Diarhea - What To Give Help? Hi I put a call into my vet but have not heard back. Just wondering if anyone on here knows what I can give and how much to give for diarhea. I'm not sure of the cause. I fed them canned Chicken Soup which they've eaten in the past but whether it's a coincidence or not I don't know but two of them have diareah since eating it. Noel is a bigger Yorkie about 17 lbs. and Lilly is tiny 3.5 lbs. Noel had bloody diareah but now just plain diareah but not as bad and now Lilly started but she just has an upset tummy and diareah but no blood. Is there something over the counter and if so how much do you give? I'm still waiting for the vet to call but it's the holiday weekend. ARGH. Thanks. Elaine |
You can give pepto bismal. It is one teaspoon per 20 lbs every 4 to 6 hrs. Or give canned pumpkin I usually just give a teaspoon |
no pepto as it has aspirin in the new formula the old formula didn't canned organic pumpkin from whole foods NOT PUMPKIN PIE |
Buddy was sick about two weeks ago also Elaine and I did try the canned pumpkin someone suggested and it's worked! I hope you get the same results. He loved it. I just put about 2tbs into his dish and he gobbled it right up. Maybe a day and he started to firm up. Good luck to your pups, hope it's just something that the pumpkin will clear up. Oh, I also only feed him chicken and rice for a couple of days, no treats, only the pumpkin as a treat. |

I was told by my vet that kaopectate is better for them than pepto. I would also just give about a teaspoon of canned pumpkin first |

I should look in the book I bought that was written by 2 vets to see what they say. I do remember thumbing through it, and I even remember seeing how much of what to give(per pound) dang, vets can't even agree on anything these days! |

KAOPECTATE/IMMODIUM (loperamide): Can be given to dogs and cats (1 teaspoon for every 20 pounds) for diarrhea. This dosage can be repeated every 4-6 hours for 24 hours, or until symptoms begin to resolve. OTC Medications |
a friend of ours has a phd in radiology and runs asecs surgery radiology dept and taught at the ohio state university she is the one that said NO pepto as it has the aspirin and sulcrulfate is pepto without the aspirin and better to use -- not sure on the kaopectate as have never used that or asked about it with vets as have not needed to. the aspirin i have heard that is safe is the one sold at petsmart for dogs Vetrin Aspirin: Pet Joint Pain Medication For Dogs - 1800PetMeds |
Warning!!! Update please read. First thanks to all that responded. I'm cross posting what I wrote in the general discussion forum. PLEASE READ. THE DIAREHA CAME FROM CHICKEN SOUP PLEASE DO NOT FEED. SEE BELOW. PLEASE anyone who feeds tbeir dog Chicken Soup PLEASE STOP FEEDING IT. I posted in the sick forum that Noel had bad Diarhea and was looking for what to give her. I had no idea it was from the food. Shortly after posting ALL my Yorkies started with the bloody diarhea and my Lilly got very sick throwing up, listless and diarhea. I started to then wonder if it was the food. I have been feeding them this food for a long time no problems until now. I called the vet but did not mention the food thing, just said about the diarhea and what should I do. He thought it may be a bug and told me to feed them rice and if not clear in a few days then bring them in. Tonight at work, the owner of the store I bought the food at came in and I asked her if she had any problems with Chicken Soup and she said that she's had three returns this week and that she called the company and that they told her they changed the formula but that it should not make any of the dogs sick. They told her to send in the can for analazis. Well, I still have four cans and I am not returning them. We all know how these food companies analize and cover up. By the way I also found out that Diamond Food is the manufacturer of Chicken Soup and in case you don't know it Diamond Food was involved with the food recall last time. PLEASE DON'T TAKE A CHANCE DO NOT USE CHICKEN SOUP. I am sick over this and pray to God my dogs are alright. I'm watching them. The vet is closed until Tuesday now and I'm a wreck. I may have to take them to the emergency vet. They seem fine just sick and diarhea. Elaine |
