Hives are back...
 

:(:confused:so bella got the shot of steroids Monday at about 2:30. Her hives went away and she was fine then last night her hives came BACK!!!! Im so upset. I gave her benedryl and she slept well but i dont like giving meds a lot. So my question is, is it normal for hives to need more that one treatment of steroids to go away completely?? they are mainly in her ears, and her front and back leg pits. Classic areas for a contact hive to appear...no trouble breathing and she is eating playing drinking etc. Diggy also had hive and when he got his shot they went away and have stayed away. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Oh Paula I am so sorry to see this. Poor baby. Sure hives appear in any
warm spot on the body and can drive you bonker's from itching.
I have no more idea's as to why the keep appearing. I wish I could be
of more help. There has to be something, inside or out that is causing this.
Any new budding trees or flower's in your yard or area. I do know that
hives in humans can be related to stress. Are they under any kind of stress?
Strange that both have gotten them. I do wish I could be of more help
I can just imagine how anxious you must be to get to the bottom of this
problem. Hang in there.

Paula - sorry Bella is back to itching. Poor baby. Did she roll around in the fleece after you washed it? Sometimes the chemicals don't completely wash out.

I haven't experienced doggie hives, but in the human variety they definitely can take more than one treatment to clear up.

Oh Bella Bean has the itchies again :( I'm still wondering if it's perhaps something outside she's getting into. What did the vet say?

Poor baby. I have Cali on her secnd round of steroids/antibiotics for her dermatitis, bumps under her skin and as soon as I start to wean her off the steroids she starts itching so the steroids don't cure the problem they just make them more comfortable. Like you we cannot figure out what is causing the itching. Good luck

Aww poor baby, I hope you get to the root of this.

spoke with the vet...they said they are putting her on the pill form steroids for 6 days ...if then they come back they want to see her again. Im so sad....

Jodie, Nope I washed the fleece and kept it in the basement away form her just to be safe....so that's not it. uggg SO CONFUSED!!!

Its not like Bella is completely miserable, but im afraid of it turning that way!! When i give her benedryl it knocks the itching right out for her...but still I dont like pumping them with meds all the time I wanna get to the root of it. So we will start the pills this afternoon and go from there. I am kinda relieved to hear that one treatment doesnt always knock them out...cuz the thought of whatever she is reacting too still laying around the house bothers me. Im hoping she isnt re-exposed and this is really the first exposure reaction still. Hope that made sense. thanks for your thoughts


and Patti sounds like your in the same boat as me....bring your baby over and we can sit and stare at them all night together...Lord knows I cannot rest well knowing she isnt 100%!!! I lay there staring at her making sure her breathing isnt affected. Hope your baby gets better too.

I know this is random but have you started wearing a new perfume or lotion? Or have u started using a new freshener spray like febreze or something? This allergy might be environmental. Are they doing any new construction around ur house? Get an allergy test done at the vet and tell thm to rush asap... hope it works...

I worked in an allergist office for 10 years. Generally when a cause of hives can be determined...it is an allergic reaction to something ingested. Either eaten or a reaction to medicine. Unfortunately, 80% of hives are idiopathic...you will never know what caused them. They can be gone in the morning...come back in the afternoon. Scratching will just bring more hives.

Benadryl helps with the swelling and itching. Steriods work in the short term, but they are not a cure. There is no cure for hives.

Okay so this can still be the initial reaction just coming back or more present? Thats what i worried about, if she is being re-exposed to the unknown allergen and its right before my face but cannot see it! See i have a lil boy yorkie too who reacted almost 12 hours before her same size and look of hives same day thats why i figured it was something they BOTH came in contact with for them both to react in the same day hours apart. No, not re-exposed...the hives have just re-occurred. Hives do that. It takes some people longer than others. The medical community doesn't completely understand hives. It is one of few conditions that can manifest and recitfy itself..within hours and then re-appear.

Since both of them are affected...think carefully what both of them did that day..anything they may have possibly eaten, any flea treatments, heartworm meds?

And honestly you may never know...but it is strange both of them have them.

Added anything new in your treats?

Ok to my best ability here is EVERYTHING we did that day

I didnt change laundry soap or clearners or anything of the obvious nature

No heartworm flea meds or and meds for that matter

I DID go to a new joann fabric and get fleece. they played and rubbed ALL over it and broke out 4 hours later ...well my male Diggy did not Bella she broke out about 20 hours after exposure to it. She has full coat his is short so easier to get to his skin ?

I have brought TONS of fleece thru the house and they always romp and play on it and I only purchase from Joann's but this was a different store??

I since have washed every piece of fleece is hot water 2 times each with my usual tide laundry soap.

Our Oak tree also is dropping the catkins it drops every year which is a strand of dead flowers they cover my yard and the run thru those but i pick them off when i see them right away. Seemed strange they would have same exact reaction in 24 hours to a seasonal allergy? he is 1 year 2 month she is 2 years 11 months

have u done and environmental allergy test??? They maybe allergic to something in the environment. My friends American Mastiff got like this out of the blue and since she is vet tech she got a food and environmental test done. She is practically allergic to everything. And now she gets a daily allergy shot every night before bed... Thats how bad the allergies are... I suggest you get it done...

well i questioned that route also but all 3 vets i have seen said not likey a environmental thing being i have 2 yorkies reacting the same exact way within 24 hours. They said seasonal allergies in 2 different dogs would react differently....and likey at different times. I use no yard chemicals and have no new plants they are around. They also said environmental allergies act a lil differently as both my dogs have hives in their pits of knees and arms...which she said is classic contact allergy reaction. So yes, i am pursuing all avenues but 3 different vets are steering me away from seasonal. If i dont get this under control soon i will definately pursuit environmental.

If the only common denominator is the fleece...could've been treated with something, a different type dye used, different fabric blend.

I keep trying to think of something that would cause the exact same reaction in two different animals. Have any vines in the yard? Poison ivy...poison oak? Even if you think you do not...it's a possiblity if they were outside somewhere together. I don't see it in my yard either, but sometimes doing yardwork...my husband manages to find the one vine.

I don't think both would have the identical reaction to the oak tree string things. We have those....I hate them.

We used to advise benadryl and oatmeal baths as a treatment when it was impossible to determine the cause. The oatmeal bath is exactly what it sounds like....warm water with uncooked oatmeal in it. I don't know how effective it would be for a yorkie...and can't imagine the "fun" it would be to comb out her hair.

I really think hers are just taking longer to go away completely.

Is she eating anything Beef ?? Brownie get's hive's from beef They were even up his neck.
Right now my boy's are suffering from the pollen & grass so there coughing & itching.

I hope it is just taking longer and im not rexposing her to it ....there is just nothing new besides those 2 things! Im picky about cleaners I never switch...and i realize they can develop new allergies at any time but what are the odds of 2 developing a new allergy the same day??? Just does not make sense to me. Poison Ivy is a possibility...i dont see any but i know it can be tricky. Yeah maybe with smmer coming they treated the fleece with a bug spray ??? I know bugs love to burrow in fabric....Im hoping these pills i pick up today clear things up and i never see hives on her again!!!!!

yes they eat beef and chicken...but not friday or saturday...and i could see it being a food allergy if 1 was reacting but 2??? and within 12 hours ??? Thats whats throwing me a bit here they came on so strong and so abruptly in both...just odd. thanks for all trying to help it means a lot. and helps :)

Oh yeah i had a fleece washing fest at my house. Every piece gets washed 2 times on HOT HOT HOT cycle with Tide and now I still worry about letting them touch it. Do you think 2 hot wash cycles will get off what needs to be gotten off?

I saw the pic of hives on the other thread. Baby Chloe had 2 on her chest/belly. They looked just like the pic. She got them after laying on cement. She went swimming and then layed in the sun to dry. The cement was wet. The hives went away after a few days. It seems like she had a reaction to the concrete. The cement was also very hot, so I put a towel down for her, but she prefered the cement.Hope this might help your babies!

awww sweet of you to help!!!! Im afridd Miss Priss Bella would not lay on cement....:p when we are outside she lays on the patio table (yes where we EAT and cookout) she is such a brat lol but good thing to know that cement has caused this also!! Thanks!!!!!

Okay and Update on Bella. She started her pill form prednisone yesterday, she did well on it. Her hives were back in full force yesterday and last night but didnt seem to itch as much just very noticable and blotchy everywhere. So she got her pill at 8 and benadryl at 10 so she got a good nights sleep and all is well. I hope these hives go away soon and we do not have to deal with them again! I will keep updating this so encase any one else's baby gets hives you can maybe refer to this and other stories and get some help!!

Oh Paula -- I am so sorry that precious Bella is still having problems. I don't have any experience with the evill hives, but I do have experience with Prednisone. My first Yorkie, LacieBug was on a low dose of Prednisone for over five years to control brain swelling -- she had a very rare brain disease that caused swelling in the lining of the brain.

I know how worried you are about Bella and how much you hate giving drugs. I just wanted to let you know that the drug worked well for us with few side affects (or is that effects?).
