TOBY-UPDATE 2/19/9 7:30pm Hello everyone--sorry I have not been able to post..it has been a rough few days. Thank you to all of you for your thoughts and prayers..they are keeping me going... TUES-We went to visit him at the ER vet after work. He did nothing but bark...bark...bark...I was told he was "neurologically inappropriate". It was very distressing to see him this way. He did begin to accept more nutrition by syringe--and lick/swallow which was a great sign. He was also wagging his tail for the first time since last Friday. WED-I picked him up for the ER Vet. His discharge papers indicate that this entire thing is due to hypoxia and/or possibly hydrocephalus. His BAT was negative. I think these are all issues related to the hypoxia when my vet was trying to revive him. However, all of the vets seem to feel that he has a very good chance of recovering, even regaining his vision. They simply do not know how long the recovery will take or how much brain damage he will have. He barked, cried, howled and was curling his spine the opposite way from the norm. He could not use any of his legs and he had uncontrolled bowel movements. My other furbaby, a Toy Fox Terrier, howled along with my TOBY. The two of the them howling together was terrible! My husband was very upset..said I was cruel for allowing TOBY to suffer this way. (There is a reason that Men can not carry babies!) I have been reassured by all the VETs that have examined TOBY-that he is not in any pain, although he does seem to be in pain. I finally took him to my regular vet around 3pm. I had a long talk with him, and he is going to keep him until he has shown more progress. I was so upset that I came home and went to sleep early. I am simply heart-broken-and the reminders of my TOBY are everywhere in my home. I miss him so.... THURS-I spoke to my regular vet. He reports that TOBY is still unable to stand or walk, however, he is using his front legs to make it to the water...and tolerated food well today. I am told that all of these signs are progress...I plan to visit him tomorrow morning. Again, thank you to all of you--lessons learned from all of this? NEVER spay/neuter a furbaby before 6 months of age AND make sure the anesthesia is one of the safer "gas" form when the spay/neuter is done. :( |
Thank you for updating us. We have been so worried. Little Toby has his whole YT family pulling for him. :big_hug: |

Update 3-2-9 Hello everyone, -Sorry I have not been able to post. It has been very hectic at my house. I was fully expecting to have to make a tough decision last Thursday. It turns out that I went in to see my little TOBY, and found that his back paws were no longer rigid and he was trying very hard to stand up. Also I was approached by one of my family VETs that one of his students had been working with him. She discussed the possibility of taking TOBY to hydrotherapy and asked the vet to tell me that she would be happy to adopt him if I feel that I cannot take care of him. (Somehow I would have liked the message to have been that she would like to discuss TOBY with me-and offer to help him but not keep him....I would have been happy to discuss some reimbursement for her time-and my TOBY might possibly recovered quicker.) -I decided to pick him up on FRIDAY. I bought him a small life jacket and tried the hydrotherapy at home. He did try to paddle, but not too much. Th life jacket is huge on him (he weighs about 2.5 lbs)He is better and seems more aware of his surroundings. He is eating better (although still AD food) and passing bowels/uirine. He seems to equally frustrated with trying to "go" and "walk". He basically needs a bath everytime he "goes" or eats. He seems to pant frequently, not sure why. Lastnight he whimpered all night. I literally spent the entire weekend with him--carrying, feeding, bathing, washing his linens...I was not able to get anything else done. -I thought I could get a professional to start the hydrotherapy to get him started. Sadly, I have not found anyone with the equipment for such a small puppy or the fees are too high ($100 per session). I do not expect anything free, but at least reasonable. I want to save this furbaby, but we are in a recession and I do have a family to consider as well. -I am trying so hard to help him recover and give him every benefit. Let's see if there are any improvements for the next 10 days or so. Again, thank you for all of your prayers, thoughts, and insight. It is definitely keeping me going.-Betty |

Turbo Spa Massagers Do you think that might work for Toby? You could purchase one for the cost of one treatment. Bless your heart for trying to help him recover. :big_hug: |
Sending prayers and positive thoughts your way. |
Thanks for the update, I know alot of people have been praying for your family and Toby. You are so dedicated, I hope he continues to improve. Sending BIG Hugs! |
You and Toby are in my thoughts and prayers. I have a puppy going in for liver shunt surgery on Wednesday, and I now will be asking plenty of questions re anesthesia before then. The way we found out he has a liver shunt was his high BAT results that came back just before he was to be neutered. If my vet hadn't thought to run that test at the last minute, the results could've been disastrous. Again, best of luck for Toby to make a speedy recovery. He is so lucky to have you for a mommy. |
I am so....sorry that you and Toby had to go through this:( Sending Prayer's your way:hands::hands:for a speedy recovery!!! |
Thanks for the update, I hope Toby continues to make a great recovery. |
I just read this thread. I pray that Toby will recover fast. He is a real fighter. I am sure he will recover. |
TOBY update 3/11/9 Hi everyone! I have great news. drum roll please*****TOBY has begun to walk******. He began by simply getting up, and now he is walking. He walks with some difficulty, nonetheless, I am thrilled. He is eating well and tolerating soft food. the hydrotherapy in the bathrub seems to have helped him sith his legs. I am still not sure if he can hear, and I suspect that he may have regained some vision, but I am not sure. We have even heard him bark a couple of times in the last week. He also likes to be out of his exerciser and walk on the grass. He is still a little thinner than he should be, but I am sure that I can get the weight on him in time. Over the weekend, he even began cuddling with me in my bed as he did before this accident. My vets are very happy that he is doing so well and they think this recovery is quicker than they originally thought it might be. I am trying to be realistic, but I am so happy my baby is doing so well. It really has been a rough few weeks...and I could not have done it without all of the support from all of you at YORKIETALK...you have all been great...I will continue to post updates but I always want to be sure to thank all of you! betty Ps I am going to try to post some videos/pictures asap...as soon as I have a little bit of extra time! :) |
How did your furbaby do with his LS surgery today? I am so glad that your baby had testing! My thoughts and prayers are with you...keep us posted! |
