What pain medication did your vet give you
 
I want to see the results of what the main pain medication is being given to our dogs after spay, neuter or surgery

NSAIDs after spay, helped her a lot.

Bumping and if you want to post on thread what surgery was done that pain med was prescribed for that would be helpful as well

Dex was sent home after neuter with no pain meds - stayed up all night and at vets office at 7 am mad and they gave me deramaxx and gave him a pain shot and we switched vets

Dee Dee was sent home with rimadyl after spay

I had to look this up from 2006 when Bella was spayed. She was sent home with liquid Torbugesic and received an injection of Torbugesic/Butorphanol prior to being discharged. I do recall that I was asked prior to her spay IF I wanted these "extra's" for her post op comfort...um, YES!

I just received a one year old male Yorkie to foster who is recovering from an amputation to his rear leg and a neuter. He was sent home with an antibiotic, Rimadyl & Torbutrol as well.

Rimadyl is not my drug of choice for older dogs due to side effects with Liver & Seizure complications.

thanks for posting this and looking it up :) I am not a fan of nsaids myself especially for liver dogs or dogs with ibd

Our vet prescribes Torb-Val for spay/neuter & dentals. I only had to give it to them once since they keep them overnight. Didn't like giving it to them, makes them pant & they act like zombies...staring into space, then falling asleep. Not sure which it falls under on the poll?

Farrah got spayed last Tuesday and no pain meds were given to go home. She did great and I think it is a good idea since she is a very active girl. This way she feels it and doesn't run, jump and climb. Trust me I cuddled her most of 2 days following the surgery.

She also weighs 3lbs ,12oz and just seems too small for drugs.

Dante and Leo both were sent home with Metacam after neutering. They also had the laser surgery as opposed to the traditional.

I agree with this as i sure did not lol until my dog had a reaction to metacam had no clue they were given these drugs 6 years ago:( when they were spayed and neutered

call vet but I think it is torbutrol - they get rapid heart beat with narcotics as they are opium based as demi was breathing much faster on torbutrol

My yorkie, Addyson was given rimadyl to carry home with her if she needed something for in pain, after her spay surgery. I gave her a couple of dosages and everything was okay. But, since I have read all the risk that are associated with rimadyl, I will not use it again.

Mine were all given some sort of pain shot and then sent home with metacam. I only gave that night and next morning (1 drop per pound). None was needed after that.

Isabella was spayed last week and was given a shot at the Vet and then came home with Metacam.. She had no bad reactions, Thank God!!

Not all vets do. Some of the vets here in Michigan give you the option. It costs more but the recovery time, scaring,is less. My boys are very active so trying to keep them down is not an easy task. So I went and paid the extra and they were back on their feet the next day.

My Kitty had a cyst removed yesterday and came home with Rimadyl.

umm, kitty as in your cat? or is your dog named kitty?

i only ask because oral rimadyl shouldn't be given to cats. the effect it has on cats hasn't been studied properly. i have heard of the injectable being given to cats but that is in very rare circumstances.

I think it is her dog as Lillymae was a vet tech for years and I think she knows about the rimadyl and cat issue at least I am hoping so :(

Yes, Kitty as in cat. Well that's neat because the vet who did her surgery and every other vet in the valley where I live gives it to cats and when I lived in California everyone I used there did too. I use lot's of diff vets for rescues when I have them altered because I want it done and over with so I use whoever can get them in the quickest. And it is always in pill form so what's up with that:(

No when I was in the field Rimadyl wasn't being used yet. I have not given any to Missy Booger as she doesn't seem to be bothered by the ordeal at all. However I did give it to others and her when she chewed the nipple off of a baby bottle and swallowed it:eek: Needless to say it had to be surgically removed the following morning. Damn Brat.

Its use is very limited in cats.
Rimadyl.com says not to give it.

This is a general comment not directed at you.

I don't understand some people who are not giving any pain meds at all. Imagine having your insides ripped out, you know it hurts! Just because dogs do not react to the pain as the same as humans does not mean they do not feel it. Spaying (and other things) are very serious and painful surgeries..

That is exactly why a vet who refuses to prescribe pain meds would not be seeing my girl. IMO, it is not kind to the animal and I will not put my dog through it.

wow, i've never heard of it being given to cats so readily. I can't even remember a time when one of the vets i've worked for has given it to a cat. Giving pain meds to cats is tricky because they cannot metabolize pain drugs as well as dogs. they lack a certain enzyme in their liver i think.

I don't remember what was given to cats when i worked in general practice. When i worked for the orthopedic surgeons cats were given specific IV medications to control pain after surgery in their IV fluids (there are a few other IV/IM medications that can be given on an as needed basis as well while in hospital). Also if the cats were big enough (over 7lbs) they were given a fentanyl patch. And on the very rare occasion that nothing else is helping they were given a tiny dose of metacam.
