Liver enzymes elevated? Rockies sick Took rocky to the vet he had blood work and his liver enzymes are elevated Vet wants to do more tests anyone have and knowledge regarding this matter? He is 4 years old. |

Was it the ALT? What was the number and why was the test done? |
Rocky's sick Rocky started sneezing, water eyes, lethargic, loss of appetite, vomiting his neck was very tender and he would cry out loud if you turned it. Took him to the vet who did blood work, wbc-18.09, alb-2.2, alp-481,alt-635. Vet put him on antibiotics and sulcrafate for the vomiting. Want to do exten$ive testing on liver, xrays, liver sonogram and battery of tests. He is 4 yrs old and otherwise was healthy until this. Could this be some kind of serious liver disease? Someone mentioned liver shunt or mvd. I am a new dog owner have had him since march previous owner was elderly and couldn't care for him any longer. He is a very nice little dog, well behaved, kind of timid. :confused: |
Did the vet do a bile acid test on him? If he in concerned about his liver functioning this is the test to have done to check his liver functioning... I would have this done before x-rays etc..and a normal x-ray does not show anything for liver function....he would need a special one done that shows blood flow through the liver... In order to know how high those levels are we need the reference range..some labs give different figures...according to my labs his albium is low and his ALT is extrememly high which is what the vet was looking at and thinking of the liver... I would have a bile levels test done (IMO) if the dog is showing signs of being lethargic, not wanting to eat (fussy), staring, vomiting etc... and has a high ALT level... and then go from there...sometimes dogs with a hig ALT do not have high bile levels... |
With his neck being tender is that something with liver disease or an infection in the spinal column and how likely is an infection in the brain or cerebral spinal fluid in a yorkie? One of the first things you think about if a neck is tender and can't turn with out pain in a human is encepalopathy or spinal meningitis something like that. His WBC's are elevated also. Indicating an infection. I know I would be concerned and worried. I know this is not much help but given you more to worry about. I'll have your little one in my prayers. |

Please do as much research as possible on liver disease. Did he eat anything he wasn't supposed to...poisonous plant, rat poison, etc? If not, then liver disease may be a possibility...Those numbers are off. The ALB seems low and the others seem quite high...Those numbers definitely point to a problem in the liver. Proper diet and supplements are very important when dealing with liver problems and can help your baby get better. The vomiting is likely due to his liver having problems whether it's due to a toxin that may have been introduced to his system or liver shunt or mvd or liver disease. If this were my dog, I would take him off of regular dog food if it contains red meat or exotic meats...Red meat produces the most toxins which is usually filtered by the liver, but obviously your baby is having problems so the liver is probably not able filter properly. Do a search on yahoo groups for a group called Dog Liver Disease and join. They will be able to help. Prayers for your baby. |
