| The small dose of Comfortis is for 5 to 10 pound dogs Just spent the night worrying about Cubby. Vet said ok to give him Comfortis for flea problem, said it was okay for 3 pound dogs and up. Well, after I gave it to him, he became lethargic. At 3am he couldn't get up, couldn't walk, coudn't stand, could barely, hardly move his head and was shaking. I called my vet who referred me to the emergency number who referred me to a poison number which is 1-800-213-6680. They reassured me that he would be alright unless he was on a very high dosage of Heartguard, like the dosage they give for mainge(sp?). He wouldn't eat anything, drink anything or get up. It was just awful and frightening. Around 5am-ish he vomited. Still very, very lethargic and wobbly. Looks awfully sad. By 7:30am we were able to get him to walk outside, had to practically carry him out. He seemed better on the walk, but then he came back inside, very lethargic, wobbly, just laying on my lap like a limp dishrag. You could pick up his legs or paws and they would just drop, no response. He still wouldn't eat or drink except to lick water off my husband's finger. I called poison vet again, we were so worried. They wanted me to give him a snack but he wouldn't touch it. At 9am he took some Nutrical, a small dab. By 10am he was still so lethargic, doing absolutely nothing but laying limp on my lap and he's so, so tiny I am so worried about him. He wouldn't even eat his freeze dried chicken liver which he usually goes nuts over and wouldn't drink. I called poison center again and they recommended I try a little cooked rice with his normal food (he eats dry food only). I cooked the rice and mixed it with his dry food and he's eaten a little bit. Now he's back in bed. I looked up the Comfortis on the website, as the vet only gave me one pill in a plastic baggy so there wasn't any information. The directions say it's for dogs from 5 to 10 pounds !!!!! I had asked the vet if I should cut it in half and he said I didn't need to do that. Just wanted to warn you, vomiting, lethargy are side effects of Comfortis. I don't want anyone else to go through what we have been through with Cubby, we thought we were going to lose him. Jeanne

| Poison number 1-800-213-6680 I forgot to say in my last post that it's $35 to use the poison center. They take Visa. They give you a case number and then you can keep calling back without additional charges. They've been extremely nice, helpful and comforting.

| I went through the same thing with my Holly Berry. I had given it to her at night after she ate and that morning she had the exact same symptons that your dog had. I rushed her to the vet at 7 am and they kept her there for half a day. They gave her a shot and watched her. By 3:30 in the afternoon I was able to pick her up and she was back to her old little self. Since then, I will not give her the comfortis. My other 3 had no problems, even my 2 1/2 pound yorkie who is what I call very fragile did ok with it.

| Sorry for not getting back to you sooner Hi, I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. Cubby is fine and dandy. Around 7pm that night, he was up, feeling better and by the next day he was back to his normal peppy self. It took 30 hours to show signs of real recovery. I took him in to the vet that next morning and they were so, so sorry. Kept apologizing over and over. Later I saw vet at the gym and she was still apologizing. The poison vet had told me not to bring him to the vet that day as they would put him through all kinds of stuff that would be tough on him and that if I just waited he would be fine. They were right, thank goodness. I think I will take the advice of checking with them to see if any of them (there are 4 vets) are up on small dogs and consider taking him elsewhere. I appreciate all your concerns and Rhonda, I read the thread you had posted and I guess that may be what he had, invectim (sp) poisoning...??? Thank you for pointing me to it. Wish I'd seen it before. I will always come here from that now on before trying anything new on Cubby. We feel so fortunate that he got through it okay. As I type he is laying on my lap, my little computer buddy. Thank you and best wishes for a happy, healthy 2010. Jeanne ... Rub-A-Dub-Cub ... Cubby's Mom

| what they are referring to in the heart guard and high dose is ivermectin as heart guard has ivermectin in it and why i like interceptor better for toy breeds from what i have read. Luckily in california we do not need heart worm prevention so i avoid that as well as flea protection but have read alot about the reactions of those two drugs. I would be very upset with your vet as everything i have read says 5lbs or more - time for a new vet |

| also EVERYONE please do this before giving the dog a drug call the manufacturer and ask for instructions as i do this before giving any drug as a vet tried to give me a higher dose of atopica 25mg when i knew there was 10mg and that was the dose for my dog - i refused the med and went to dermatologist who confirmed that was too high of a dose for my dog. I called mfg as well who confirmed too high for my dog so sadly I trust pharmacists for humans and mfg more than vets when dealing with a drug. Human pharmacists know alot about drugs and many human drugs are used for dogs. For ex i was told a dog could not get hives after being on an antibiotic for 17 days yet my dog did on simplicef and when talking to a pharmacist they said absolutely that is an accumulated reaction as it increases in the body the body reacts which is different that immediate reaction which is facial swelling and throat swelling which is anaphalactic shock reaction two different reactions as vet thought i was nuts for thinking the antibiotic triggered hives in my dog and i knew it had to be it and hives are not fun as they take 5-7 days to get rid of them in an allergy dog. so very important educate yourself and call the manufacturer for correct doseage and what side effects are reported I have learned the hard way |
