like you were taken twice - once by the breeder and again by the initial vet that prescribed the incorrect amount of medication. I would definitely try to recoup the money that you were charged for the subsequent emergency treatment after the first vet dosed the medications wrong. Report that first vet to the Better Business Bureau, or at least try to talk with him/her and see what they can do.

As for the giardia, I've never had a dog with it, but I had it once. And it was horrible. I think dogs are the same as humans in that it can take a few rounds of strong antibiotics to get it out of your system. I was on three rounds of antibiotics before I was better :-/

princes mom - i agree. she was sick when i got her and it got worse with the meds being made wrong. thus costing me a whole lot to save her. it suck because the vet didnt really do anything wrong. they put in a percription to be made so that the compound of the meds would be weak enough for her weight. but the compond place made it wrong and it was too strong for her. thats what made her throw up. so it is this third party compounding place that made the big mistake.

so basically I cant really ask the breeder to pay for all the vet bills becuase i was ok with paying for meds in the first place. it only cost me like 40$ for meds. but becuase of the other thing which almost took her life, now i'm out 800$ for somthing that me or the breeder had no control over. so thats why after my last email to her i kind of droped the subject. yes, she sold me a sick puppy. yes i was doing everything to make her better by doctors orders. but with all of the events i don't really know whos to blame because one thing caused the next.

mardelin- i will deffinatly concider this but i'm really torn about whos at fault and if i should just pay because she is in my care and under my roof and at the end of the day, my responsibility.

vinnie doggy- I have been sooo afraid that my boyfriend and I will get giardia. befor we found out she was sick we were letting her lick our face and mouth and whatever. like it wasnt a problem. but the vet said that we could get sick from her so we went into panic mode. haha we havent felt any symptoms but i think my conciousness of it is making me feel sick. i'm glad you dont have it anymore becuase as i'm comming to find out, giardia seems terrible to have and hard to get rid of.

As a breeder, bottom line....the breeder is at fault. A sick puppy should never have left her house. She is responsible. Because Coccidia doesn't manifest it's ugly head until a pup is put into a stressful situation...leaving it's mom, litter mates and the home it has grown up in. I have it in my contract that even though my pups have been vet checked, fecal examed, etc. I'm responsible for such bills, that is up until 7 days of purchase. Knock on wood I've never had a pup with any of these conditions leave my house. The giardia, would/should have been caught and treated by a reputable breeder.

Other than having her vet checked as all contracts ask for, and which the puppy buyer is responsible for. Everything else is the breeder's responsiblity. You pup wouldn't have had to be treated for anything else had the breeder been reputable/responsible.

Think of it another way, if you don't take the steps, this woman will continue operating in the same manner. Some other unsuspecting family will come along and suffer the consequences.

Your Giardia fear is not without warrant, but difficult to get. I would see your Dr and ask for a prescription of Flagyl as a safe guard.

You are too nice, at that is wonderful, but right is right. Much more should be done to stamp out BYBer's. Not only for the protection of the consumer but, most of all for the protection of these wonderful little creatures. Not taking care of such things is a form of animal abuse.

I just read back on my last email from her and she stated that she has a 1 year health guarantee for fatal congentital defects but no guarantee for paracite problems. she said that she saw no sign of the pup being sick. she also has a partner that breeds and i guess the one i got was from her partner and not her. ugh. she told me that she started treating her brother who was caged with her for the giardia i guess... but she didnt untill after i told her that alice had it. i kind of think she really didnt know this dog was sick because she got it from her partner. but if they are a team then i would think they would have communication between each other about the dogs that they are trying to sell.

so who should i contact? should i show her the lemon law thing?

I also have another question about puppy shots. so she had a parvo shot the begining of june, then another parvo shot, distemper and two others the end of june. then she got another distemper shot last week but no others. the vet says that because she is still sick we cant give her her 3rd set of shots and that we will have to start all over again because too much time will pass. is this true? will the two parvo and distemper shots not work after some time? will she really have to get all the shots over again? i really dont know anything about this.

If it's her signature on the contract she is responsible, she sold you the dog.

However, didn't you find out about your girl's problem on her first week home and on her first vet checkup? Geez I hate how these breeders try to get out of owning up to their responsibilities.
How old is your girl?

yeah i think it was like 2 or 3 days in i took her to the vet and they said she had giardia. she was born 4/24/10. so 3 months old?

Here's the vaccination schedule

First shot between 8 & 9 weeks
Second at 12 weeks
Third and final at 16 weeks.

At what age was she given her first shot.

6 weeks (6/8) she was given parvo
8 weeks (6/22) she was given distemper, adenovirus 2, parafluenza and parvo
then i think a week and a half ago she was given another distemper shot. thats all she has gotten.

She had her shots too young. Giving them that young suppressed mother's immunities, they'll have to be started again.

Go to the YT library and read Dr Dodd's Vaccination Protocol.

okie dokie. yeah i didnt give her the shots. thats just how she came. its been a while since she had them so the vet told me we would have to start over again. oh well i guess. :P

so i'm sure some of you are wondering who the breeder was that I got alice from. I have written a review and put it under the breeder review section. anyone who is interested feel free to take a look. anyways, alice is doing alright. she has been very sleepy lately which seems kind of weird. I will keep everyone posted after thursday when we go to the vet again. :]

UPDATE!

so even though i havent been to the vet yet, i really think that the giardia is gone.... or at least getting there. she had her first solid poop today since i've had her! whoo! haha i know this is a silly post, but i just got excited and optimistic. :]
