Keeping my fingers crossed that everything is OK with Miss Livi. :xfingers: |
I started trying to feed the puppies with an eye dropper...how much should I be giving them with the dropper? |

I know that you are already aware of this, but keep in mind that depending on what the vet decides, IF Livi is not able to feed the pups for a considerable amount of time, tube feeding would be a better option for the pups than using an eyedropper. It's an option in a pinch, but not ideal for more than a couple feedings. |

Guys, I am sooooooo upset that I still know nothing about Livi! I am going to call after trying to feed the babies. For anyone thinking of breeding....I did the research, I put the time in reading/learning/asking questions, many thoughts, prayers. I did a ton to prepare and this is still happening....PLEASE DO NO BREED UNLESS YOU ARE 110% READY FOR ALL THAT I AM NOW FACING!!!!!!! |
I am so sorry Tammy, Breeding is SO hard... I am sending Lots of prayers for you and specially for Livi... hugs, |
Try attaching the nipple to a syringe...... Start out with 1 or 2 cc every two hours...... A six ounce pup should be fed 45 cc daily 12 feedings per day (3.75 cc per feeding). Don't be surprised as they grow that they are taking more than 45 cc per feeding. |
Oh no I hate this! Hope Livi is ok and back with you and her babies very soon. Prayers going up. |
Prayers for Livi and the pups and you! Sometimes changing the position of how you hold the pup as you try to feed them... normal to try to hold them belly up so you can see if their taking it, if not flip hand over so tummy is down and offer some that way. Also keep pups and food warm, use a thermometer to get it about 104 degrees. Always test on your arm. I used to set up 3 syringes in hot water, and rotate cause they will cool down quickly. Above all be patient, it can take 5-6 tries to get them to eat from a syringe/nipple. |
My prayers for Livi and her pups |
Just now logged in and seeing this. I am praying for your sweet Livi that she will be ok. I am also sending prayers for you little puppys that they will latch on and start eating. Sending prayers to the vet to hurry up and find out what is wrong with poor little Livi and get her better, her babies and you need her. I can't imagine what you must be going through right now. |
:hands::hands::hands: OMG Tammy, sending prayers that Livi is fine (and her pups too). :hands::hands::hands: |
thanks everyone for your help. I am going to keep trying to feed them because they keep crying and it seems like I get a lot of on me or the blanket...because I can't stop shaking...and crying. I have heard NOTHING from the stupid vet! Sorry...just frustrated and angry with them. |
They have stopped crying and are sleeping (and very peacefully actually). I don't feel like two of them got quite enough, though. Do I wake them to feed some more? Also, I have diapered them...do I just do this after feeding them? My head is spinning rght now.. |
Oh Tammy, I'm sorry to hear about Livi. I hope she is OK. I have read that you can use cloth type cotton gauze and dip in the formula for the puppy to suck on. If Livi can't nurse and hand raising is too much for you, you might also check with the Vets to see if there are any breeders who might have nursing moms around you. Are you still in Missouri and close to Shirley that has Fantasy Yorkies ? You might check with her. Thinking or You, Livi and the babies and sending good thought your way. |

Check their tummies, see if they're nice and round. If they've stopped crying they got enough. The syringe helps you determine how much they're getting and lets you control the flow better, that way you won't aspirate. But, just let them eat until they drop off.....oh! Don't forget to burp them..... |
oh tammy I feel for you.... Call the vet they should teach you and your hubby how to tube feed the babies. is hard but you need to get enogh food in them, and tube feeding is the best way to do it. hugs, Carmen in nj |

That's the benefit of the syring/tubs vs droppers...you know exactly how much they are getting and you know that it is emptying into the stomach. S'why it's better for long term situations. |
Before their next feed if they haven't pottied, moisten a piece of gauze in warmish water and wipe their pp's and butts to stimulate them to pee and poo, you can also do their tummies to simulate their mom licking them. Before feed is best but you can also do it after if they appear bloated. Watch their tummies when you feed. Full is good, overfull is not so good. |
First of all, let me just say how ashamed I feel for calling my vet clinic stupid...just my own fears. They have been nothing but nice. I just heard from them and guys....this all has been MY fault!! Livi had some calcium issues, yes, but that was because she wasn't eating well for me yesterday and had nonstop diarhhea...but was still being a wonderful mommy and nursing her babies constantly. Thus, causing the calcium problems. Here's where the problem began........a retained placenta. I feel sick...I feel guilty...I feel just awful right now! When Livi had her first baby, things were crazy for my husband and I because this our first delivery. We instantly started working with the puppy. I turned and saw the placenta and thought that it seemed small, but didn't think about it again until later. Once she had the other two puppies, I know for a fact that those two came out because I had to help with that. At the time, I even asked my husband why the first placenta was so incredibly small compared to the last two. This is because she had the majority of it inside of her....the vet was able to see this with an ultrasound. She is now on IV meds. and fluids because she was dehydrated...they are also dealing with the calcium problems. They are going to call me again this afternoon to keep me updated but they are sending her home tonight and want to see her again in the morning. So, that's what I know. I will be back on later to let you know whatelse I find out. Thanks again for all of your kind words and for thinking and praying for my precious Livi. |
Tammy, I am so sorry that you are having to go through this. Praying for Livi! |
Hang in there. I cried through these post. I am praying for your pup. These gals on YT are really helping you a lot. |
Tammy - Please don't dwell on what happened - just what needs to be done. Continued thoughts and prayers for you, Livi and pups. |
All that matters is that you were alert and took her in. Other's have lost their moms because they weren't on the ball. Next time, when in doubt.....Oxcytocin shot is in order. |
Hey Tammy I've been reading whats going on and I've actually kept up with the thread of Livi's pups, which by the way they look AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL! I just think you shouldn't be so hard on yourself right now. Error made that i am sure you will never make again. Now its time to pamper Livi..shes just gorges i love her pics i hope she feels much better. *hugs for you and the furbutts* |
