Guys, I am sooooooo upset that I still know nothing about Livi! I am going to call after trying to feed the babies.

For anyone thinking of breeding....I did the research, I put the time in reading/learning/asking questions, many thoughts, prayers. I did a ton to prepare and this is still happening....PLEASE DO NO BREED UNLESS YOU ARE 110% READY FOR ALL THAT I AM NOW FACING!!!!!!!

Yes she did. She did not rush into it.

Tammy I just now saw your post on Fb and came to YT to see what is going one.

Have not finished reading yet.

So sorry that you are having problems.

Livi had some calcium issues, yes, but that was because she wasn't eating well for me yesterday and had nonstop diarhhea...but was still being a wonderful mommy and nursing her babies constantly. Thus, causing the calcium problems. Here's where the problem began........a retained placenta. I feel sick...I feel guilty...I feel just awful right now! When Livi had her first baby, things were crazy for my husband and I because this our first delivery. We instantly started working with the puppy. I turned and saw the placenta and thought that it seemed small, but didn't think about it again until later. Once she had the other two puppies, I know for a fact that those two came out because I had to help with that. At the time, I even asked my husband why the first placenta was so incredibly small compared to the last two. This is because she had the majority of it inside of her....the vet was able to see this with an ultrasound. She is now on IV meds. and fluids because she was dehydrated...they are also dealing with the calcium problems. They are going to call me again this afternoon to keep me updated but they are sending her home tonight and want to see her again in the morning.

So, that's what I know.

I will be back on later to let you know whatelse I find out. Thanks again for all of your kind words and for thinking and praying for my precious Livi.

I take my moms in for a shot to clean her out, when I take the puppies in to get tails docked. I meant to ask you if you had done that, then forgot.

TammyJM 01-29-2010 03:49 PM

Geoff took Cadbury to the vet...that's where he's at right now. This started a few hours after me giving Livi her medicine. He started looking limp and so I weighed him and he has lost weight and is not latching on....very weak. His tummy is also having problems. When Geoff was speaking with the vet over the phone (THE GOOD VET!!)...she told him that the prescription medicine that was given to Livi should never have been!!! Apparently, the other vet had not been giving her this med while she was with them the past two days, but sent me home with the pills to give to her. I am the one that gave Livi that pill earlier and these problems with the puppies' tummies and weakness started.

I don't know anything yet...Geoff did call and tell me that he is there and that he will let me know more when he can. Cadbury isour biggest one...these puppies were INCREDIBLY healthy!!! That medicine should have NEVER been prescribed to Livi and I should have research the med before giving it her.

I just hope that Cinnamon and Cupcake remain strong because I made the decision to send Geoff with only Cadbury and now I am second-guessing that decision....

Tammy I am so sorry that you are having all this stress. I hope the puppy does OK. Are the others nursing OK now. I don't know about the meds, but would think they would have told you that it is not OK to let the puppies nurse. Is it possible that he aspirated some milk and has pneumonia?

Keeping you in my prayers.

Mom2TwoYorkies 01-29-2010 03:56 PM

Sorry to hear all your troubles! Praying for Cadbury that he gets well and continuing good thoughts for you, Livi, Cinnamon and Cupcake . . .please let us know as soon as you find out . . .

TammyJM 01-29-2010 06:33 PM

Geoff is home with Cadbury. The vet said that he was a little dehydrated. She gave him sub-q fluids and glucose (I guess a shot...I don't know). She also did a reflex test and said he looked good. When he came home, I really didn't see a puppy that was any stronger than when he left...other than eating...which is great because he was too weak to do this before going to the vet. I wish that I had sent Cupcake as well because she now acts very weak. She feels that this all started with the medication that was given to Livi (that shouldn't have been prescribed in the first place) The problem is, the puppies are having side effects from the pill...causing bloated gassy tummies. The puppies do not have the energy to latch. However, Cadbury is doing better with eating....Cupcake is having such a tough time. So far, Cinnamon seems fine. I am going to keep trying to get Cupcake to latch onto the bottle tonight. Oh,that's another thing....Livi isn't suppose to nurse for 36 hours...just to give the pill time to get out of her system. The vet said that this is probably overkill on the time-frame, but she wants to be safe. Any advice on Livi's milk since she can't nurse....are we going to lose it now? Oh, and guess what....not only should they never have given Livi that medication, but the vet tonight said that the dosage was also high (it was 250mg for the day....so Livi's pill this morning was 125). *sigh*

Anyone want to place a bet on whether or not I will ever breed again?

YorkieRealtor 01-29-2010 06:40 PM

Tammy - where do you live? I think that tube feeding would really help you and I wonder if we could find someone nearby to teach you. Just let me know where you are.

Tammy,

I've had my repro vet prescribe flagyl on a nursing mom that has had dirreah, but never that high of dosage. No adverse affects on the pups. Was Livi having diarreah? I would have thought they'd prescribed antibiotics (you didn't mention if the did). When my girl went down after the pups were a week old, and finally diagnosed an infection, they put her on heavy antibiotics to combat it. They were administered via IV for about 4 days and then by mouth for a month. This finally got her uterus to empty the poisons and reduce to normal size. At that point we began hand raising the pups because of the antibiotics. Which could have caused fadding puppy syndrome, such as you're experiencing now. A suggestion, in the breeder section there is fadding puppy recipe. And you might want to take the other 2 puppies in for Lactose Ringer (sub-Q).

If you have your girl spayed within the next few days, make sure they do a coagulation test....just to make sure her blood is coagulating properly.....just based on what happened with my girl. They did this test, when I requested them to spay her on day 4 of her illness....if they had gone ahead with the surgery without the test, she'd have bleed to death on the table.

Mary, I am going to write out what you told me/asked me and I am going to run it all by the vet tomorrow. We will take the other two babies in the morning like you suggested. I will look for the recipe that you were talking about.

I am heartbroken, confused, scared, depressed, tired, overwhelmed.....

Thank you again!

Tammy,

With my girl it wasn't a retained placenta. What happened to her was a ripped horn.....Something they could not see in the ultra-sound. Your girl could have uterine problems. Somethings can't be seen with the ultra-sound/or sonogram. My girl's ripped horn was visible until they opened her up for her spay. Even with waiting for a month, my repro vet told me that he prepared for the worse, making sure he cauterized as he went.

As Lisa said above, you might want to learn how to tube feed. I usually don't like to do it unless circumstances occur such as yours. You might want to have your vet teach you how to Sub-Q....

Tammy,

You're feeling overwhelmed....it's something we all go through with a difficult whelp......You're tired, no sleep, worried. It's something I don't want to wish on anyone.....I know that after what happened to my girl....I was ready to spay/nueter everything and quit. What really amazed me is that after all of it my husband and I didn't end up in divorce court.....we were so exhausted, making sure the pups were being fed around the clock and taking care of mom after she came back home.....we were snapping at each other....oh and then we had the rest of the yorkie crew to take care of too.

kpstoybox 01-29-2010 10:39 PM

Tammy,
Tried to send you a PM...and it wouldn't go through.

You have my number. PLEASE do not hesitate to call if you think I could help. I have raised two litters successfully (from birth and 8 days of age).

I will keep you and your little one's in my prayers.

TammyJM 01-30-2010 01:12 AM

Mary~

You are so right about being overwhelmed. The guilt alone.....well, I am questioning myself when I look at Livi and those precious babies. I would give ANYTHING to make this all better and we are trying....soooo hard!!! Livi's first litter was a nightmare as well and it ended with losing all but one baby. I know that it was because those babies were preemies, but I was also responsible for everything with them. This being Livi's second litter, we are obviously new to it all, but yet somehow we find ourselves once again thrown into the worst case scenario category. :( I cannot even begin to tell you how loving my husband and I are with our fur kids and to see this happen....it's tough to comprehend the reason behind it. The retained placenta, yes, I can take responsibility but not what medication was prescribed to Livi. Even though I am blaming myself because ultimately, I am the one that put that pill in her mouth....I can't stop crying as I think about it!

Karen~

Sorry about my PM box being full. I meant to clear it out, but haven't gotten to it. I am not going to delete any right now....I am headed to bed. You have my email...will you send me your number again. I know I have it written down, but my mind is so fuzzy that I cannot think of where I put many things right now. Thanks K!

Geoff and I just fed Livi and the puppies so I am going to try to get some rest now....my 4 and 6 year olds will be up in about 3 hours, asking for breakfast. Thanks again to everyone for the support...we definitely need it!!!

TammyJM 01-30-2010 01:24 AM

Karen~

I just reread what I wrote and think it sounded short...I'm sorry....that's not how it was intended. I didn't realize that it was sounding like that until I just reread it.

Going to bed before Emma and Landon are up asking, "Why are you so tired AGAIN, Mommy?" This has been the question from them all week now. ;) Or they also ask, "Are you still tired, Mommy because you're eyes aren't opening big like they are suppose to." ;) It's called swollen, tear stained, tired eyes...but to them, it's just "mommy looking weird"...their exact words.

Tammy

Tammy You have done everything to take care of Livi & the babies, don't be so hard on yourself most of us follow Dr. orders cause they are suppose to know whats best.

I have gave this same med. to my girl with good results. I think these babies are like us what works for one don't always work for another. most people i know take tylenol, asprin works better for me i hope you are resting now. hugs to all of you

JeanieK 01-30-2010 05:45 AM

Tammy I hope today finds the puppies strong and eating well. May the Lord give you the strength you need to get through this.

Sweetlips6 01-30-2010 05:56 AM

Tammy,
You and your babies were the first thing I thought about this morning.
I am so hoping things look better for you today, and so wishing someone was close enough to help you out.

Wylie's Mom 01-30-2010 06:07 AM

Tam, this is the first thing I looked for this morning when I got up. I just want you to know that Livi, the babies, you and your family are all in my thoughts. Everyone is pulling for all of you.

Sending lots of hugs and love :).

YorkieRealtor 01-30-2010 06:11 AM

Don't be so hard on yourself! You have had no sleep and you are doing all of this for the first time. The tube feeding will help you get some sleep and it is not hard to do. You do need someone experienced to show you how to do it. If the mother is not going to be able to nurse the puppies, tube feeding them will really help you and it will ensure that they get enough to eat. Let me see if I can find someone near Springfield who could help you.

sending good thoughts and prayers your way!!!!!!!!!!

ryorkies 01-30-2010 06:22 AM

Tammy, I have not been online here at YT very much but had heard the news and just had to come and support you with prayers and optimistic thoughts.
I have been in your shoes and this is the part of breeding that most non-breeders know nothing about. The pain and anguish, the fear and sleepless nights. I remember being on the phone with my wonderful friends crying my eyes out and praying for miracles.
Please know that each and every breeder here is praying for you and supporting you in any way that we possibly can. We have all been in this situation and can feel your heartbreak.
Tammy, if there is anything at all that I can do, please do not hesitate to call on me. I may not be able to be there physically to help, but my heart is supporting you 100%.

Our Thoughts and Prayers are with you all ...... :heart to

Sukoshis Gma 01-30-2010 06:45 AM

Tammy, I saw your post on FB so came here to see what is happening. I can not help you with any advice but wanted to tell you that I am thinking of you and sending up prayers for you, Livi, and the babies. Please know that I support you completely and I know that you can and will get through this. I hope you are able to get some much needed rest today and that all the furbabies will start to improve as the day goes on. I am so sorry you have had to go through this and am sending you big (((HUGS))) my friend.

I now see there is a support thread going, should have posted this there, I'm sorry.

I'm still here Tammy with moral support and prayers. :hands:
We all know the strength behind YT prayers and you, Livi, and her pups have so many prayers coming your way.

Tammy,

I prepare for every litter to the fullest. Make sure I have every concievable med on hand. Plasma, Lactose ringers, you name it I have it ready......but, nothing prepared me for the moment my girl started going down. I had taken all the necessary precautions. POP shot given after the whelp, vet checked, etc.....

When you get these pups eating properly.....you've only got another week or so until they can lap that goat's milk on their own. My girl's pups began losing weight for a couple of days, until I switched them to goat's milk, after my repro vet screamed at me to get them off of Just Born.

TammyJM 01-30-2010 07:20 AM

Thanks again!! We have decided to take Cinnamon to the vet this morning because she is now very weak and not able to suckle. We also decided that we are going to go ahead and take all three puppies and Livi along. I am not playing around with any of this and the fact that the vet is closed tomorrow make me nervous. So, off to the vet we all go.

My story, along with other breeders that have gone through their own experiences, these all should be stickied in the breeder's section so every single time someone says that we make money from breeding, we can just post the link for them to read!

Wish us luck at the vet....I am hoping for some positive uplifting words of advice!

oh girl sending LOTS of prayers your way for some good advise!!
I am so sorry you are going thru all this, like Mary said you name it I have it home, but nothing prepares you for something like this.
Money, I laugh when people ask me how much money I make with each litter. they have NO idea even when a whelping and rearing goes textbook, my expenses outweigh my gains.
I will keep checking for updates, if you need anything let me know.
hugs,
