| Anal Gland Discharge Color This thread is going to be gross, so you may want to stop here. When emptying anal glands, what colors does everyone get? I rarely do this (prefer not to start if not necessary), but long story short, it was obvious that something wasn't right today. All wet around anus, but not pee. (REALLY GROSS) Tiny chunks of dark something or other...maybe poop, but I doubt it. Very dark (I guess brown) discharge when emptying and lots of it. Hers is normally a lighter brown/yellow with darker specs. This is all quite dark. Not red.... Maybe I am just forgetting what it usually looks like. Anyone ever see it very dark?

| The vet has always done mine, but the color is usually a lighter brown like you described. I don't know what it means when it's darker. Sorry, I'm no help.

| I don't know either... but I am curious to know how often and how do I empty them if I choose to do it instead waiting for the vet or groomer.

| If they don't show any signs of being full, then you probably don't need to. There are explanations online about how to do it, but it's best to have a vet show you to avoid complications. thanks guys (well gals). I'm not comfortable with what's going on, so her vet has been informed.

| That's probably a really good idea to have the vet check. We had an elderly Shih Tsu that had an anal gland infection. It took numerous rounds of antibiotics to clear up. She was blind and deaf and had begun biting really bad. We thought it was because of her sight and hearing but when we finally got the anal gland infection cleared up she quit biting. I felt really bad - it must have really been hurting her. |

It just kinda tricked me because I that while each dog would have their own "color", the color would stay the same through the dog's life. Well actually I never really thought about it, but that would make sense to me. Anyway, her vet said pretty much the same thing. I'm just watching for red discharge and pus now.

Depends on who you ask and you don't want to start something that you won't be able to stop later, but generally yes.

If you'd have burst the glands, you'd have known by now. But, if you're concerned of possible infection (which it can happen), have your vet prescribe Panalog (great antibiotic and I use it for everything)......it comes with a very narrow applicator that you can insert, the effect is almost immediate.
