Default epilepsy

Just wondering if there is anyone who's yorkie might have epilepsy, I was just told mine had it after having two seizures now she is on medicine for the rest of her life. I was just looking for some advice about it.

Sorry to hear your going through this.
It terrible having to see your baby have a seizure.
It take awhile for some meds to control them.
Here is a good site with lots of info about them
I used it when I was dealing with a male I use to have.

I am not an expert and there are many people here that can give you better advice. I can only speak from personal experience. A year ago I bought a 7 wk. old Yorkie from a breeder I trusted, and 7 days later it started having seizures. They checked for low sugar levels, bile acids (liver), they did abdominal sonogram and lots of blood work and still my vet would not give me a diagnosis of epilepsy (?). My next option was to go to a neurological specialist in another county to rule out a brain mass. My vet said that when they are so young and already having seizures it is more than likely a consequence of something else. Epilepsy with no underlying cause is usually seen when they are 6 months or older. I did get a second opinion and both vets urged me to return the puppy back to the breeder. I never heard from the breeder again. It did not end on good terms. The breeder would not refund me. If you have any other questions PM me. Lots of luck to you and your baby

Hummmmm..
Sound like what I went through.
but the pup I bought at 5 months started having them at 7 months.
The Vet ran all testing ..no known cause.
He said he just wasn't wired right in the head.
Dealing with the breeder he came from, did not end well either.

Has the vet done a bile acid test?? How did he determine that it was epilepsy? Did he do testing to rule out other things? Many times, liver issues can cause seizures...How old is your yorkie?

My yorkie had his first seizure as a pup due to liver problems.

Winston has seizures...he's not been diagnosed with Epilepsy...the assumption is that hypoglycemia/low blood sugar is causing them and Nutrical brings him out of them. But the strange thing is this happened to him as an adult not a tiny puppy. I have been puzzled by this problem for nearly a year now...they aren't as frequent but they are violent and it pains me that there seems to be no real answers.
How old is your Yorkie? How much does it weigh? How long do the seizures last? What medication is your baby on for Epilepsy?
My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your little one, we hurt when they hurt...

My Lady has idiopathic or organic epilepsy meaning there is no cause. She has been getting seizure medications since she was diagnosed at age 4&1/2.

How old is your Yorkie? In dogs under a year old, seizures are usually a symptom of another condition like liver disease, thyroid imbalance, etc.. In older dogs, it is usually a brain tumor. Did your vet do tests to rule out other causes of the seizures? That is usually done first and when all the results are normal, a diagnosis of epilepsy is given.

Epilepsy is a scary disease, but in most cases has no effect on quality or life or lifespan. My Lady has been an epileptic for almost eight years now.

This is the best website on canine epilepsy I have ever found:

Please feel free to pm me if you have any questions or need support. I know it can be a frightening diagnosis.

My Yorkie, Izzy B., started having seizures at around 8 weeks of age (we got her at 6 weeks) but we did not know at first that this was what was causing her "spells" that we would find her experiencing early in the mornings. She had blood work, chest x-ray, and due to possible enlarged heart, even an echocardiogram!!!!! All were normal, but as soon as she had her last set of puppy shots, she had 3 back to back seizures late that night. She was very critical for a couple of days and the vet started her on phenobarbital. We then took her to OSU in Stillwater, Oklahoma for liver shunt testing. That was normal but the vets there did triple the amount of phenobarbital she was taking. We returned home and once all the liver testing was back in, they wanted us to return for a brain CT, but since she had not had anymore seizures after starting the phenobarbital, we did not go back (at the advice of our local vet). After approximately 6-8 months, I wanted to take her off the phenobarbital and start her on another seizure medication. Our local vet suggested weaning her off completely and seeing what happened. I very cautiously weaned her off over about 1-1/2 months and to this day, she has not experienced another seizure!!!!! We have no idea what caused them but maybe there is hope for your little one to outgrow them, too. And, the breeder we got her from was kept apprised weekly of her condition, and never once offered to help with her medical expenses (which were well over $1000.00 besides the $850.00 that we paid for her). We did not take him to small claims court as many people suggested we do, as we were afraid that we would have to give her back to the breeder in return for the medical expenses, and it was obvious that he didn't care what happened to her. Whatever happens, please know there are many, many knowledgeable people here at YorkieTalk who will help you through this, as they already are doing. I received so much support from those who had experienced what I was going through.
