| Multiple health problems- long Hi everyone, I am new here. I am the proud of owner of 3 Labrador Retrievers. Recently, we became the custodians of an older, abandoned, abused Yorkie. The vet suspects he is approx 12-13 years old. We have taken him to the vet two times. the first was just to clean him up from his ordeal. Someone disposed of him from a car...tossed him out the window. My son works at a vet hospital and was there when a good samaritan brought him in. There was nowhere for him to go, so he bought him home. We cleaned him up, got rid of the fleas...he was infested. Treated him with frontline, got him some good Senior canned food by nutramax and nursed him back to health. The 2nd trip to the vet was to get him rabies and distemper, and check for lyme's and heartworm.(both were negative, thankfully) The vet also found a significant heart murmur, 1 eye has glaucoma, the other had a severe laceration on it which caused it to ulcerate. We flush that eye twice a day and put on ointment. It already looks lots better. his coat, now that the fleas are gone, is starting to look nice. his skin is also coming around now that the fleas are gone also. his appetite is amazing...we feed him 2 times a day and he is always looking for more. unfortunately, he is missing a lot of teeth and the ones left are rotten. The vet said he cannot put him under to clean his mouth because of the heart murmur and his age. He said he would never wake up again. He also has a nasty benign growth on the one eye that we cant do anything about either. The problem is, the mouth causes him to smell. We have bathed him 2 times in a medicated, prescription oatmeal shampoo but he still really smells bad. Is there anything I can use to get rid of the smell? and can I do anything about his dental issues without putting him under? he will not let me brush his teeth. I think it is sore and he protests. i don't want to stress him out anymore. we are really starting to see his personality. He does know "sit" and "lay down". he lovesssss my Labs and my 10 year old daughter. We have named him Trooper, since he is a trooper. Is it bad to bathe him a lot? I am used to Labradors...they require no grooming, and maybe a yearly bath! Any help...advice would be necessary. Also...should he wear a coat or sweater? he always seems to be cold. Anything you can tell me would be a big help. This is my first small dog. We have decided to keep him and let him have a nice life until his time is up. thanks for the assistance. Susan |

| Susan, thank you for taking this poor little guy. I wouldn't bath him every day but I do bath my males every three days. There is also pet cologne you could use but I bet if you get his straigthened out, a lot of his smell will go away. he will have healthy skin. Also maybe keep him clipped short. I wouldn't worry too much about putting him under for teeth cleaning. They use new stuff now especially for toy dogs. You will eventually have a wonderful, happy baby. Thank you again. |

| Your vet could put him on an antibiotic if his teeth are infected. My sister's dog is 16 and not able to be put under so she puts him on an antibiotic at least every other month to keep the infection at bay. |

| Bless you for taking in this poor baby and giving him a loving home! I wouldn't wash him too often or it could dry out his skin & cause itching. I have seen some mouthwash spray for dogs, but I've never tried it. I think you're on the right track, just keep doing what your doing. Thank you!

| Many KUDDO'S to you for taking him in The mouth sprays help a "tad" as long as there isn't infection involved, can't cover that smell up. Hopefully with no infection it will get better for you. I also used a solution (not sure of name) i got online, you add 1/2 capful to their water daily, it's supposed to help with fresh breath....I'll search for it and get back and post it for you, unless someone post before hand....GOD BLESS PEOPLE LIKE YOU

| This poor baby and what he has been threw. Thrown out the window of a car? Some people are just plain evil! Bless your son and you for giving this little lost one a compy place to live. I would ask your vet about his teeth. If the gums are inflamed, due to bad teeth, he must be in pain. Also infection can travel threw the body if any teeth are infected. I hope this baby does well and has many years of being loved. Last edited by ARCHIE; 10-05-2009 at 12:28 PM. |

| Thank you for taking him and and giving him a loving home. My foster Truman has a horrible mouth infections when I brought him home and the vet treated him with an antibiotic. This is most likely why his mouth smells so badly. Soemone else mentioned that it could spread and that is also true. With mine it had spread to his ears and chest. I am going to see if someone with more experience with teeth and dentals can help you. Hang in there.

| I just saw a thread about this product and it seems like it may be an answer for your problem. An oral spray or gel that helps. I haven't tried it but think I will be soon. Go to petzlife.com for more info. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | you and your family are so good to have taken him in. Your vet is right to worry about putting him under for a teeth cleaning but it does sound like he really needs one. the rest of his teeth are probably so rotten that they are held in with tartar. once clean they will probably just pop out. its unfortunately but i've seen it many times. I would ask your vet if there are any specialists in teh area that could do the dental. this way your yorkie will be heavily monitored during the surgery and he'll be with experience people who will know what to do if a problem arises. there's not much you can do with brushing or a spray. Antibiotics are probably a good idea tho to help knock out an infection.

| I have had a few older pups come into my home as fosters with horrible teeth and also with other medical conditions. I am not sure how bad his murmur is, but if he is left with infected gums like that, he will end up with serious problems and will die anyway. We always do the dentals on them because they are going to die if we do not. We do a full blood panel on them to make sure nothing really awful is going on. Then, the vet runs fluids during the procedure. I personally feel it is best to get those nasty teeth out so that they have a chance at a bit of a life. If they die during the anesthesia at least they did not suffer. I am sure people will think my outlook is strange, but I know what will happen to them if we don't get the infection out! I can think of two old men offhand who came to me like that....we gave them a good life until the end because we got those awful teeth out! One of them was Winston, a pup that many YTers watched and loved! He came out of the anesthesia ready to romp! It was so funny....it was like he was SO happy to get those teeth out! I don't know how bad that murmur is, but I would probably take him to a cardiologist for an opinion! Just my thoughts.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | That is so wonderful of you to keep him to live out his life in a loving home. You can see where your son gets his compassion. I would probably get the dental done at a place that can really monitor him during the surgery too.
