Should the GE have a Cap on Spending?
 
I am posting this poll in hopes that those who don't want to air their feelings in public (and, I totally get that) will be able to be heard. You don't have to post a response or anything so no worries. But I am hoping everyone with any interest/feelings about/griefs with the GE will respond to the poll.

So, I'm playing devils advocate here... Lets say a cap is set and someone goes over it, what happens? Do they not get to do GE any more??
Who will "police" the spending? Will receipts be required?


The gift exchange is optional. No one has to sign up. if you dont want to spend the money, dont sign up. Those who don't have the money this time, often sit out. Those with multiple dogs rotate dogs. I do know that some people sign up and don't fulfill their end of the bargain, and that's wrong, but putting a cap on someone's GENEROSITY??? That's completely wrong.

I agree with this. I always say you never can tell how much people spend. Between my coupons and sale combinations, I could easily spend $15 on $70 worth of stuff.

But I know if the cap was set at $80, I would go over every time...

IMO, this would only be a temporary fix.

No one is trying to put a cap on anyone's generosity - we're trying to see if there is a way to put a cap on the marked DISPARITY -- so that so many people don't feel completely priced out of the GE. Like I said in the other thread, as the disparity kept growing over the years, the size of the GE went down in correlation to that, which is too bad (there used to be a huge # of participants). It *is* a reality that there are some people who believe if they spend $250, they should receive the same back -- bc we've seen and heard the complaints about it. Sure, those folks don't understand the true nature of giving, but we can't do anything about that. We can, however, try to at least better manage what has become a big disparity of spending vs. suggested spending. At least then, people can better manage being in the ballpark of the amount spent.

As far as policing it, we won't. We'd hope and expect that people would respect the guidelines and their fellow participants by not going overboard and thereby risking making that person (ostensibly and potentially) feel as if they didn't do enough on their end.

I'm actually disappointed that there hasn't been more people to vote! All these people who won't speak up apparently still aren't when they have a chance. I honestly don't get it. I got talked to like crap for putting my opinion out and I'm still speaking up.

I have 5 animals and have became good at watching for deals. I use every possible coupon I can get my hands on so that like Heather said.... she could ONLY spend $15.00 on $70 worth of products. That is why I mentioned in the other post. That I would only count the money I spent not the original asking price. My buddy would still get an awesome box with my budget. I said I was going to spend $125.00ish.... IF there was a cap I was thinking more along the lines of $200.00. Sometimes, I wish here on YT that everyone could just agree to disagree.

At this point in time right now, 193 people have viewed this thread and only 29 have voted. C'mon - it's anonymous. Why open the thread and not chose an option and vote? Even if you don't participate in the GE's, surely you have an opinion - you may want to participate later if it is more appealing to you, right?

Please vote - this is where we can all show how we feel about it without it being personally public. :)

I don't get the non-voting thing either...it's just one click, lol! A lot of folks may not be aware of the poll, btw. I don't know if you want to post a thread in General, linking to it...? Just a thought. It def would be nice to know what a good majority of people thought.

i voted...in the end i just wish it didnt come down to one person feeling like they got cheated if you cant spend 150 bucks or something like that.....i did hear some comments to that affect in the only ge i joined in on from a person who thought enough wasnt spent in comparision to what they spent. i wish the focus was more on how special the things are that are bought, handmade and picked out for your baby.

Thanks for voting.... I'm sorry that it came down to that in GE you were end. I hope, it didn't have an effect on you not joining again because any of us would love to have one of your cute doggies as our buddy! :)

Great idea! I was also wondering if the same user viewed it once or twice, how that is counted?

oh thank you no it wasnt at me but i still feel bad and just wish it wasnt always about the $$$ per say. for me its the thought that counts the most. :)

I know.... my feelings get hurt for other people too. My wish is that everyone who joins in the future will feel that way (That it's the thought that counts.).

It is an gift exchange. It is where the people who join get a random buddy to spoil(Admin chooses them and we don't know until the end). There are usually 4 a year. There is a section all about it. I would love for you to browse some threads there. It is the sweetest thing on YT. I love all the heart that goes into it.

LOTS of people have no idea that YT has a fun, optional event that we refer to as the GE. I would give the poll some time to circulate & be talked about. ;)

Personally, I'd LOVE to see a few different guides for pricing offered. ie, a $5 white elephant once a year.

This brings about another topic - a GE for those outside the US and Canada. Hopefully, one day, it can be figured out how to work one like that. We have so many members in various countries - it would be fun to somehow be able to do gift exchanges across the miles like that.

If I'm not mistaken, a person can view a thread as many times as wanted but it only counts as one view total for that member. Is this right, Ann/Wylie's Mom?

OK, Any gift exchange I've ever been in has had a limit that people were to stick as close as possible to. That prevented issues later, and everyone felt good about participating. When you leave the amount to spend open, anything can happen. What seems like a reasonable amount to spend to ME would seem like either a high amount or a low amount to others. I think it would be best to know what amount people should shoot for when they join the GE too. Less headaches later for everyone.

** These are just my opinions backed by my experiences. ** The concerns I stated above are why I haven't joined GE yet. I was afraid I'd spend the wrong amount.

I agree I loved the GE that we participated in. Buster's favorite gift was a bed specially made for him. It's hard because we are dealing with people's expectations of what they give and what they feel they should receive in return. People who overspend should not get their harness all in a twist if their buddy only spends the minimum. I understand how some people would be afraid to participate for fear their gift would not measure up which is sad and seems contrary to the whole idea behind the gift exchange. LOL my fear for the GE is being able to come up with clever hints.

:thumbup: Yep, I posted on another thread about hwo I wouldn't mind if someone made me something out of there trash. And I really meant it. But the dog talk language and the hints scare the crap outta me. I'm gonna recruit MandiesMom(Terri) for help b/c she has offered her service for anyone and is excellent at it if I may add! :D Terri, we can go on and start the dog verses people word thread. :) I have alot to learn!

The GE around Christmas time to be a lower then normal GE amount so that MAYBE everyone would join! :)
