Bella's trip to Hospital

Okay what you don't wanna hear....but PLEASE listen.

First I suggest throwing away all Bullies & Flossies.

It started last week Diggy got the poops. I went to bland diet & lots of fluids. He seemed fine but still had the poops. Took in fecal sample came back clear. Sunday at 4pm Bella puked, by 6 puking every hour, by 8 wouldnt walk very legthargic so off to the hospital we went. They drew blood and handed her back to me she wa squirming so i took her outside and she pooped PURE blood, violently. I ran her back in and screamed take her help her!!! They hooked her to Iv and ran a ton of tests. From acting perfectly normal to this in 5 hours pointed towards her getting into something which I KNEW she didnt.
Pancreatic Lipase Test was normal.
CBC Hemoconcentration, increased Lipase.
Low blood count
Fecal Cytology Large # of Clostridium, large # of rods.
Lateral and V/D Abdominal Radiographs Mild belly gas, Large amount of gas in colon.
3-5% dehydrated.

She was going into hypovolemic shock.

Diagnosis Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis
Clostridium Overgrowth

So she had to stay the night in hospital...and at 7:30 am I checked her out and transported her to my regular vet where they also admitted her.

after she was admitted I ran home got Diggy because BOTH dr.s said this is contagious

Grabbed Diggy ran all the tests on him also and sure enough he had it too. Not nearly as bad as Bella. They injected fluids in him and prescribed antibiotics and a belly medicine. So he got to go home with me.

Bella stayed all day at the vet and they released her to me at 5:30 pm last night. They are on a special antibiotic probably nothing you heard of as we are lucky enough to have a compounding company here so this script would have been a special order but I could get it right away, I/D Hills diet, Kaolin Pectate for belly and poops, and LOTS of fluids.

So i have pedialyte & pedialyte popsicles that i offer every 1/2 hour or so.
She is eating well but not thrilled about drinking so its a constant battle.

Diggy is very normal again pooping solid already but i still try and get him to drink a lot too.

So you prolly have figured out with the THROW AWAY BULLIES AND FLOSSIES that thats where all this started. And it is. The bacteria grows on the bullies after they chew them and they turn to much...then they go back and chew again.

There is a lot of info on the net about this if your interested in reading up google Clostridium.

Please educate yourself on this and know the warning signs/symptoms

Bella went from fine to the start of hypovolemic shock in a matter of hours. I dont wish this on anyone PLEASE learn about this and make an educated decision before giving your dogs Bullies or Flossies. And if your sitting there saying my dogs have never had a problem and we have given these for years....SO DID I never had 1 issue til now.

I hear some people on here complaining about vet bills at times and how tough they are to pay and I AGREE!!!!! So simply educating yourself on this could save you WELL over $1,000 in vets bills in less than 24 hours over a simple 5.00 flossy.

OMG - how scary for you and your babies, Paula!!!! So glad they are both going to be okay.

One question on the bully stix - was this with a single day of eating the stick or with repeated days of eating?

Thanks for all of the information. Im so sorry that Bella had to go through all of this. That is awful.
Glad to hear that she and her brother are going to be okay!

I was SO CLOSE to calling you.....I was at the Affiliated Vet Emergency on Northline. I WAS TRIPPING! I was in complete panic and in and out of shock myself. My sister was with me and i know that sounds overboard but had you seen Bella decline as fast and hard as she did I thought she was gonna die and then i would panic BAD.

The flossies were gifts for Diggys B-day he got 4 total from all different stores so they were less than a week old. PLUS I had taken them away on Thursday due to Diggy getting the poops. SO they chewed them for less than 48 hours. Very scary.

You totally could have called me and I would have been there with you in a flash!!!!

That is really scary about the flossies. When I give my girls Pixie Stix, I will let them chew for a few hours and then I throw away what is left. I worry about repeated chewing and bacteria. I've heard of bacteria building on cow's hooves and things like that. I wonder if the smokey processing on the bully stix/flossies makes them more susceptible to bacteria??????

Oh my goodness, Paula! I am sorry that this happened with your fur babies!! I am glad to hear that they are already feeling better, though. As for the bully stix....I believe it! I didn't kow about this condition that you are talking about, but had to stop giving bullies to our dogs a couple of months ago. This was all because our Harley started having constant diarrhea and we couldn't figure out what was going on with him. He would have it and then we would give him some Albon and it would clear and then, WHAM!, he was VERY sick again. We stopped giving him the Bully Stix for good and not one more diarrhea! It stopped as soon as we stopped with the Bullies!!

Thanks for sharing your story...hopefully, it will help another fur baby.

I am sorry to hear this, I am glad both are doing well. I would have never thought of this.

diggy4 03-11-2008 09:41 AM

well thank you Jodie, my sister came with me but I seriously will call if Ihave to go back up there....at the first sign of poops or vomiting again we are IMMEDIATLEY going back up there so keep your cell on she isnt out of the woods yet :(

Tammy, I bet you 100% that Harley had the bacteria and the antibiotics fought it off. Im not sure about processes and what ones tend to have it more or less....all I know is after seeing what I seen...I will NEVER ever ever give another flossie, bully, or anything even remotely CLOSE again. I hope and pray this does help someone who isnt aware of this...It's so scary.

i am so sorry to hear this. i hope an pray both your babies make 100% improvemnt. so am i correct in thinking that its due to repeated chewing on these bullysticks and flossies? so if they chewed at one sitting then throw it away it would be ok? i know i should'nt even take the chance and i won't. i just want to try and educate myself. i have a unopened bully that is going in the trash now.

GinosMommy 03-11-2008 09:48 AM

oh you poor things!! BIG HUGS!!

I dont give flossies or bullies.

Well I asked that question and both vets said same thing probably was from repeated chewing BUT these bullies were not left to them for more that 48 hours...they prolly chewed them 2-3 times in those 48 hours. So how rapid did this bacteria grow? they cannot say. Was the bacteria present before I even handed them the bullies? Dont know that either. I doubt Red Barn, Merrick, and other companies making these products would ever tell us the amount of bacteria present on these products when shipped to the store. Some smell so bad and I just wonder if its there before out babies even get them????

ellie81 03-11-2008 09:56 AM

omg how scary, there's a bully stick somewhere in my house that's been around for a while... I'll throw it right away!!!!! Bengi's not much into them anyway, I don't think he'll mind.
Hope both your babies get better soon!!!!

my2boyz 03-11-2008 09:57 AM

I'm sorry this happened to your babies and I hope they will be fine.

I do have a question though. Is the bacteria from these things being an animal product or is the bacteria from the dog's mouth that gets left on the chew or is it a combination of the two? Can the same bacteria be left on other toys they chew on daily or can it be passed from one of the chews you mentioned to say a Nylabone or fuzzy toy? Just to be cautious I think I'll run all the toys through the laundry today.

OH MY GOSH....I had never heard anyone else complain about the smell of Bully Stix, but we had a problem with the very last one that we gave our babies! It was when we finally decided that Harley's diarrhea and the awful smell of the bully stix had to related. It honestly smelled like amonia or something like that....IT WAS SOOOOOOOOOOO GROSS!!

It was explained to me as every dog has this bacteria in them but when the bacteria is aggravated or some how multiplies is when its a hazard. Im still reading up and learning about it ...I suggest google and read as much as you can. One vet said yes was my toys the other said probably not a huge risk....so i am washing everything to be safe :)
