Livi had some calcium issues, yes, but that was because she wasn't eating well for me yesterday and had nonstop diarhhea...but was still being a wonderful mommy and nursing her babies constantly. Thus, causing the calcium problems. Here's where the problem began........a retained placenta. I feel sick...I feel guilty...I feel just awful right now! When Livi had her first baby, things were crazy for my husband and I because this our first delivery. We instantly started working with the puppy. I turned and saw the placenta and thought that it seemed small, but didn't think about it again until later. Once she had the other two puppies, I know for a fact that those two came out because I had to help with that. At the time, I even asked my husband why the first placenta was so incredibly small compared to the last two. This is because she had the majority of it inside of her....the vet was able to see this with an ultrasound. She is now on IV meds. and fluids because she was dehydrated...they are also dealing with the calcium problems. They are going to call me again this afternoon to keep me updated but they are sending her home tonight and want to see her again in the morning.

So, that's what I know.

I will be back on later to let you know whatelse I find out. Thanks again for all of your kind words and for thinking and praying for my precious Livi.

I am so happy the news sounds so positive with Livi. Tammy please dont beat yourself up over something anyone could have missed. I am clueless about breeding but am sure that could have easily happened to someone who has been doing it for years. You and Geoff had a lot going on helping Livi bring those precious babies into the world. It you both hadn't done such a great job it could have easily been a different outcome for each of the puppies. Big hugs to you, smooches to momma Livi and the puppies.

Thank goodness you're such an attentive mommy! I'm sending lots of prayers that Livi gets better soon and that caring for the pups goes a little easier for you.

Next time, when in doubt.....Oxcytocin shot is in order.

I agree, but then you can run into a vet like mine who thinks an oxy shot is not always necessary, so the RED RABSBERRY Leaf TEA is another option, it works and is something you need to keep handy just in case you doc is like mine...I have a habit of giving my girls 1/2 a cup right after delivery to make sure EVERYTHING is out.
Don't punish yourself girl, you did everything that you thought it was needed and also you caught it on time, now you have to look into feeding the babies and helping LIVI get better.
hugs,

My thoughts exactly. Livi is in my thoughts  and prayers :hands:!

I went through the same thing with my Chattie, only her episode was 2 weeks PRIOR to delivering 3 healthy pups. With the aid of Cal-Sorb she was able to nurse the pups until she weaned them naturally between 6 and 8 weeks.

So glad they found the problem and Livi will be home tonight:hug:

Carmen,

I understand why some vets are against giving POP shots....and their reasons are very valid. In the hands of inexperienced breeders they can cause more harm than good and should in those cases be administered by a vet completing a thorough examination.

I just got home and wanted to check this thread.

I am glad she is getting the treatment she needs. She is in my prayers.

Breny 01-27-2010 10:20 AM

Tammy I have found using a premie nipple and bottle works the best for feeding pups. You can adjust the flow of the hole if needed. I have even used just a newborn nipple as well.

ARCHIE 01-27-2010 10:26 AM

I'm far from a breeder but I can understand how this can happen.
Between all the excitment, stress and exhustion who can think?
You did everything that you were suppose to do, your a great mommy.
I am so happy she's coming home later today.
Enjoy your new family and their mommy.

Hugs,

sending prayers for a speedy recovery...

TammyJM 01-27-2010 11:14 AM

Thanks again...to everyone!! I am dying to call the vet again, but she did say that they would call me sometime this afternoon....but boy is it tough to not call them every 5 minutes. I am one that my knees get to shaking when they take my fur kids from me and take them to the back where I can't see them so this is killing me! I miss seeing her little sweet face right now...I know, I know...she will be home later today (as long as things go well today), but I still miss her BADLY!!! I forgot to ask her earlier how they would handle the retained placenta now...oxy shot?? How long will that take? I wonder if she will be able to nurse her puppies or since she did have calcium problems (regardless of the trigger). I need to do what someone suggested...write down all of my questions because my head is hurtign so bad right now and my eyes are red and blurry.

I will update when I know more.

BonBon 01-27-2010 11:26 AM

Tammy, I'm so sorry Livi isn't feeling well. Thank goodness that you rushed her right in and that were able to find the problem. She's be home in your arms soon! Now, cry all you need to so that you'll be strong for her when she gets home. {hugs}

brendah 01-27-2010 11:28 AM

Tammy you are being a wonderful mommy to your Livi. We have our thoughts and prayers with you and your family. I don't have advice just support. Livi is a tough girl and you already know that:animal36 If you have to tube feed the puppies I am sure the vet will show you exactly how. Mine showed me and it was not too bad, just scarry the first few times.

Perrella 01-27-2010 11:57 AM

Bless your heart Tammy.....you are a WONDERFUL mommy!! Hang in there. Definately write down all your questions to discuss w/vet and write down the answers to, so you can reflect when needed. Still sending prayers for your momma & babies! 0X0X0X0X

This has all frazzled my nerves and brought back memories. I am praying for Livi and for YOU. I'll check back again later.

TammyJM 01-27-2010 02:10 PM

OK, guys....they did call me again...about an hour ago. She said that Livi is free to go whenever we get there...which has to be when my husband gets off work. She should be home in maybe an hour and a half. My husband also called them earlier this afternoon ()...yes, we were probably driving them crazy. They told him that he would be shocked at how great her spirits had been since starting meds. She also told him that she is up looking around...just acting great. :) They are sending her home with a catheder. and they want her back in the morning to check her and I *think* to remove the catheder. There are soooo many questions that I forgot to ask when she called me. In fact, I hate to do this but I am going to call them and ask. Makes me nervous to feel like I am bugging them, but my husband won't remember to ask when he picks her up.

Wish us luck for a good night!! Also, will you continue to keep us in your thoughts....the puppies still need it. :(

Thanks again!

jackson25 01-27-2010 02:12 PM

Tammy, that sounds GREAT! I bet Livi is ready to get home too!

YorkieMom6 01-27-2010 02:24 PM

Keeping Livi, the babies, and you in my thoughts and prayers.

Ann- I don't know...do you? I tried calling them, but the tech was not where she could speak. Hopefully, Geoff will ask.

Does anyone know why??

kjc 01-27-2010 02:46 PM

:D I'm going to guess an IV catheter...:D

Don't ever feel bad or embarassed to ask your vet questions.... You're paying them, which makes you the boss, and they work for you. If they make you feel bad or rushed... then that would be time to look for a new vet. Praying all goes well tonight... Get some rest!:D

Oh...duh! I even knew that because I have it written right here in front of me when they told me what all they had done. I am too tired!

Jumped to the end and am glad to see a positive update. I hope Livi continues to improve!

I thought the same thing as Ann...seems strange...I was thinking they were leaving (I am not medical so forgive me) the attachments in her leg for drips and liquids so if she goes down again they can immediately hook her up...Yorkies have such small veins it can sometimes be a problem...
