10 week old Yorkie Pup Roadtrip worry!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!! Hey everyone, this is my first thread. Two days a go I just got my baby boy yorkie, he's almost 11 weeks. I got him from a 4 hour drive there and 4 hours drive back. The whole trip went perfectly fine. Today, my partner and I had to travel 6-7 hours away from our city to pick up his new car, no one was avalible to take care of my baby boy and I didn't think leaving him at home by himself especially on his 3rd day with us was a very good idea. So I did some internet surfing the night before and read in many websites that it was okay to take a 10 week old puppy on a road trip. But I just needed to be prepared. I was prepared. I had everything in our car with us to make him feel comfortable. He didn't want to sleep on his dog bed so he kept crawling on my lap which was fine by me. He slept most of the way there and back. He did drink and eat a little until I started feeding him from my hand. My concern is I let him outside on the concrete and he went toilet (pee pee) ONCE. Every pit stop (5 to be precise) I let him outside on the concrete to do his business but he never did... He was so shocked by the outside enviorment with the cars travelling by he didn't want to stand out on the concrete for too long. Also when we were in a small town a dog came by and they just sniffed at eachother, barely even touched eachother. Every now and then he would stick his tongue out and breath heavily, I assume he was thirsty but he never drank the water I offered him. Why do dogs stick their tongue out and breath heavily like as if they've just come back from a long run, but mine did it when he would wake up every now and then. Mind you the weather was pretty hot and we had the windows right down for the wind to blow in his face. We got home from the long trip (15 hours in total) and I had totally forgotten that he wasn't allowed on the grass but I had put him down for 2 mins and he was sniffing at the mud so I picked him up striaght away. He ate and drank plenty of water and also played until he fell asleep recently. I just found out that puppies with only ONE vaccination is not allowed out of the house. I am really worried that something will happen to him in the next couple of days... Can someone please reassure me or is there anything like signs or behaviors I should keep my eye out on right now. He is the cutest little thing ever and has bought so much joy in my life. I really don't want to be losing him just yet. Please please please help me. |
The panting could have been from being in the car and anxiety of going somewhere . He was ok. My Suzi always pants when nervous or excited. Your puppy also has certain antibiodies from his mother. He did have a vaccination too, which is better then none at all. There is no way in knowing what if anything he could have been exposed to. pLease try not to worry too much .. Chances are high that your little guy will be just fine. I know it is scary but what is done is done. Just be sure you follow the vaccination schedule your pup is on. If there will be any kinds of symtoms it would not happen until days later. Things to watch out for would be vomiting , dierreha, any discharge from the eyes or nose, any blood in the stools, fever, lethargy, not eating, and wanting to sleep all the time. If you notice any illness more then a day take him in to the vet so he can be treated right away, this is the most important . Catching it early so he can be treated. However, I believe he will be just fine ! It is not 100% for sure, but I want you to relax and not feel so much stress . |
He should be ok. The panting could also be from a bit of car sickness. |
I don't want to scare you but I had a shihtzu puppy that passed away 3 weeks after we got him. He only had his first shots and we had taken him outside to the park once. I am not sure why he passed but he would get tired easily and breath heavily and have to lay down alot. |
i really think you'll be ok. just be careful and watch the puppy carefully. When i first got my little girl i did not want to keep her in the house, i wanted to show her off!:) i would just keep her in the house for a little bit and watch her.. |
Thank you for all your replies... :) :animal36 We slept last night at midnight and he woke up this morning around 8:45AM to go toilet on the newspaper in our room, then I put him back on our bed and he fell back asleep... this morning around 7AM, he woke up and woke me up too by making noises that sounded like he had something stuck in his throat, I just kept petting him until he was done, I didn't think anything came out and thought it was his fur or carpet fluff he's been biting on. He went straight back to sleep afterwards. Now I see two little brownish marks on his pillow, there's no smell I don't think, or it must of dried up. I think it's from his cough because he hasn't gone toilet (only for a pee pee). I know I shouldn't be worrying too much, but this is really worrying me... Especially when MSCAT said I should watch him sleeping a lot which he is doing but no other symptoms yet. Might I add, he slept A LOT during our trip... I just thought he was bored because there was no where to possibly go. The second night, he woke us up at 7AM and just kept playing throughout the day until night. his 2nd vaccination is on the 12th of March, Any additional help would be much appreciated. |
yea, I wouldn't worry to much, you said he sounded like he had something in his throat. Sounds like maybe this was a reverse sneeze. Which is normal for this breed. I do recommend you looking up the breed online and researching the breed carefully if you haven't done so. :D There is alot of helpful info out there. This may also make you feel better. My boy loves the car, I take him everywhere. And I did when he was a little one. When i first started taking him out he would get car sick, but once they are in the car for a little while this will subside and they will get used to it. I know that most Yorkies love going on car rides. :p |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk! Oh, sorry!! :teethysmi Welcome to Yorkie Talk!! There are alot of great people on this site, and they do have alot of great advice. :yorkietal:yorkiesar |
Welcome to YT!!! I think he will be ok...he could have had a hair ball or like the other poster said...reverse sneezing...which my KiKi did a lot when she was little. |

Suzi sometimes has reverese sneezing too. It is harmless . Ask about the cough on the next appointment if he still has it. |
Oh I see, Thank you so much, thank you all for welcoming Yoshi and I to yorkietalk :) Yoshi has been eating and playing well with me and his toys, he goes pee pee and has done his business, all looked normal, no blood in stools. I was just a little worried that he may have caught a cold from the little sneezes he's been doing, but i will take your word for it and see how things go in the next couple of days. Thank you all so much again, if there is any websites you can recommend to me that you think will be useful, please do list them. :animal-pa |
Hi there, Your puppy is probably tired like you are from the ride. Reverse sneezing is real. 10 weeks is a baby, they need lots of naps. Lay low for awhile and keep an eye on the pup. Make sure the pup is eating and drinking if only a little. You will be okay. |
I've learned with my Gabby that very tiny pups should not get all the shots at once--make sure you mention your concern to your vet-also-wait until your baby is back to normal before he gets another vaccine. I'm naturally a worrier --hope I don't rub off on you:rolleyes: |
Welcome to YT :wavey: How is your little guy today? Wow - he has done a lot of traveling in his short time with you. The good thing is you know he doesn't get car sick. The panting is usually a sign of anxiety & when my Roxy does it on a car trip - that's her way of saying she needs to potty. You might find some helpful info here in this link as a new yorkie owner http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...w-parents.html |
My baby won't stop CRYING :( please help Thank you for all your replies, he is doing fine at the moment. I am glad I didn't take him to the vet and had spent a lot of money on a check up. Since he's at my house now, he has stopped sneezing. I gave Yoshi his first bath today and he hated the water... It was hard to wash him since he kept trying to jump out. I blow dried his hair and he was shivering for a wee while but is okay now and is himself again. My new concern: The first day we got him, I had to stay at my boyfriends house for 4 days straight so I had Yoshi with me the entire time. Today I've bought him to his actual house and he loves it because its big and he can run around everywhere. My problem is, he won't stop following me and crying if he can't find me. I put him in his play pin (play pin has no door) but that makes things worse and he just cries and barks for ages. I'll pop downstairs for a while and he'll whine and cry because he can't get down the stairs. I'm going to be starting uni soon so I will have to keep him in the play pin when no one else is home to look after him... How long can you keep a puppy in their crate/play pin for in a day unattended? And how do I stop him from crying? The first night we got him, we put him in this high box next to our bed with lots of soft toys and he kept crying, I put my hand down but it still didn't help until hours later. The second night it went on longer and we gave in and just let him sleep in our bed. The third and fourth night we tried again but no luck, he would cry for at least 3-4 hours, he would fall asleep and our slightest move would wake him up and he would start to cry again. So again, we picked him up and let him sleep in our bed. If I'm on the bed and he's on the ground, he'd whine and cry for me to put him on the bed, once he's on the bed, if I have to get up for 1 second, the whining and crying begins until I sit back down with him. I can't help but pick him up and comfort him, how long should I let him crying for? He cries for HOURS! Is there a routine we can do to help him to stop crying and also potty training. At my boyfriends house, he went potty on the newspaper at the same spot. Here he is doing it in a lot of different places. I've sprayed water once until I saw you shouldn't, I'll yelled NO! I've made him smell his business, nothing helps! I can't take him outside because he's only had his first shot. I really need some help PLEASE! :( or can anyone link me to the best training sites that could possibly help me. You are all such great help! I would not know what I\'d do without you all. |
