Kiddo has HGE! My beloved little Kiddo was admitted to the vet hospital this morning with HGE (Hemorraghic Gastroenteritis). He has had just a few symptoms over the past week - slightly loose stool, a little lethargic. Two mornings ago he started throwing up, so I took him to the vet. They said he was healthy and maybe just needed a change in diet. Then early this morning on our walk, he started vomiting - there were little bits of bright red blood. I took him home to call the vet, and he had bloody diarrhea as well. Needless to say, the vet admitted him and immediately hooked him up to an IV. The poor guy was dehydrated. Has anyone had experience with this awful sickness? I am so worried about Kiddo - they say he will need to stay for at least 3 days. |
I havent but wanted to bump this for you and to say I sure hope Kiddo gets well soon. |
Hi and welcome to YT!! Sending prayers for a quick recovery Kiddo! Here you can find more info: Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis (HGE) : The Paw Blog Good thing you caught it early. Keep us updated... |
I will keep Kiddo in my prayers! Went through this with Nolee a few months ago! It was very scary! Luckily he was back to normal a couple of days after they sent him home! Wishing you the best! |
My Cali went through it a few months ago. I took her in to the vet during the day and they IV'd her meds and fluids and let me take her home at night. She was so sick so I know how you feel. She had a bit of a relapse a couple of weeks late but medicine quickly fixed her. Last saturday I took her into the vet because although she wasn't throwing up or bloody poop she had the same look in her eyes and was lethargic. When the vet took her temp the thermometer came out bloody so he said it was a good thing I brought her in. I wonder if your vet will let you bring him home at night if no one is there at night. My vet just wrapped up the IV shunt so they wouldn't need to reinsert each day. I will keep your baby in my prayers and you too, it is scary when they get that. Please keep us posted. |
Lady's had HGE three times! Do you know what his packed volume was? That will determine how serious it is. Lady's first two cases were pretty mild, but the last time her packed volume was 82 and she was very, very ill. Supportive care/IV is the key to survival with HGE. Thank heavens you got him to the vet quickly. Here is a good article: Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis (HGE) |
How scary. I hope Kiddo has a quick recovery. Best wishes! |
are you feeding raw ? it is usually due to coming in contact with dead animal, etc - here is some more info on it as my friends yorkie gets it alot and once they get it once they are susceptible to getting it again Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis-HGE Canine Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis (HGE) ~ Pawprints and Purrs, Inc. this is from a friend of mine below : Not contagious at all......and yes HGE starts MOST times with vomitting. I know I have passed this article on a few times. DogCare - Hemorraghic Gastroenteritis HGE is not contagious. It primarily affects younger dogs, but may be seen in all ages. Toy and medium-sized dogs appear to be at increased risk. The disease is characterized by a sudden onset of vomiting, dehydration and profuse bloody diarrhea. As the condition progresses, the dog will eventually go into a state of circulatory collapse * that is, the veins will collapse due to dehydration and loss of fluid from the intestinal tract. If the disease is untreated, death will come from dehydration, hypothermia and shock. I have been thru this many, many times...Lucy had it just last month. We cannot find the cause, so the treatment is given immediately. My vet knows I know my dogs and the symptoms of this. If caught early they are fine...I do believe many dogs are tested to death...this condition requires immediate treatment of fluids, no solid foods, and a course of anti diarrhea/antibiotic medication...mine are always put on Amphorol and respond very quickly.
