| What do you think my yorkie's chances are of living? I have a 12-year yorkie and for the past 3-4 days, he's been having trouble breathing/coughing when getting excited, so I took him to a local vet; the doctor put him on antibiotics and had him taking Robitussin DM for a virus, but I wasn't seeing any improvement so I brought him back a couple days later. They took x-rays and said his lungs are pretty heavily filled with fluid and they need to do an ultrasound to see exactly what's going on. They think it could either be his heart in which they can't do anything for, or cancer, or maybe it's something completely different and can be fixed. This dog means the world to me and I want to do everything I can to save him .. does anyone have any opinions, or similar situations? Why can't his heart be fixed if that's the issue? I just don't understand why I didn't see any symtoms sooner; if his lungs are that filled with fluid, something would have had to be wrong sooner than just a few days?! |

| Our old Brandy went down hill fast.. could not stand to go potty.. we knew he was older.. he was a rescue.. so we took him to the vet and low and behold it was his heart and given mediacations for his heart plus for fluids he did well for over two more years and died at home in the night.. so if it is his heart I am sure there is some kind of hope... sending prayers to you both... |

| Listen to your vet and get the ultrasound done. Then you have an idea of what is going on. There are meds they can give if this is due to a heart condition.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I would have the ultrasound done or have a cardiologist see him. My pom had congestive heart failure and did very well for a year or so on medicine. I hope you can get him some relief.

| my first yorkie developed heart problems around 9 years of age. we had him on heart medication for almost two more years until cancer got him. he never showed any symptoms of cancer (he hid it well). Get the ultrasound, yorkies can live a normal life with heart medication. Good luck to you and your furbaby. hugs

| I want to say good luck to you in what you decide to do. I love my dogs so much and I know it would be devastating to hear this news. But I would really think about it, at 12 years old a dog is old and maybe not worth making your baby suffer through heart conditions or cancer. I don't know I may feel different about it then others but it could be very costly to treat and you can't guarantee an outcome. I will have you and your baby in my prayers |

| I have a 12 and a 13 yr. old Yorkie and I don't consider them 'old' knowing that with good care they could possibly live to 17/18 yrs. old. IMO if there is a way to give your furbaby a good quality of life with meds or whatever, then go for it. My 12 yr. old Yorkie has a pancreatic disease (EPI) but with meds and careful care she is happy and has a good quality of life. As long as her eyes are bright I will fight for her health.

| I am a strong believer in keeping our babies alive via whatever means necessary, as long as they still are comfortable, not suffering, and have some quality of life. When my first dog, Freeway, was diagnosed with cancer, we did surgery. He was 9, and lots of people commented on why we were doing surgery on a dog that age. Because we loved him! Because he deserved a chance! Do we not do surgery on an 80 yr old human?? The cancer came back and he was given 2 months. We kept him alive for more than 6 months with meds. It was expensive and difficult, he wouldn't take the meds so I had to crush them with water in a syringe and force it down his throat... but worth every single moment. I'm so sorry for what you are being faced with. I would suggest getting the ultrasound and seeing what you are up against and going from there. Medicine has come a long way, while it may not cure, it can provide more time. I just wish that all our furbabies could live as long as we do so we wouldn't have to go through this heart ache. I cry just thinking about it with my Oliver, and he's likely not even 2 yrs old yet.

| Aiha My gorgeous Chico is 3 1/2 years old and he got Auto Inmmune Anemia 1 1/2 week ago. We took him to the vet but they were closed on Saturday and we took him to Petsmart. Big mistake they sent us home with medicines, He was vomiting and getting worse. We took him to the vet on Monday. Thanks God! He had his blood levels at 10%. We should go to the hospital the same day we went to Petsmart He went to emergency Monday night, got a transfusion and stayed in the hospital until this Monday. He had some kidney problems, his BUN values were super super high, but now they are closer to normal. Any advice you can give me to take care of him at home and make him feel recovered soon? Any place where I can get recipes to cook him at home. The vet told me to do boiled chicken with potatoes, carrots and some pasta. Our baby looks so much better than 1 week ago. |

| Chico Thanks Lorie! Chico got her red blood cells up to 40%, just after 4 days to be discharged from the hospital. That is great. However he is still not doing good with his kidneys. He had his BUN values up to 90. He vomited on Saturday, we took him to the vet and gave him a medicine against nausea and taught us how to do liquids injecting them subcutaneous. We did that on Sunday and today and he has not vomited and had a great appetite. I cook for him every day. We hope his kidney issues go away. Thanks! Mapi |
