| My sick baby refuses to eat med~ =( Hi all, My baby boy, Benji is turning 4 months this coming 9th April. He has been coughing for almost 2 weeks now, and after a visit to the vet, Benji has to be on antibiotics for 10 days. The problem is, he refuses to take the meds. My boyfriend and I had to force open his mouth. My heart hurts everytime we had to do that to him, but it is for his own good. Is there anyway I can make him take the meds the easy way? Help and advise needed... thx... |

YT 3000 Club Member | Have you tried some cheese, or if he can tolerate cottage cheese, or some wet dog food, they are a burger for pills, too smart for their own good. You can try some white rice that might work |

| We have never gave him anything else besides his dry food which we soak b4 giving it to him. The vet did not like the idea of putting the meds in his food as the amount consumed may differ. He just simply asked us to force feed him... |

| If the pill is large, break it up and put it in some cheese. Not a lot of cheese. If the pill is small, same thing. OR, get some canned dog food. I did this. I took a teaspoon, put the wet food on it, the pill crushed into it. My Jemma eats only dry food so she thought this a real treat. She lapped the food right off the spoon. That way I knew she had it all. I found the canned dog food the best for this. |

Both of these are great ideas, The only thing I would add would be to give her a taste of the cheese or wet food alone before you give with the pill in it. I once did it with the pill first and Milo smelled the pill and would not take it. Some pills are very smelly to them. So what I do now is give him a tiny peace of cheese, than a peace of cheese with the pill, and then a peace of cheese. When I first started doing it I would say the word cheese as he was eating it. Now all I have to say is who wants the cheese and he comes running and sits in front of the fridge waiting for his medicine. | |

| If the vet gave you pills, ask if it is safe to crush them and if so, you can crush, add a very small amount of liquid and then use a syringe. It is still forcing, but gentler than jamming a pill down his throat. If the pill is small, we've never had issues hiding in piece of cheese.

| I would wrap the pill in a piece of cheese or a deli meat. If it's liquid I just force it down, theres really no way to get them to just take the medicine, their like little kids |

| We have used cheese or a tiny bit of peanut butter. The vet suggested both but not in an abundant amount.

| Thank you very much for all the ideas. Benji isnt on pills, liquid form. The med smells really strong and he would be making noise whenever he knows its time for his meds... =) We still force the meds right now. Once a day only due to our working timing, altho the vet mentioned twice a day. He is getting a lil better, but still coughing very much... |

| if he is supposed to get the med TWO times a day then that's how many times HE NEEDS IT. work out a schedule. your really not doing him much good with just 1time, You could LOOSE him for not treating him properly. You don't havce to force his mouth open. at the corners of his mouth, stick your finger between teeth and gums and slowly just shoot the med in his mouth. you might need to get a syringe from the vet to do this. Is he on a pink liquid or yellow liquid? eitherway He is NOT being treated properly. He NEEDS the meds twice a day. VERY IMPORTANT... Good Luck, OR call the vet to see if it comes in a pill form?? Don't take a chance on him getting worse......He is only a BABY at 16wks... this could turn into pneumonia......Sharon |

| This helped for me for a liquid.... Assuming it's 5ml or 10ml per dose....I opened a can of tuna. the smell alone will cover any smell of the med Gave my pup a small taste (finger tip amount) so he knew what he was liking I put the med dose on a tablespoon, put a finger tip amount of tuna in the meds and mixed it around, my pup licked it right off the spoon... I made sure the tuna was a little "watery" not completely squeezed to where it's dried. GOOD LUCK TO YOU! Be sure to give proper dose twice a day, you can do it!!!!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | You really *must* give it twice a day as prescribed - giving it once a day will NOT get rid of infection bc antibiotics have short half-lives. If you give it once a day, you could create an antibiotic resistant bug in your dog - and that could be a disaster for him. If given only once a day, you are actually putting your dog in more danger.
