Is there any hope for my little puppy 17 days ago my dog gave birth to 5 healthy puppies. 4 girls and a boy, for about a week all was great, everyone gaining and suddenly I noticed my little guy losing weight. At 8 days he was 8 oz. then he just started losing weight, down to 7.3. I did everything suggested, he seemed to be getting better, would suckle from Mom when I moved the others out of the way, I was supplementing him with puppy formula, I still am. But, he has not gained much at all, he only weighs 7.5 right now and has stayed fairly consistent the last couple of days. He no longer has any interest in feeding from mom and I am basically forcing the food in to him, he does not seem interested at all. After feeding, he seems in distress and moves around quite a bit before settling down and falling asleep among his much larger sisters. My vet checked him out and couldn't find anything wrong, although, he didn't run a bunch of tests or anything, so just told me to keep him warm and try to get him to eat, said it could go either way. I would sure appreciate any input from anyone who has had similiar experience good or bad, as I am feeling very sad and afraid he is not going to make it. Martha |

Have you tried the fading puppy liver remedy?? http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...t=liver+remedy Sorry to hear he's not doing well. I hope this helps! |
Its worth a try. I wish I would have known about it several years ago when my litter was born, we lost our little male to fading puppy syndrome. What a sad experience. :( |
I hope you try it. feminvstr is sooo full of knowledge and has extensive experiance. Her advise is SOLID! Hope the little man gets better! |
Oh, the very best to this little one!! Can understand how upset and concerned you are. |
Hope he gets better |
Sending your little guy lots of hugs and prayers that he gets better! |
Thanks everyone for your good wishes and all. I have tried that recipie, no improvement so far, but will keep trying! Maybe I just need to find the right formula, it seems like what I have been giving him is hard for him to digest or something. :( |
I hope your little one gets better. I have no advice but will keep you in my prayers. |
Sending healing thoughts for your little puppy to gain strength. Warmly, Deborah |
aww bless him :( is he pooing and weeing ok? |
Keeping your little guy in my prayers:) hope he is better. |
Checking in on your little guy. How is he tonight? |
The litte guy is going downhill fast, I don't think he will make it, but it won't be because we didn't try:( He doesn't seem to be suffering, just sleeps mostly. Thanks everyone for your concern. |
Have you given him any karo syrup? It will give him an extra boost in energy to feed and should spark his appitite. Sending my thoughts and prayers |
Are you or the mother pottying him after he eats? I am so sorry to hear he is not doing any better... :( Prayers for you an your little guy! |
Just wondering how the little guy made out through the night... |
He did make it thru the night, we got him to eat a little bit. Mom is taking care of his peeing and pooping. He is hanging in there, but he is very weak so I am trying to not get my hopes up. Thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers, we won't give up until he does! Martha |
I have tube fed, I know many do not like to do this, it is scary and serious, and needs to be done right. But we saved a little one tube feeding every two hours, for two weeks, she suvived when the odds were against her..she weighs 4 pounds today..she weighed 2 oz at birth and her sibling weighed almost 6. that is the only way I know how to do it and get the right amount into a tiny puppy. |
I think you need to tube feed him too. Yes, there are complications that can arise from it, but the risks are far outweighed. Tube feeding gets the food directly into the tummy so he doesn't even have to try. It's the best way on a weak pup. At least he made it through the night so he has a bit of fight left in him! |
Just now seeing this thread and sending prayers your way.... :hands: :hands: |
I agree tube feed. Then you can be sure how much he is getting too. Watch out for dehydration. Even when you are getting formula in them it can still happen. I hate giving fluids subQ, but I am willing to do whatever it takes to give a puppy a chance. I had one little girl that was only 4 oz at 4 3 weeks. I fed her for a week, but still lost her. On the bright side, I have had others that were little and was able to save them. I have a tiny boy that is 10 weeks old and just made it to 1 pound. We celebrated!!! |
Martha, You, your family, and your puppies are in our thoughts and prayers. Please let us know how the little guy is doing. |
He's Hungry!! Just as I was wondering where to take him to get some help with maybe tubefeeding this little guy, he decided he was hungry and wanting to actually suck it down by himself! I know he still has a ways to go to be sure he is going to make it, but I am so relieved to have him starting to show improvement. He still weighs 7.4 oz., so he hasn't lost any, but hasn't gained any either so that is the goal now to get some weight on him! He is starting to get his eyes open also, his sisters have been for several days now. I told my daughter today that he was getting better thanks to everyone here and all your good thoughts and prayers, thank you all so much! :) |
It makes me so HAPPY to read that!! Here's wishing him all the very best!!! |
