Sick since kennel cough vaccine ... now pneumonia!! My little Dunkin who is just over six months old received his kennel cough vaccine about three weeks ago. The next few days he was coughing and clearing his throat constantly, but they said it was a side effect of the vaccine. It didn't go away, so I took him to the vet that weekend, and they said he was fine but gave me some cough pills to relieve any discomfort. Before I could use them, his cough miraculously disappeared but a few days later he emerged very, very congested. The worst times were in the morning and after naps ... he could hardly breath out of his little nose. I look him to the vet again yesterday and he had a fever of 105 degrees and had lost 7 ounces in 10 days! (He was originally only 2lb 15oz). They gave me antibiotics and did blood work. Today, the blood work revealed a high white blood cell count, and they think it may be pneumonia. We are heading to the vet tonight for xrays. Has anyone else had this problem with the kennel cough vaccine?? Is he going to be okay?? I'm quite nervous about his weight loss, since he's already so tiny! |
Yes kennel cough can be caused by the vaccine, which is largely ineffective any way....and usually a vet will prescribe antiboitic to ward off it developing into pneumonia. The fever probably caused him to become dehydrated and that's lead to his weight loss. Sending prayers he gets better soon. |
Sending good wishes for your baby to be well again. Buddy never had a reaction from the Boradella shot and I am sorry your's did. I no longer get it for him because he get's groomed by me and does not get boarded so i feel there is no reason to give it to him. Hope your little one recovers quickly. |
Momo was sick for 3 months after his Bordatella shot when he was a pup. He was on 3 rounds of antibiotics, what finally worked was upping the dose to 1ml from .3ml. But that caused his stomach irritations, it's important to give them probiotics, like yogurt. A note about the x-rays. Yorkies have a large heart shadow that appears in the x-rays. Some inexperienced vets might diagnose him w/an enlarged heart (that's what happened to me & Momo). If his heart sounds ok, don't be alarmed. I spent hundreds of $ on an echocardiogram bc of the above, when everything was ok. |

Has Momo received the vaccination again since then? Did it go any smoother? |
Any immunization shot or nose drops can be fatal to puppies and adults. All these immunization medications do not come from the same company and can vary in age and strength. I'm so sorry your baby is going thru this and I will be sending well wishes to him. |

Thank you everyone for your advice and prayers! The x-rays revealed that the infection had not turned into pneumonia yet ... what a relief! Dunkin is on antibiotics and hopefully we will start noticing a difference in his health very soon. :) |
Yay! Way to go Dunkin, hope you'll feel better soon.:) |
That is good news. Keep up the good work Dunkin and feel better real soon.:getwellso |
Sending well wishes to your little guy :aimeeyork |
So happy to read that Dunkin doesn't have pneumonia! Bella also had a reaction to the Bordatella vacine and ended up with Kennel cough. She got the nasal and and a couple of day's later developed the cough. She was put on meds right away and took a few weeks before she was better. They did tell me that next time they would give her the shot instead, since the shot is a dead virus verses the nasal being a live virus. Praying for a speedy recovery for Dunkin! |
