crystals in urine and small infection??? My female Yorkie is almost 12 months. She has peeing everywhere and I had a uranalisis done. It came back that she has a bit of infection and tiny crystals in her urine. The vet wanted to change her diet ,do xrays to see if she had Bladder stones. I said i thought that doing antibiotics first to see if it clears up was the best way to start. Seeing as the crystal were very tiny I am hoping it is just an infection. I have only had her since November so if she does have bladder stones I am thinking that she might have come with them and I will be pretty upset. I purchased her for breeding so I am worried there may be more issues and I won't be able to use her.... I will lose alot of money I will never be able to sell her for what I purchased her for. It will also break my heart because i am very attached to her now. Has anyone else had this? IF so what was wrong? I know that there can be many other issues it could be... But I am just worried about her. |
do you know what type of crystals they are? Since you are considering breeding you'll need to have a blood panel and bile acid test done anyway so I recommend having that done. Liver shunts and mvd can cause the formation of stones and ammonium crystals. Of course this may not be the case at all but I'd definitely check, especially since liver issues are so common with yorkies and you are wanting to breed her in the future |
Yes I was aware of liver shunts and MVD, but didn't know if there is something else I should know about. I want to be prepared for when I have her next sample done. I do plan on doing testing but my Yorkies are still to young. They have to be at least 18 months. My Female won't even be 1 until next month. My male ca have it done soon though! |

I would send her urine for culture. The type of crystals need to be identified. |

My vet said all the testing can't be done util 18 months.... So if there is testing that can be done now what can I do?? I think they are unfamiliar with Yorkie testing most people around where I live are just byb and don't do testing or care about genetics .... hhmmm they didn't say anything about finding out what kind of crystals I didn't know i could do that! Thanks so much! I want to know as much as I can by next week when her urine will be retested. |
Bile acids testing can be done anytime after 20 weeks. When talking about the OFA for LP and hip problems, that you may need to wait on. There eyes, ears and hearts should be checked but I'm not sure on the age. |
My Cali had an infection and crystals and the medicine cleared it right up. She never had another one. She does have a very mild MVD that requires no treatment. Hope your baby feels better soon. |
its best to get the xrays done then have the crystals sent to a lab to see what kind they are. theres different prescripyion foods for different stones. my vet played the guessing game and made it much more worse on my Yorkie. they sedated. They took 4 xrays. No big stones but lots and lots of Crystals, Blocking his urine. They put in cathider to empty his urinary bladder. Then, they examined crystals and filled him back up with water to push back the blockage of Crystals. They put him on antibiotis and S/D prescription diet food to help with dissolving the Crystals but this only helped for awhile and he ended up blocked up once again. and they did the same thing to him. I had had enough and told them this is not working we need surgery. so they agreed and he had sugery but 6 months later they were back and he had to have surgery again. he is now to stay on S/D prescription diet food and only drinks bottled water. so far so good. heres afew sites that I read and have helped out alot. Bladder Stones Prescription Diet: Therapeutic Pet Food for Cats and Dogs | Hill's Pet Nutrition and heres all are threads with alot of info on them if you have time to go through them all. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/off...eep-up-me.html |
Thank You so much!!! If she does have stones or problems with crystals is this hereditary can she still be breed??? |

If they are ammonium urate, it would be related to a liver problem and she should not be bred. Not sure on the other types. |
I am calling my vet first thing in the morning and asking if they tested to see what kind of crystals. I have to have her urinalisis done again on thursday. I am going to ask about bloodwork then because she will be 1 yr next month. I want to get that done as soon as I can and the acid bile test. Tx so much !! |
I just talked to the vet and he said that her crystals were calcium oxalate and I am getting her urinalysis done again tomorrow to see if it has cleared. |
She has no crystals but a few white blood cells. The vet said it may be because she is coming into heat. So 1 more week of antibiotics just to make sure. |
