Welcome to YT. You have a very beautiful girl, I am sorry she is so sick and has been thru so much. I don't know about popsicles - they are mostly sugar what I suppose. But you can use Pedilyte - not the grape flavored, but any of the others. Did they do a full blood panel on her before the surgery? I just wondered if anything abnormal showed up there. I'll say a prayer for your little one |
We wanted to check in on Violet this morning. How is she doing? You and she are in our prayers! |
Oh, poor Theo. I can't imagine how difficult that must have been. I read your other threads on the little guy, and, for what it's worth, I'd be doing the same thing as you - no more tests! And Gracie, too. I'm sorry she still feels crummy sometimes. Could it be IBD? That's something I have in the back of my mind for Violet, but the vet says it's too early to know. The biopsies they did of Violet's intestines may give us more info, though. But the vet does seem to think she has a virus. They did do a full blood panel on Violet, with nothing out of the ordinary. I haven't had an update from the vet yet this morning. Hopefully soon. I am going to try to go buy some pedialyte this morning. How do you all usually give this to your pups? Mix a little in with water? Or do you give it to them straight? I'd hate to accidentally give her too much (if that's possible). And thank you, TOY, for all the suggestions on treats. And you're not meddling at all re: the wedding. I did ask the vet, but they don't do boarding, unfortunately. I have a friend who was going to take her for the week, and the friend said she doesn't mind taking her post-surgery, but she can't take her if she is still sick from a potential virus, as she has 2 dogs of her own. And I totally understand that - I would never want her dogs to get sick. Unfortunately, I am not only missing my brother's wedding, but my mom's 60th birthday party AND the extended family portrait we got her as a gift, both of which are this weekend. I won't be in the photo, which is upsetting me a lot. But my family has been really great about it - my brother adores Violet and totally understands, though I know he is sad. And his fiancee is possibly the sweetest girl on earth, and she understands, too. I spoke with her last night and I can tell she's not upset with me - she knows it's beyond my control. She and my brother are animal lovers, too, so they know how important Violet is to me. The only person who seems upset is the fiancee's mother, who is a bit controlling and seems more upset than others that I won't be there. Thankfully, I don't have to interact with her more than a couple times a year!! :) That said, I still wish I could be there for all the events of the week. I suppose I'm the most upset of everyone. I was supposed to fly out tomorrow and return next Saturday (the wedding is Friday). Ah well. That's life, I guess. |

Just a thought so you can go to the Wedding... |
I just got home from visiting Violet. She looked awful. She was shaking and then threw up. I feel terrible because she hadn't thrown up all day, but she threw up when I got there. :( She didn't seem happy to see me at all, though the vet told me that earlier she had rolled over for a tummy rub. Which makes me so sad because, normally, she would want a tummy rub from me. I feel like Violet is mad at me or scared of me all of a sudden, because my presence made her shake and vomit. :( I'm sick to my stomach over how upset she was to see me. I got more details from the vet about the condition of Violet's intestines. She said that basically the virus has eaten away at the inner lining of her intestines, which is why she can't keep food down. I asked her if she'd ever seen this before, and she said she's seen similar presentations, but it's very rare. I need to remember to ask her tomorrow how Violet could have possibly gotten this virus. She doesn't spend time with other dogs, and she rarely goes outside (she is pad trained). I just can't fathom how she got so sick. I asked her if the swollen lymph nodes could be at all related to lymphoma, and the vet said it's not impossible, but it's very unlikely. We'll know for sure when the biopsy results come back, but they take 5-7 days. She is going to stay in the hospital until at least tomorrow. I am going back to see her again tonight, and bringing some boiled chicken to see if she'll eat, as she won't eat the dog food they have been offering her. |
Poor baby! I dont think she got upset to see you I just think she is really sick and you came when she was having a bad moment. I will keep Violet in my prayers and I am hoping you get some answers |

I am sorry you and Violet are going through such a difficult time. Don't take it personal....she just does not feel well. She knows you are trying to help her. It sounds like she is being well cared for and I will bet she will be feeling better soon. Maybe try to give her some vanilla yogurt? Mine love it and it is easy to digest. |
I am sure Violet is not mad at you, the poor little girl is just ill and you caught her at a bad time. I that someone suggested yogurt, my puppy loves it. I will keep Violet in my prayers. |
Maybe yogurt is too much for her to handle right now. I know when humans have diarrhea or stomach problems, anything dairy shouldn't be given for a while. I hope your baby is doing well. I'm sure she's not mad at you. She's probably just scared and feeling sick. Hopefully, when you visit her again, she'll be doing better. |
Please don't think Violet is blaming you or unhappy to see you. I'm sure it was all just a coincidence. You know, when you're sick, sometimes it just comes in waves. Unfortunately, you were there when she wasn't feeling as well. Praying they can discover what is really wrong with her, why it happened and treat her accordingly |

Actually, I suggested yogurt because it helps to restore the balance in the gastrointestinal tract and also helps with vomiting and diarrhea. Something else to try: Pumpkin! |
I can't tell you how sorry I am to hear about your little one. We have been through alot medically with Romeo. I do understand what your going through. Be strong. We're praying for you. Romeo and Bella's Mom :aimeeyork |
Good news! When I went to visit Violet this evening, she was EATING!! They are still giving her liquid food down her nasal tube, but they had put a little dog food in with her, some wet prescription food, and she ate it!!! I was so happy to see her eating. And so were the two vet techs taking care of her. After she ate she seemed like maybe she wasn't feeling so great, and she lay down and was shaking a bit. But the fact that she was showing interest in food, and was willing to eat, is a huge improvement. Thanks for the reminder that I shouldn't get upset about Violet's shaking and whatnot. She only shakes when I visit, so I feel badly that I'm stressing her out, but I'm sure it's not because she doesn't want to see her mommy. :) With any luck, Violet will be able to come home tomorrow. I am really hoping the food she ate tonight has stayed down - I need to call before I go to bed and check. I'm so thankful to all of you for your kind words and concern. Thank you!! |
I tend to be somewhat of a Pollyanna but I have a totally different take on her shaking. I think it was because she was so excited to see you! I especially think that's possible since she doesn't do it any other time. Violet just gets so excited and happy that she shakes from the happiness of seeing you. It actually could be the reason! That's my take on it and I'm sticking to it...LOL I sure hope she's better and gets to come home to you soon. (One other word on the yogurt...it contains active bacteria that can be helpful. From what I understand, it's why women are sometimes told to eat it after taking a round of strong antibiotics. I don't think that's a wife's tale since I've had it mentioned by friends in the medical community. Plus, one of my RN friends suggested buttermilk for human upset stomachs. I have no idea at all about buttermilk and dogs so I'm not even suggesting that!) Hopefully, this will be a great weekend for Violet and you. As far as the bride's mother, with any luck you won't even have to interact with her again until there's a baby involved! |
I'm sorry to hear your little one is so sick.:( She is such a cutie!:) I will keep her in my prayers! |
Did your vet check the protein levels, especially the albumin? My ten year old was diagnosed with IBS a couple years ago and then lymphangtasia last August. He had episodes of chronic throwing up, 20-30 times. What happens is their intestines won't allow the protein from the food to be absorbed back into their system. I am not sure if a 5 month old can even get this; however, it’s worth a test. Lots of prayers sent your way! |
I like the theory that she was just so excited to see me. That makes me feel much better. :) And the yogurt sounds interesting... I think Violet may be lactose intolerant, though. She once had a tiny bit of vanilla ice cream that my mom dropped on the floor, and I'm pretty sure it gave her diarrhea. I have never heard of lymphangtasia. There are so many illnesses I've never heard of in our poor yorkies!! But I did some googling and it looks like intestinal biopsies should turn this up. But I am going to ask if they ever tested albumin levels. They did sooo much bloodwork that I could not possibly keep it all straight. They put all of her medical records online, in a "pet portal" so I have access to them all the time, but I'll just ask rather than try to sort through those - they are getting rather voluminous! I am so excited and have my fingers crossed that Violet will be coming home today!!! |
I hope your little Violet gets hope today and is on the road to recovery:thumbup:As for the shaking I would think that she is just getting over excited when she sees you .:animal-pa |

I do hope little Violet can come home today!! |
I didn't know that yogurt doesn't have lactose in it! Learn something new every day. :) I just asked the vet about Violet's albumin levels, which they did test, and they were normal. So that's good news. The vet said that not only did Violet's dinner from last night stay down, but she ate more dog food this morning, and so far so good! I am so excited! Funny how such a little thing like not vomiting has me grinning from ear to ear. Hah. She said that they are no longer feeding her nasally, and that they are going to give her next dose of each medication she is on orally, rather than via injection or IV, so see if she can keep the meds down (she is on an anti-nausea med, 2 antibiotics, and a pain med). If she can keep them down all day, I can pick her up at 8pm! Yay!! The vet also said that Violet has been more perky this morning, and her little tail has been wagging when people go over to visit her. That is the best news of all - I haven't seen her adorable little tail wag in days. :) |
Great news regarding the albumin levels, and I am so glad to hear she is eatting. I hope they can diagnose Violet’s condition and put her on the track to good health, either by medication or diet. However, if you continue to have chronic vomiting issues maybe your vet can give you anti-nausea medication to administer yourself (via needle). When Oscar had his episodes by the time we drove him to the emergency vet, 30-40 minutes had passed - which would mean he vomited 20-30 times. At that point he would then have to be admitted and put in IV. With Oscar his episodes were about every two weeks – so you can imagine the stress on him to be admitted to emergency, as well the cost every time he was admitted. With the needle he would stop vomiting within ten minutes, which meant he only vomited 2-3 times - and spend the rest of the day normally. |
Oh, poor Oscar! Was it difficult to give him injections? Did you have to find a vein and all of that? I don't know if I'd be good at that. But it is something to keep in mind. I certainly hope this won't be a long term problem, but there is always that possibility. |
Try raw foods!! Hi, My name is Vicki and I have a little yorkie who had almost the exact same problems. I believe with all my heart it is all related to the vaccinations. The one thing I did immediately was switch to raw food. I now go to whole foods and mix his food with vegetables...and he never threw up again. That was over a year ago. We have been to every specialist imaginable, ultrasounds, numerous blood tests, and no one has been able to give a complete diagnosis. Switching to raw foods has not been the answer to everything but has certainly helped with the digestive issues. I also sprinkle prozyme at every feeding and feed two or three times a day. I am happy to talk on the phone with you. Hope this helps... |
That is good news! I hope Violet gets to come home today |
The first couple I was scared crazy, however, the needle just goes under the skin not in a vein. By the scruff of the neck is where I would put it - pulling the fur up. It definitely was a god sent that needle, I was really happy when the doctor allowed me to take it home. I would look into home-made cooking as well. I think we could have managed Oscar’s disease if we would have put him on a home-made diet sooner. We only did that 5 weeks before his passing. Carson is on EVO and once he is adjusted to his new home (been here 7 days, and he is a year old) I will most likely change him to home-made. You also must never feed people food (table scraps), their tummies are so sensitive. Funny, I feel like I am going to be a much better puppy parent this time. You learn so much the first time, as well this site is an incredible place for information and support (I only joined after Oscar’s passing). |

Anyway.....as I said, you can Google or ask your vet about yogurt for dogs. I think you will then say that you truly have learned something new today! I also was resistant when I first heard about it, so I did lots of reading prior to trying it. :) |
Here are some YT threads about yogurt. One thing that jumped out at me in them is that you must avoid artificial sweeteners...I would not give them anyway, but thought I should mention it. If you do a search for yogurt on YT you will see many more threads on the topic! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yorkie-health-diet/161611-quick-yogurt-question.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-question.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...85-yogurt.html |
