Neck Pain... Hi everyone, recently my little girl will let out a cry if you make a sudden move and/or scare her. So I started feeling on her and she doesn't make a noise, then I turned her head left and right and she lets out a cry, something hurts her. Do you guys know what could be wrong with her? She does play with my other two yorkies. Thanks! |
Where in the neck? Around the throat area? Or the back of the neck? Or can you tell? She was possibly injured while playing. I would take her in and have her checked or x-rayed. |

this happened to my friends malt and it started at groomers but it is a condition that runs in yorkies and maltese how old is your little one? |

This was my first thought. Hopefully it's not the problem, but this pup needs to be seen by a vet immediately. |
AAI is congenital in Yorkies, unfortunately. Bleu Boy and a few other YT Yorkies have battled this condition: Roo Bear Yorkies & Biewers- home for Biewer Yorkshire a la Pom Pon and Yorkshire Terriers - atlantoaxialinstability |

What is AAI??? Edited: okay I see we were posting at the same time, I'll read about AAI.. |
here is vickie's home page contact her http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/member.php?u=26599 where in northern cali are you - are you near ucdavis? as we have another owner on here that had a good neurologist she just went to in that area we can refer you - ucdavis will charge the same as private practice is what i find :( I called them on this other dog so she ended up going to private practice |

She's about 4 years old, she doesn't really do much I don't know how it could be AAI. She plays some with the other two but not rough and the rest of the time she just lays around... I have a camera in yorkies area and she is never rough housing with them, just plays a little then goes about her bussiness. |

here are some videos on youtube |

do you take her to a groomer as they use those noose things and if she gets blood work at vet and gets stressed and twists neck wrong etc anything can trigger this so think back before this started did anything occur like grooming or vet visit |

do not move her neck and keep her real still until you get to vet - do not let her jump on and off stuff |

It could be a bite and i hope so but my gut is no and i would not mess with this one as this one needs to be addressed asap as the sooner you get on neurological things the better as more time can cause more damage. glad she is a mellow one which is rare in a yorkie lolll |
|
All the stories are of yorkies under a year old, is it common in older dogs? My girl is almost 4 years old. I guess the vet will let me know tomorrow. |

in the link i sent you it states this Causes Breeds at risk for congenital atlantoaxial instability include all toy breeds, especially Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, Pekingese, toy poodles, and Yorkshire terriers. These dogs usually show signs at less than one year of age, and symptoms can occur after very mild trauma, such as jumping off furniture, which would be considered normal activity. Any dog, young or old and of any breed, is at risk for atlantoaxial instability after a traumatic event, such as being hit by a car or being an unrestrained passenger in a car accident. they can do xrays but make sure to get digital if you can so they can put on a cd to go to neuro or orthopedic |
read through this thread http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...need-help.html chiari is another neck issue so check this all out - do not want to scare you just want you to be prepared for worse but we are hoping for best |

I took her in this a.m. and the vet moved her neck from side to side and not one cry came out. She felt her neck and said there's nothing to be concerned about that she probably hurt herself. She gave me some pain meds. I don't want to sound rude but its not always good to jump to major conclusions and get people scared the way you did. I know you were trying to help but you basically gave me no other option except she was an AAI dog. |

I am not scared when people try to help me i am thankful that they gave me info to help me with my dog and to gather that info then go to the vet or specialist to get a diagnosis - no one on here is a vet we are just pet owners trying to help when people have a sick dog which i think is a good thing. It is not to scare or torment people but to educate them on the possibilities. Did your vet do xrays? Why did she give pain meds if there was no pain as i would not do pain meds if my dog was not in pain? sorry but sadly vets make mistakes too it has happen with mine many of time. You said your dog does not rough house etc so how would she hurt her neck? Again I am hoping the best for your baby but knowledge is not a bed thing and being prepared for the worst and hoping for best is always the best way to approach things as then you are a prepared pet owner |
I agree. Also agree if no pain, then why the meds :quizzi: Think I'd of insisted on at least x-ray. Better safe than sorry. Please keep us posted. |
