| i say the caretaker. dont offer to take care of a pet if your not gonna pay the consequences. they do these things, you have to expect it from an animal. |

| Caretaker. When someone asks me to watch their dog that is what I do. If I have something to do and can't keep on eye on it, I put it somewhere it can't do damage (like a crate). I feel when it's in my care I am responsible for its safety and whatever trouble it may get into.

| This has been a hot topic here in this house for the last past 2 days. My oldest daughter and husband think the owner should pay. But the rest of us think the caretaker should pay. So I put it in different terms. I told my daughter if you were dog or baby sitting and the dog or kid got ahold of one of your school books,,,,, who should pay. The one who is doing the watching or the dogs owner or childs parent who were not even there? I can see paying IF the dog who got loose from their owners home and attacked or damaged property. These are reasons someone should take responsibility for. You should not have to pay when someone is being paid to care for your pet,,,,, even if not being paid. The caretaker should be the responsible one who offered to care for the pet. Therefor it is on that person who was not doing their job inorder for something like this to happen. I don't know, maybe there is no right or wrong answer. Like my husband said it's more like a moral question. If one of my kids or pets did damage that I had to pay for while under the supervision of someone who was supposed to watch them,,,,, I would be pissed!!!! Now morality speaking,,, I would STILL be pissed, but I think I would offer to pay for half. And never ever let that person watch them again.

| Yorkie Lover Donating Member | I would say the owner...my brother has two dogs that come to visit whenever they are in town...and of course there are times when we leave them alone to go shopping or out to eat...the first couple of times they came everything was great, all the girls did great together...but the last time they came, his two girls started chewing on a piece of furniture, so after that they were keep separate from my two girls and all the furniture so that nothing else would be destroyed....I would say that if the owner knew that there has been a precious problem or anything kind of sign that this may happen, then they would defintely be to blame...if not, I think it depends, the caretaker can not always watch every single move of the dog and is petsitting to help others out and should not have to have her house torn apart because of that!!

Doesn't sound like they even slightly know this dog, much less own it! I think you will agree .... if your dog even nibbles on anything ... you as the owner would know!! I think it's ridiculous that they would blame you!!

If you were really good friends then you could pay half the costs each. As a caretaker you should know what your taking on before you look after your friends dog and if it's a chewer then it's down to you whether you choose to take on a dog that has a few problems, if you do take it on to look after then you only have yourself to blame when the dog chews your furniture. | |

| A responsible owner should pay for the damage or replacement. It's no different with kids or dogs. The parents should be responsible for damage their kids do. It's no different with dogs.
