We have an x-pen set up in the garage with some washable pee pads in it. We "go out" when it is cold... but only to the x-pen. They don't have a problem with it at all. |

It's been very cold here also, not as much snow as you, but low temps & below zero windchills. Mine will go out, but can't bear the cold for to long. My oldest, Lucky, knows what to do, does it, and will come back in. But I watch Halle & Toby like a hawk. I've seen them run like the wind to the back of the yard, then actually have to stop before they get back to the door cuz they are so cold & I have to go get them. Thier little paws probably DO get painfully cold. Scares me so much that I don't let them out much in this weather anymore. They are pretty well potty pad trained so it's not too much of a problem to have them go in the house. Yea, spring can get here anytime! |
We can soooo feeel your pain!! It was -24 yesterday morning without the windchill. My three younger ones are all dual trained (litterbox and outside) but they decided when it started getting real cold that they didn't want to use the litterbox and prefer to go outside!! Crazy??? Any way, to help with the frozen paws, I put a thin layer of vaseline on the bottom of their pads so they don't have the limping problem, but then again, none of them takes very long to find their spot when it is this cold. Just have a washcloth ready to wipe it off when we come back in. |
The last couple days here it was -40* when I took the kids to school. Isla will run out the door to pee and hurry to come back in but won't take the time to poop. So if she doesn't go when she wakes up then I know it's down in the basement somewhere. She hadn't pooped in the house till it got really cold. My guess is that once it's warmer she won't have this problem anymore cause she really likes to be outside. Even if it's 20 above she'll stay outside more often. I guess I'm just glad that she'll at least pee outside. If I had to choose I'd rather pick up a tootsie roll than pull out the carpet cleaner for pee. |

Sorry, when I said frozen paws, I was using a figure of speech, because unless they are out there a long time, their paws/ pads or other body parts don't actually freeze :) When they bring up a paw or leg limping when it is so cold out, it is either from ice crystals forming in between their paws/pads or else that burning painful sensation from the extreme cold of the snow. Try rubbing some vaseline on the back of your hand, then lay it on the snow. Now do that with the opposite hand, without vaseline. You'll know what I mean then :) (I'm not joking, I've done it myself) There is also a product made to protect their pads, can't remember the name of it, try google maybe. It protects and shields them from ice forming, and road salt damage and dryness. |
