Yorkie falls off recliner I want to tell you what happened to a poor Yorkie. My next door neighbor works as a vet assistant at the local vet's office. Yesterday a lady brought a four year old Yorkie in who had fallen off the back of a recliner. The dog always sat up on the recliner and somehow it became startled and fell off onto the hardwood floor. It hit it's head and had a seizure, then it froze into a wierd position with it's head cocked to the side and legs straight out. Anyway, the vet was closed at the time and the lady waited till the next morning to call the vet. By the time she brought it to the vet it was too late, the dog suffered brain damage from the swelling. The vet gave the dog some real expensive medicine at no charge to try and save it, but it was too late. The lady said just put it to sleep and walked out. The vet said if she would have taken it to the 24 hour emergency animal clinic nearby it could have been administered medicine to reduce swelling on the brain, and the animal would have probably been ok. I don't know if the lady financially couldn't afford it or what she was thinking. Anyway, be CAREFUL if your Yorkie sleeps on the backs of furniture.:( |
You know this is real good information.......My Maddie always climbs on the top of our sofa (which is not against the wall) and she lays there but everytime I catch her I tell her to get down and usually Bailey follows right with where so they are both balancing themselves on the top of my sofa which they can both fall and hit the floor......I will make sure I tell my husband again to don't let them (Maddie in particular, because Bailey never gets up there unless Maddie is up there) but to tell him to don't let them do this...... |
Oh, how terribly sad! Breaks my heart, especially to think that the lady didn't bother to take it to an emergency clinic and then coldly walked out while her animal was put to sleep. Logan is not afraid to climb, so we are always having to keep a close eye on him. He can jump on the back of the couch in a flash. This story will help keep me vigilant. |
Oh... how sad.... My little Cordy will climb up me to get on the back of the chair, but he doesn't do it on his own. I couldn't bear the thought of something happening to my little guy..... |
When I got my yorkie and took him to the vet to get a health check, the vet told me no recliners, and no sectionals. Because in the past couple of months yorkies have come in seriously injured because they have gotten trapped in a sectional sofa, or trapped under a recliner because the owner didn't know that it was under there when they went to put the leg rest up or down. While I don't have a recliner, I did have a rocking type chair (like a recliner without the leg rest) and as soon as we got home with the puppy, It went out to the dumpster. My boyfriend was pretty pissed but since my puppy only weighs 2.1lbs I didn't want to take any chances. |
