How do you get a urine sample? I think Bailey has a UTI. I am trying to get a sample...ahhh not working too well. She'll stop going if I try to put a cup close to her, I tried putting plastic on top of the pee pad and Angel ran away with it. Any suggestions? Can dogs have cranberry juice? |
Ugh, I spent a week trying to get a sample from Jack. I chased him around with a long-handled ladle. I finally realized that he always peed in the same spot as Eddie, so I just took the two of them out first thing in the morning, waited until Eddie peed and then put the ladle down for Jack. Worked like a charm. Of course, girls don't mark like that. All I can suggest is the ladle. At least you don't have to bend so far down. |
Thanks...at night mine go on pee pads...& when I get close to her while she is going she stops and runs under something or jumps in her bed. Yep, have had to wash blankets today. She is peeing alot, can I just get a sample off the floor? :rolleyes: My floors are pretty clean. |
if you have hard wood floors or linoleum then you can suck it up off the floor with a syringe if you have one. or you can try turning the pee pad over so she goes on the plastic side then you can pick it up and dump it in a little container. be sure to tell the vet where you picked up the urine from so he can ignore some of the bacteria and what not that was picked up with the urine. |
This is really confusing me lately. For the people whose vets want a sample and you are having a hard time getting it, why in the word don't they just do a cystocentesis? It's the best way anyway.:confused: :confused: :confused: I mean, if you can catch it fine but why try too hard and why aren't vets offering this.:confused: |
I used the pee pad upside down and the pee just sits on it and then I syringed it into a container. Good luck |
What worked for me with Odie was Made sure my floors were clean. Then I just kept my eye on him and when he went to tinkle, I went over with syringe and sucked it up. Then it was off to the vet with the sample. I know with my girl Sami the vet had to express her bladder to get a sample.:animal-pa |
Thank you for the advice. I just mopped floors this morning. Now I just have to catch her in the act...I wouldn't want to take in the wrong sample. :rolleyes: She pees on her pad then a few mins later will pee on the floor someplace & this is not typical of Bailey at all. She is going to be 3 next month and has not had many accidents unless she is sick.:( |

a sterile container in one hand and a large plastic sauce spoon. Not a ladle. It is too thick. as soon as your dog goes down to pee quickly place the spoon being careful not to scape the grass too bc you want to keep the urine clean. I am also assuming your dog is a female :-) Haven't read the whole thread. I am rushing off to bed and I wanted to post something for you :-) But also yes if having that hard of a time tell the vet to just do cyntosesis (sp?) |

I just use those disposable ziplock/glad containers. Loki's a pro at urine samples as we do one almost monthly. He doesn't care what I stick under him. I tried with Sam (she has a UTI too) and she was more interested in the container than peeing. She thought I had treats or something. Finally she went and I stuck it under there. You have to get them facing away from you and stick it under once they start going. (BTW, Sammy had a lot of blood in hers so they did do the cysto once we got to the vet. I don't know if her drugs are working :( It's been 3+ days...) |
I use a 1/4" cup measuring cup with a long handle. It's small enough to slip underneath. Lady also has no modesty so it's not a problem. :D Cranberry Relief is a good cranberry supplement for dogs. You have to find out what her pH is first, though, so you don't mess up the balance and cause stones. Dogs should have a neutral pH of about 7.0. Less than 7.0 is too acidic and greater than 7.0 is too alkaline. Cranberry will lower urine pH so it should only be given if the pH is too high. |
Thank you for all the suggestions. I did get a sample...off the floor:rolleyes: and she does have a UTI. She has to be on meds for a week or so then take another sample back. To everyone elses baby that has a UTI....give them a hug from us and feel better soon. I'll update in a couple of days. |
I'm having the same problem collecting another sample. She only likes to go outside. Tried locking her in the kitchen but she would just hold it. If I take her outside she will squat but stop as soon as I try to put something under her. What is a cyntosensis? Is it done in the office and is it costly? |
