Roxy Had Major Dental So Roxy had her dental yesterday. Her Doctor is a Board Cert. Dental Vet - Dr. Carmichael from The Veterinary Medical Center ~ And he was AMAZING  - EXPENSIVE, but Worth it  Roxy had to have her 2 front teeth pulled as they were infected at the root and trying to infect the other teeth near by. She also had to have 2 bottom teeth pulled (the ones in-front of her fangs) as they were in the same situation as the 2 top ones. She had a few baby teeth remaining that were pulled. And finally her side 'chewing' tooth was pulled because it was actually an 'abnormal tooth' - it didn't have a root that went straight to the bone, and she had a HUGE cyst connected to it, so that had to get drained and cleaned out.... My poor baby...she is on antib's and pain meds....:( I also got some insight on dental care. No toothpaste is required, it is only for taste for the dog. The Petz for Life is BS and it contains so much alcohol that our little ones can get drunk - fast....He said dogs have their own powerful enzymes in their mouth that kill bacteria. He is working on a toothpaste though that would actually be beneficial. But in the meantime, DAILY brushing (with just a toothbrush) is the BEST  |
He sounds awesome.:) And are you talking about Petzlife? I sooooo have to agree and that confirms what I thought. It may (or may not) help some dogs but the alcohol is waaaaaay too high on the list and it isn't good. I had heard that all that is necessary is a toothbrush but I like the smell of Ellie's toothpaste and it does have enzymes in it that probably do help, so I use that and then OraVet. At the very least, Ellie likes the flavor and I feel like I'm doing something when I brush if I use paste.:p I also floss Ellie's teeth now. How did Roxy do going under? Was this the only oral surgery required? |

And yeah I am not using that Petz 4 life anymore  hmmm...more dental, well if I continue with my DAILY tooth brushing (she actually gets her teeth brush after both meals), then she could just be good for a years professional cleaning, and to make sure nothing else funny is going on). It is going to be a day by day thing, I don't she is in the clear, but she is good for now  He is very confident that it all went well and was VERY happy that we proceeded...he did mention something about the cyst and cancer, I guess if it went unseen it could turn bad :( |

I spent $25 on Petzlife and it is just sitting here.:mad::mad: That much alcohol can't be okay for a small dog. If you look on their site all they say is no side effects have been reported. Not everyone reports illness in relation to a product to the company though.:mad: Thankfully I only used it a few times. And then CET (I really do like this company though) puts xyilitol in one of their products. What are these companies trying to do??? |
Hope Roxy feels better soon :(. How wonderful of you to get all this work done for her :). Did you guys see these brushless thingys: BREATH-LESS Brushless Toothpaste, Ark Naturals Natural Products For Pets Here are the ingredients, what do you think? I told him I use CET and he didn't have anything great to say about that either, that's when he said Dogs have their 'own - better' enzymes in their mouth. He told me he is creating a toothpaste that would actually 'aid' the dogs enzymes, but for now, there's nothing really out there that 'all that wonderful' he said you just can't beat daily brushing ;) |

I just don't use chews of any kind right now though. Whether it is that I don't trust the company, the ingredients are nothing but fillers or too high in protein for Ellie, quality control is questionable or choking concerns there is always a reason for us not to. |
Hope Roxy is feeling better! I always hate going to the dentist! |

The Dentist I went to was one of a very few bunch of Board Certified Dental Vets in the Nation. His father is from Cornell and his father created the vaccine for canine parvovirus. Dr. Carmichael has a tremendous amount of credentials, and the toothpaste he is 'trying' to create is something that would 'actually' be benefical and help and aid and have results. He said in the meantime, he hasn't 'found' anything out on the market that does that. I do not think he is only in it for the money.... I honestly do not have the time or desire to research Petzlife - feel free to do that yourself. If you really like the GSE - you can buy it at the vitamin store. I just don't see the need to be giving my dogs alcohol, I have no idea what dental properties it could possibly have... I gave that link to Dr. Carmichael as you suggested he may be in it for the money. I disagree, as I think who he is, is impressive and I think he credential are outstanding. "if and when" he does create a toothpaste, I will let everyone know about it. And people can pick and choose to use and do whatever they want. |
