Emergency spay for Princess!! Princess is gonna be a mommie!! Or so we thought. It has been 41 days since her tie and we really thought puppies. Teets swollen, throwing up 2 weeks after tie, loss of appetite the following week. Her belly started to get rounder about a week ago and she seemed so tired. Like a pregnant mommy. So excited!! But everything changed on Saturday when she started acting bizarre, making wierd hacking noises, abdomen bloating and getting really hard, hacking up hairballs. Then she had gas for about an hour and everything seemed to go back to normal. This happened again sunday, and so, just to be safe (cause I am a worrier) we took her to the vet this morning and they did bloodwork. Now I am having to get her spayed, instead of having puppies, because he doesnt see them on xray, but white blood cell count is up. She really has all signs of pyometra, except fever. I wish we would have seen this coming. I am devastated. I just want my girl to be ok now.:cry2: |
Oh how sad. I hope she is going to be alright. I will keep her and you in my prayers. |
Hope Princess is feeling better. Glad there is no fever. Keep us posted. |
oh girl sending prayers for your Princess, I am so sorry... hugs, cArmen in nj |
Oh wow!! I just got back from vets office (we were gonna discuss his findings and schedule spay for tomorrow) and I was just so unsure about it he offered to do an ultrasound for free just to ease my mind and show that there werent any puppies. Guess what? There are puppies!!!! And we saw at least one heart beating really strong!! :jump28ib::jump28ib:I dont know how many cuz she kept squirming, but there is no way I am allowing her to be spayed now! He did give her an antibiotic for the vaginal discharge, and he wants to see her again next week, but wow, I am gonna be a gramma! I am so happy my heart is jumpin...what a roller coaster of a day! Thanks for all the well wishes, I really appreciate them. BTW, as soon as pups are weaned, she is getting spayed. This is too nerve wracking;) |
What a heart and mood lifting thing to have happen. Congrats Gramma! |
OH wow! Such a little miracle!! Please, PLEASE! Keep us posted! K |
Congratulations! What great news! We wanna see pics when the babies are born. :) |
I wanna post pics of Princess so bad, let alone the pups...I need a new camera (or computer) this one wont take the sim card from my phone and I dont have any idea how to upload, maybe hubby can figure it out. Sure would like to have an avatar!! But Im just happy to know I still get to have puppies! Yay!:cheer: |
So does this mean she doesn't have pyometra? Why are her white blood cells up? Is that common during pregnancy? If not are the puppies in any danger? I know I know more to worry about. |
not really sure about the pyometra...doc not happy about white blood count being up, although it isnt off the charts it is elevated more than he said he would like. But she also has a real dry nose (nose is always dry tho) with crusty boogers (ewww) and vaginal disharge so maybe that is why. He took her off the amoxicillon from last wk and put her on clavimox which is like augmentin i guess and wants to see her back monday (gulp.<pulling out empty pockets>) I will know more then, but for now I am just treating her like a pregnant mommie and making sure she eats and gets some exercise. I will let God take care of the rest. |
Keep up the good work! |

Let us know what they say and keep us informed. I want that baby of yours and her puppies to be alright! Still praying. |
Okay heres an update..I took her in to vet and we verified there are definitely pups and at least one strong heartbeat. So I am not gonna spay. I will try to let them go to term. However, I did go to the breeder section, and Ellie May has been very kind to explain about pyometra and that yes, you can have both pyometra and pregnancy at the same time. So this can get very bad at any time. Since she does have a yellowish greenish discharge, which is not a good sign, doc put her on clavomax (antibiotic) and wants to see her monday for a recheck. Dont know if he will want another ultrasound. But even if not, we will be doing one, at least at day 58 just so I can see if we need c-section or not. You can also tell if there is pyometra from the ultrasound. If there is, we will defintely do c-sec. Although Ellie May said she doubts Princess could carry to term with Pyo. So this is hanging in the balance. Now I really want her to go to term, because I dont believe in taking a life that can be saved, even a dog, however, if it is going to be at the risk of losing my girl, I will have to choose my girl. She is my heart. And then I will for sure get her spayed, because this is too risky. I think a lot of people would have had her spayed by now. But I just couldnt after seeing that little heartbeat. So I will pray. Thanks for everything, you guys are awesome! :big_hug: |
God bless you! |
Update on Princess, we are gonna have puppies and doc says to try to let her deliver, he has had her on antibiotics and says she looks fine. Probably just a minor infection. I will still keep a watchful eye for anything to go awry and warned him of my two am phone call should I get anxious. He said that is fine, and told me to relax or I would never get through my own skin baby having kids, lol! :D I laughed, but I think he is right. We are at 60 dys today, and she is starting to tear things up and looking all over the house in little dark corners, but she does have a whelping box set up and I find her in there a lot too, so I think she will end up in there when it is time. The annoying thing is that her potty habits have gone down the toilet (pardon the pun) for some reason the last two days. My bedroom smells like a urinal, I dont know why she is refusing to go outside. Oh well, is life ever perfect? <sigh> |

this is a hard situation because the vet can't tell you if it is pyo, metritis or whatever else. The whole thing seems kinda unique or strange. |
When he had the ultrasound on her last week (again, I have made him do two of them!) we saw two heartbeats, and they were strong, but she wiggles a lot and it was hard to see anything, he said if she had pyometra the puppies wouldnt be doing so well and growing. We did the xray on monday, and saw four heads and spines and they all looked about the same size, so he thinks she is gonna be okay to deliver. I am taking him at his word, and preparing him for my two am phone call, lol. I just hope I dont screw this whole thing up, I know they will be little muttlets, but I want them healthy, and my baby, too. Thanks, EllieMay, it is great to talk to someone who knows more than me! |
So are we on puppy watch? OK so SOON! |
yes, puppy watch!!!! I should post in another thread now? |

Sorry, puppy watch over! It all happened within an hour and a half, but now she will have nothing to do with babies, growls and nips at them, and me for trying to put her back in box with them. She had last one this morning at 10:15, four of them, all girls. I dont know how to post pics, but I will ask hubby to do it for me, lol. But it looks like I am gonna have to feed them myself. Rats. I did post in breeder section this morning about it. They said get some doggie nerve pills and that may calm her down, she is probably traumatized from the delivery. |
Congratulations on the new puppies! :) |
but wait...theres more...too tired to type now, but if you go to the thread titled mama wont feed her babies (I cant remember the exact title) I posted today, you'll get the play by play. We had a surprise. :D |
