No, we did SNAP cPL only.
She just had bloodwork two weeks ago and I didn't want to repeat it.

Vet looked at two pics and says they are pink. I say they are, but they are also lighter than normal. She is okay and I'm sure she will be fine, but I would like to see them get a bit darker personally.

Here is a pic.
She wasn't happy with me.
They are definitely pink, but just not as dark as we are used to seeing.
But she has been cleared by her vet, so we are just watching to make sure they don't get any lighter.
It is likely a difference that only an owner would be able to see anyway...

The concern at the moment is anemia (if they don't come back to normal soon).

No fluids could lead to dehydration and that is tested easily by touching the gums to see if they are wet. I don't know that lowered blood sugar shows by the color of the gums. I have never heard of that...the only way I know to check for hypoglycemia is the level of their awareness and also look for weakness.

I see a lot of posts on YT about the color of gums being used as a measurement for dehydration and that is not a way to measure for that.

I posted this not long ago....it is a good site with lots of info about checking gums:

White gums can (possibly) mean that their sugar is low. Because she hadn't eaten in so long, that was our concern. White gums could also mean anemia. Sticky or dry gums, yes, dehydration (which she has had on and off yesterday and today).

What a weekend.

She has been dehydrated all weekend and your vet does not think she should be on fluids?

Honestly, I am stunned.

Ellie May 02-21-2010 02:58 PM

That was probably worded wrong.
She was dehydrated yesterday morning, so the vet wanted her to be seen as soon as possible. She was given fluids and sent home. She was a bit dehydrated this morning, I think, but she was allowed to have water, so now she is fine. Vet wouldn't even think of letting her stay dehydrated...

I am still thinking about you guys and hope you can get her well soon. You have Roxy's diet already, but I wonder if something more along those lines would help her? To me it seems pretty low in fat.

And I did start them on the VSL#3 and it works very well. I am on vaca but once I get back (next weekend) I can send you a few packets if you want to try it?

yorkiepuppie 02-22-2010 06:33 AM

i hope ellie may is feeling better today. big hugs to you both!

shodanusmc 02-22-2010 08:34 AM

Iams Low Residue is great food to prevent that.

Hi Crystal, How is Ellie feeling today?

Ellie May 02-22-2010 09:28 AM

Nicole, isn't that a probiotic?
We had tried a different one made for animals awhile back and I don't think it did a thing. So I asked her nutritionist about probiotics and she isn't impressed. IN fact, she had gotten some complaints of GI upset while not seing benefits at that time. So I'm just not sure. :( It just makes me so nervous to try things when GI upset for her caused by a supplement could just irritate so much in there. :( Ya know?

Thanks for the Iams suggestions. Ellie has allergies which those types of diets make worse for her. They also tend to make her SIBO/IBD issues worse.

Lissette, she is doing very well today. Like nothing ever happened. :)

Thanks everybody.

manolos mom 02-22-2010 09:40 AM

Crystal, have you ever tried Mirtazapine for nausea and loss of appetite? Holy crapola, Linda told me about it and wow, this is how and why Lola gained her appetite. I give her one fourth tab a day and she eats like a little pig. She was very very sick and did not want to eat or drink and became amemic and anorexic. Please ask your vet about it. Its a miracle drug. Better than anything else including CERENIA which really never helped Lola much.

that is odd as most vets now are on board with probiotics - i only use them with dd but dex does not get them and he has ibd and pancreatitis issues but i do not want to mess with what works and the food is working so that is all he gets - the probiotics have helped dd a ton with her allergies and the one time i took her off she got clostridium and a staph infection - she has been back on them since 1/4 of this year but for two years i had no issues and last year was a nightmare :( when i had her off them but with elle not sure that is tough as i know that fear of trying anything with dex i am scared to death as once that vomitting starts it is hours before he stops :(

Thank God she was only on the Cerenia to control nausea after this pancreatitis episode. She always has an appetite...as in, we don't know where she puts it all and we don't understand why her metabolism is as fast as it is. She had problems with soft stool until we put her on this diet. If we have to change her diet again, I wonder if it would help with that though.

We had tried Proviable by Nutramax. I don't think there was any difference. We tried it at a time when her pancreas was doing okay and I wasn't worried about a flare up. Now I don't know about introducing more supplements. :( I have heard nothing but good things about VSL#3 though. I just remember her nutritionist telling me that sometimes they seem to cause GI upset and if they can do that, then I guess they have the potential to irritate things in there. And irritation with a dog prone to pancreatitis isn't fun. :(

Oh Crystal :D....on the bright side, this picture is a classic. And THOSE TEETH....could they be any whiter??? Wow.

I hope things get better. I can't offer any advice here, but want to send some more hugs and support :).

i think she is referring to priobiotics that are not hypoallergenic or that have lactose in them like yogurt etc as my dd cannot take yogurt she can only do non-dairy probiotics and why i like the dds plus so much it is acidopholus, biffidus and fos that is it and that stuff works wonders as it is very simple ingredients no enzymes, nothing and why i like it so much. Many dogs are lactose intolerant and cannot tolerate things like yogurt and why goat yogurt is better for them but that made dd sick too :( A nutritionist i consult told me about that and coconut oil and both worked great for dd - i have told alot of people about the dds plus and have heard it worked for theirs as well but i know that concern as i have it with dexter as too afraid to try anything with that boy as any time he gets the slightest thing he starts a massive vomiting cycle and i become a nervous wreck :(

hey wild but today a client called me told me he almost died 3 times this year on operating table - he told me he had 95% of his pancreas removed and he said the pancreas and the liver rejuvenate themselves which i thought only the liver did and he said no the pancreas too and liver and pancreas are the only organs that do this as his pancreas is growing back now. Pretty wild but it made me feel good as i know the pancreas is repairable if damaged. He is now a diabetic but as the pancreas grows he said he has to take less and less insulin. Funny how people come in our lives at the right time as I thought of elle and dex so wanted to pass this one to you as well :) as i always worry about damage done with the pancreatic attack- oh and it was caused by he had gall bladder removed and the duct was infected so it damaged his pancreas and he was very sick

Hmmm, had no idea that the pancreas did that.

Ellie's nutritionist was referring to all probiotics, I think. She wasn't really making a statement on whether they were okay or not, just relaying what she has seen from them.

Nicole, I think I have Roxy's diet somewhere. Wasn't it cottage cheese? Grains?

ladyjane 02-22-2010 03:36 PM

I would look that one up. I don't think the pancreas regenerates in humans. I could be wrong...but, I think only the liver does that.
I am going to google this later....too busy right now.

ok thanks as i was shocked too but he had 95% removed and it is growing back was quite shocked myself

Oh, so sorry to read this. I hope Ellie gets to feeling better real soon.

dwerten 02-22-2010 03:45 PM

here is info i just found wild - maybe it is just in surgical situations - he said they put his pancreas in mesh as it was like sewing up toothpaste and as it grows less and less insulin is needed - he was off work 6 months - he was a mess - he had the surgery at cedar sinai-http://www.cedars-sinai.edu/ pretty wild

I guess, if he said so....but that link says this:

Most of these biomolecules have been investigated in animal studies, yet they have not reached the stage of clinical trials. Further extensive studies must be carried out before they can be safely extrapolated to humans.

I am going to read some more later....I really only skimmed that article and need to see more.

I can send it again, but it won't be until Sunday when I get home. I use Friendship 1% No Sodium brand cottage cheese. For carbs I use egg noodles and those Sweet Potato curls as a topper. And the VSL#3 they come in little packets. For both TJ and Roxy I am using 1/20 th of the packet daily. I must say, it has really helped TJs IBD issues. When I get home I have order more. They only ship M-W so once I get a new box, I can mail you a packet to try out (if you'd like)
