Earlier I posted that I thought Roxy was having a hypoglycemic episode. Now I'm not so sure. I gave her maple syrup when that happened a few hours ago. She is now walking around the apartment and stumbling. She will not sit still. She is carrying toys around in her mouth while she paces and walks diagonally and clumsily. She's also bumping into chairs and the wall. Is there anything I can do for her until I take her to the vet tomorrow???

Oh poor baby. How old is she? I would be cautious what you feed her between now and when you get her to the vet. Sadly, her symptoms could be indicative of a liver problem. So I would just feed her maybe some boiled chicken and rice for now as a precaution.

This sounds so much like liver issues. She needs a Bile Acid Test. Please get to the vet asap and set up an appointment for a Bile Acid Test. I would first have your vet Tonight or tomorrow do a full blood panel. Please let us know.

She's 5. I'm so worried about her. I wish she would just lay down and sleep but she won't stop pacing. A few times I've seen her eyes start closing while she's pacing and she'll stumble. Can this wait until morning or is this an emergency? She was at the vet last week for what the vet diagnosed as swollen anal glands, but when the blood work results came back it turned out that her liver enzymes were elevated. The vet said maybe it was just because she was fighting her anal gland infection.

Go to the ER NOW when you get back, post her results, I know someone will be on that knows more than I do. Also I would sign asap on Yahoo support group for liver shunts and MVD. There will be people online that can give you more advise but for now you need to go to the ER...Good Luck and let us know. Ellie May helped me.

Sometimes feeding high protein meals to a dog that has liver issues will trigger this kind of reaction.

Roxy is not doing well

We were at the emergency clinic until 3am last night. Her heart rate is low and she is still disoriented and can barely stand. They did some preliminary bloodwork and it seems to be something with the liver, or possibly a brain tumor. She is only 5 so I am devastated. She is at her regular vet today receiving an IV and having a bile acid test done. She is also scheduled for an ultrasound on Saturday. I am scared to death but will keep you posted. The high protein diet could very well be a possibility. I rescued Roxy from my mom who was feeding her kibbles and bits, table scraps, and not giving her medical care. I took her and transitioned her to wellness super5 mix small breed and now natural balance potato and duck. I thought I was doing the right thing, but can't help but to feel guilt that she is so sick now

Im so sorry your baby is not doing well, Make sure the vet is knows how to treat Yorkies. If they dont then call around and find another. Your acid Bile test should be preformed only when the dog has fasted for 12 hours. This even means no water. Then they will draw blood. After that they will feed a high protein diet then draw blood again. They should do a comparison. Please post these results. Good Luck and we are all praying for you and Roxy. I'm so sorry your baby is sick. I just took Bailey in not too long ago and found out he has chronic pancreatitis

. I've had to completely alter his diet by talking with a nutritionist. I'll do anything for him. I have empathy for what you are going through. HUGS!

I am sorry to say, but this does sound Liver related. Either Liver Shunt or MVD....But please try to relax, this is not a death sentence. If she has a Liver Shunt, the success rate for surgery to close the shunt is very high ~ then she just needs to be managed with a special low, but quality protein diet (Rx kibble) and special liver aiding meds and supplements. And if this is MVD, no surgery can be done, only managed with special diet / supplements...Honey, she is going to be ok, she is at the Vet being taken care of, the proper tests are being done

Here is some info on the Protein C test. Print it out and give it to your Vet. IMO this should be done before you get the Ultrasound ~ it is a good guide for LS and MVD

Thank you everyone for your concern!

Roxy had an ultrasound today and they believe that they found a liver shunt. They're not sure completely sure if it is operable but it looks promising. She also seems to have kidney stones as a result of all this. I am meeting with her primary vet on monday to discuss options. She has already improved a lot over the past few days just by being on lactulose, metranidozale, and prescription canned food.
