Help! My baby ate chocolate cake! Ok so I need some help please! I left a small piece of chocolate bundt cake on the table while I took a shower and when I got out he had just finished eating it! I don't know what to do! He is extremely hyper and won't calm down! I'm scared to death because I have heard that chocolate will kill a dog and I don't know actually how much chocolate is in it to know if it will hurt him or not! Will someone please help me! I can't lose my Charlie! |
Milk chocolate isn't as deadly as the dark chocolate. I don't know how much he had, I would call your vet if you have a 24 hour vet(meaning they're on call.) My sister in laws shih a poo ate a box of chocolates one time, and she got him in to the vets. He had diarrhea real bad, but made it through. Please call the vets office. they should have an answering service hopefully |
I live in a small town so there isn't a 24 hour vet! Also it was chocolate cake and not like a chocolate bar so I don't think it actually has chocolate in it, just cocoa! I don't know if that makes it better or worse! He has calmed down now and is sleeping. I am going to stay up with him to see if he potties and to make sure he does ok! I'm just so scared! |
If it happened less than an hour or so ago, you need to call a vet and see if they want you to induce vomiting. I have no idea how much chocolate is in a piece of chocolate cake but cocoa isn't good... If you don't have an ER vet there, there must be one a town or two over that you can call or if not, some of the vets in your town should have information on what to do in an emergency on their answering machines. |
It happened about 2 hours ago! He seems to be doing ok....he has drank a lot of water but has yet to poop or pee. I cannot get a hold of the local vet. I am in the process of trying to get a hold of a vet nearby right now. The piece he ate was probably about 1-1 1/2'' long and 1'' wide. |
This site is very helpful in determining how toxic the quantity is. Chocolate and Dog Poisoning I would be extremely concerned if the ate the cocoa - but once you mix in the flour, eggs, butter, etc., you are probably looking at more of an upset tummy. Do a little math and compare the quantity he ate to that site and see what it says. I hope that helps! There is also a dog poison control hotline if you can't reach a 24 hour vet. I hope he is OK! |
Thank you all for your help and support! He seems to be doing fine as of now! It has been 2 1/2 hours and he hasn't vomited or had diarrhea so I think he is going to be ok! I've tried to get a hold of every vet in my area and no luck. If he isn't normal in the morning I will contact the vet as soon as they open. Thank you guys again. If you have any other suggestions please let me know! |
I dont think you should worry to much. My DH didn't know dogs were not suppose to have chocolate, and one night I walked into the kitchen while he was having his nightly Hostess cupcake(chocolate cake)and noticed he was sharing with our little Ryle. Well I started flipping, out telling him OMG!!!! dont you know dogs can't have chocolate? He informed me that they share a cupcake every night!! Who knew? I think your baby will be o.k.:) |
That is so reassuring! I've tried to get him to stay up with me in the living room but he keeps going back into the bedroom to sleep with daddy! He seems to be doing alright. Nothing out of the norm but a little hyper right after he ate it! I think he is going to be ok in the morning! Thanks for the info, you have no idea how much better that makes me feel! :p I think I can maybe try to go to sleep now since I have calmed down! Thanks to all of you again! |
oh man how scary, i am glad he is doing, now you know he likes chocolate and you cant leave any on his way :p |
Thanks. Yeah I will have to make sure I don't leave any kind of chocolate where he can get to it. I didn't think he could get to it on the table but he did! We never feed him people food because he is only about 5 months and we don't want him getting a upset tummy so this was his fix for the rest of his life. LoL. |
Yes, cocoa would be really bad. How is he doing today? |
My mom and grandma were sharing Reese's peanut butter cups one day. Well I guess when they went to open them one dropped on the floor and bailey got and entired cup! Neither one of them told me and were whispering. I asked them what they were whispering about and after some prodding they said now don't freak out, but bailey ate one of the cups that fell on the floor. What?! how can I NOT freak out?!?! AND how can you keep that from me?! I call the vet right away and they told me to watch him for a couple hours to see how he was. He was perfectly fine, but it scared me to death! I was so mad at my mom and grandma, but from that moment on they've never kept anything from me again because i've explained it's better for me to be paranoid then not at all. |
Charlie is doing just fine! He is as good as new! It's as if nothing ever happened! It scared me to death though. Thanks for your concern-Haleys_Mom- I will know next time to put all cake out of reach! LoL I feel like the most horrible mom ever! :( I will have to remember the peanut butter cup scare just incase I make a goof again! Glad to hear Bailey was alright! |
I just wanted to add, that sometimes the effects of chocolate poisoning aren't known for three days, it doesn't affect the intestinal tract as badly as it affects the nervous system, and yes cake with cocoa, has chocolate. Here's some more information on what chocolate does to dogs. Chocolate and Dog Poisoning |
