What is the best thing to give my baby when she is having a seizure? Ok, it's been a year since the last time we had any babies that seized. Has anything new come up? This baby is 9 weeks old and had a bad seizure about 4 days ago. We nearly lost her, I thot she had died at one point. She recovered but today we had to go out and I should have given her some Dyne before we left but she was acting just fine. We got back after about 2 hours to find her passed out on the floor. Barely responsive. I have given her Dyne and then puppy milk with baby rice. She threw it up. I have boiled chicken sitting here waiting for her but she shows a decided lack of interest. I have given her more Dyne but she is just not responding. I have some Resperam but she is breathing ok. I don't think she needs it at all. Any suggestions? I won't take her to the vet when I can do the same thing for her here at home. If I had taken her to the vet the last time she would be dead now. Thanks for any help you can give. Sylvia Anyone know how often Dyne or Nutri-Cal can be given in a situation like this? |

Does your little one have low blood sugar levels? At 9 weeks it could be. Sounds like you had a bad experience with your vet. Do you have another vet you can take her too? http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/new...eply&p=2055299 |
I don't have any advice, but wanted to say I'll pray for your baby to be healthy and begin to thrive! Hugs to you! What a worry this is for you. |

You know when they take your baby in the back room, they do whatever they can and go onto the next animal. Here at home, she is our only concern. We have her in our hands and won't let her go without a fight. When she is all alone in that back room and no one is touching her except to treat her, how does she know anyone loves her? At the vets office, will they let you go in back with your baby? I have not visited one vet that allows us into the back with our baby. I do know of someone who's vet does allow this, but like I said, I haven't met one. And I understand this. They don't want you in the way if there is anything that needs to be done suddenly. That doesn't mean I have to like it or really agree to it. By the way, I do not feel the same way about human doctors. Probably because people and children can talk. Thru all of this, I have learned something. I need a wind up alarm clock and note pad right at hand when this happens. I need to be able to tell how long since the last seizure and dose of sugar were. I called my vet during office hours and asked how often I can give Dyne or Nutri-Cal. What I got was, "If you give 5ml and it doesn't help within 30-45 minutes, you probably need to look into another option." I swear, I am going to take some vet classes, just so I can treat my own dogs! Sylvia |
I think the reason your vet may have said that is because if your dog does not get better within that amount of time, then Nutri-cal is probably not going to help. If this is the case, it's very possible that your baby may have a different problem. Make sure to log when your baby has seizures. Does it happen after meals or when? |

Right now, I am force feeding Taboo cause she is not eating enough to keep her energy up. I am limiting her activity so she is not using up any extra energy. We have tried everything that has worked in the past, liver (raw & boiled), canned dog food, hot dogs, bologna, KFC chicken, boiled chicken, braunswagger, hamburger, steak, anything we can think of, heated and cold! If I keep a close watch on her, feeding her every 3-4 hours, she is fine. It just wears all of us out. None of my dogs have liver problems (knock on wood), so that hasn't been the problem. I love the Dyne because it has egg white in it, where the Nutri-Cal and Nutri-Stat don't. Most of the vitamins are the same but I can't tell about the amounts because the Nutri-Cal and Nutri-Stat serving is per teaspoon while the Dyne measures by ounce. All I do know is that my dogs respond better to the Dyne than to Nutri-Cal or Nutri-Stat. I overdosed Lily with Nutri-Cal when she came down with the low blood sugar over a year ago (she was the first one) but so far (knock on wood), I have not overdosed any of the others with Dyne. |
