lameness in puppy-urgent My 4 month old male has terrible lameness in his back legs. Some days he can only drag his back end around. We thought he had swimmers leg because the other pups in litter were walking fine right when they were supposed to. But this gets a little better than he gets really bad again. The vet gave us steroids but I dont see any difference. Can anyone help us please??? oh he also shivers alot when his lameness is at its worst. |

OMG. I am so sorry!! Did the vet take any X-Rays? Did they show anything? I would definately get a second opinion. It sounds like he is in pain when he shivers. Bless your little hearts!!! I am praying for you!!! |
Have you had x-rays done to see if there is a problem? |
He isnt in pain. No, they have not taken xrays. Checked that he has feeling and no pain. |
Please take him to have X-rays done on his legs and especially his hips. I can't believe your vet didn't do this already, that really concerns me. |
Check for lime disease. We had a standard poodle who had a similar problem. He would get almost paralyzed in his back legs and the vet would give him steroids. It would fix it for awhile, then get bad again. So the vet increased his dosage. He'd get better, then bad again. Eventually we had to have him euthanasized because it was never ending. It was absolutely horrible. Well, we found out later from another vet that this is signs of lime disease (which is curable!!!) Since lime disease isn't common in our area, our vet didn't look into it. I'm still very bitter about this. I don't care where you are located as a vet, you should know the symptoms of diseases or look it up! We realized later that the vet never took his temperature either. Have you checked his temp? Another symptom of lime disease is high temp. |
I agree I would take him as soon as possible to have x-rays done...he could have leg perthes really bad....and an x-ray will help determine that... If you have an orthopedic specialist in your area I would even consider taking your pup to them.... |
Had xrays done and nothing, though we have noted he has very large knees. Will call and ask Vet about Lyme disease. Thank you all. |
Because he is only 4 months and this is accompanied by shaking, I would be very concerned that these are neurological symptoms (possibly liver shunt). Please get him to the vet today and talk to them about running a bile acid test. Another possibility is that he is shaking because the leg issue is causing pain. How is his appetite? When you touch the leg, is he is pain? |
HIs appetite is awesome and no apparent pain anywhere. I will call vet about liver shunt. Thank you will keep all posted. |
I looked up symptoms of liver shunt and he dosent have any. Will be testing him for lyme. any other thoughts on this would be appreciated. |
Has the vet given you an exercises to help improve with his strength? I know that doesn't get to the root of the problem and chills etc, but it will keep him from getting too deconditioned. There was a thread a while ago about a swimmer puppy that someone posted about exercises on. I will look for it. It can't hurt just to start working on improving his range of motion and holding him up and having him bear increasingly more weight on the legs for longer periods of time... |
HI I have a little yorkie Hailey she is 6months,I saved her from a breeder she dragged her back legs,i got her at 3 months I took her to a surgeon who thought it was her spine, after that visit she started getting up on all four legs,so i decided to take her to therapy i had her xrayed and there was no sign of problems,The vet noticed she had tight mussels from dragging her legs so we did laser and swimming which helpped she stiil has a funny walk but has no problem getting around i find her knees seem large, maybe you should try some therapy.i call hailey my little miracle because she probably would have been put down, now she running aroun d:)good luck |

This doesn't happen about two hours after he eats, right? It could be Lyme's, so that is something to test for but I think I'd let the vet do a full work-up. When did this start? If your pup has been doing this since birth, then I would guess it is a developmental problem. |
