My new family member!
 

Ok, so I got a bunny... well I rescued a bunny! A co-workers sister is moving to Florida and she can't take her bunny because the weather will be too much for her. She is an outdoor bunny and hates being indoors actually. I have owned rabbits most of my life and had no problems taking her. My friend warned me she was big. I figured I had 8-9lb rabbits, thats pretty big... so I didn't think much of it!

Well when she was dropped off on saturday with her hutch I nearly fell to the ground. Please welcome to my family, Lyra, our 18lb 1/2 Flemish Giant 1/2 Giant Angora baby girl! My 12lb Fletcher is IN LOVE!!! :)

You bring back fond memories of my younger brother's black bunny named Satchmo.

LOL Can you believe it? I still just stare at her and can't get over how BIG she is! She only likes me right now. I don't know if it's because she was handled mostly by 2 females in the past, but she growls at the 2 boys and my boyfriend so they are almost a little afraid of her. They love her though so I hope she bonds to them too. Whenever I come outside to her cage she comes out and climbs the sides and when I open the door she nudges my hand for petting, she never growls at me and lets me pick her up with no problem. She really is a sweet bunny, just reallllllllllyyyy heavy! LOL

Fletcher, my bigger boy, is obsessed with her. He zooms out the door directly to her cage and puts his paws up on it to look in, when shes out he follows her around almost like he's her bodyguard and shes bigger than he is!! I'll have to get pictures. When she lays down, he lays down beside her or behind her. He's so funny and cute! Dexter got swiped at for being too close to her on the first day we had her so he stays FARRRR away from her. She more scared him than anything because he didn't hear the growl warning and he didn't move so he didn't see her go to swipe him.

OMG!! She is huge but soooooo darn adorable! Wow. I love bunnies! I had a few growing up.

Angoras are gorgeous I didn't know they came in the "giant" verison!!

I had bunnies for years. One day I'll have another one. <sigh>

I'd love to put her in my backyard and see if TJ would chase her - hahahahaha - we have bunny's in our backyard everyday, and he has a field day "trying" to chase one - LOL - he'd run and hide if he saw her :cool:

Dex runs after her barking lately but he won't get too close! Fletcher is her bodyguard, he never leaves her side. LOL He is actually really good to her, but then again she is 1 1/2 times his size! LOL

Oh my goodness, that is the most adorable bunny - I would love to have a bunny that big and lovable! We have two little bunny girls, and Levi is OBSESSED with them. He cries and cries when they are in their crate and he can't watch them hop around. I'll attach a picture of my bunny girls Olive and Scarlett - nowhere near as big, squishy, and cuddly as your new one! Congratulations!!

I is getting new bunnies soon! I almost got Flemish but sadly he passed. They is the most placid gentle dog, yes?

awwwww CUTE bunnies!!!! I love bunnies... Ive had so many in my lifetime! Each one has had different personalities. Some are so laid back and some are so wound up! Our Lyra greets me every morning like shes a dog. If she could wag her tail she would. I feel so bad she is stuck in a hutch all day while I'm at work. I take her out to graze every night for an hour or so though.

My girl is BIG but very friendly and gentle... although she is not that good yet with the boys or my boyfriend. He tried to spend some quality time with her last night but she wanted nothing to do with it! haha

Ha ha! Female through and through lol. Flemish Giants are renowned for being the gentle giants of the rabbit world.

I didn't know that! There is probably soooo much I don't know about her breed. I used to have French lops, mini lops, rexs, mini rexs and a blanc de hotot (eyeliner bunny) but never a big bunny like this. She definitely is a sweetheart!

what does she eat ?

I had a bunny for a while - a friend asked me if he could give my boys an Easter Bunny and I said 'Yes and how sweet of you'.....well little did I know when he showed up for our 'Easter' get together he had been referring to a REAL bunny - I had no idea ! He brought this tiny little bunny in a little dish and my jaw dropped....course I had my husband build him a bunny condo cause my boys were infatuated but eventually we had to re-home him to a nice family that had other bunnies (we moved) and that's been my only experience with them - I used to let him roam my house - he'd watch tv with me and sit in my lap till the little 'pellets' took over and I was finding them everywhere......he sure was cute though

that is one handful of a bunny - you could walk her on a little harness !

Our girls definitely have their own little personalities. Olive is more laid-back but a little shy, and Scarlett is more brave and outgoing. Scarlett hops around everywhere all the time checking things out, and she is the one that will excitedly greet you when you walk into the room. They are good little bunnies...completely litterbox trained and they usually just hop around in the designated bunny room :)

I had a bunny one time that was an outdoor bunny, then I moved to my own apt and it had to be an indoor bunny. My roommate got a cat and the cat literbox trained the bunny! It was cool! I'd find my bunny in the bathtub all the time when it was warm he'd get in there and just lay on the cool porcelain! LOL

Vee, that does happen with indoor bunnies... :) Literbox training is hard but so worth it!

Congrats on your new family member. She is gorgeous! I had a friend once that had one in her appartment and he was litterbox trained. He scared me though because he was mean and would bite. Yours looks so loveable and cuddly! I love to watch them eat.

I would love to have a bunny but we live in a row house and no place to put a hutch. I had a bunny when I was a kid, he was an outdoor bunny and lived in a hutch next to the barn (for the horse).

Now that we are city people I have to stick to small dogs and cats. I would have an indoor bunny but I am not sure my cat would like that.

My roomie had a cat and I had a bunny and they were the best of friends, soo cute together. They would lay side by side and just hang out with each other!

Yep, bunnies growl. They actually only thump their hind leg as warning that they are feeling unsafe too.

Just friendly advice: Please don't use harness on her. It common misconception that it okay. Bunnies (even giant one) has very weak spine that can snap very easily. If they try to escape a harness or fall or anything, they very easily die.

Oh yes, she is living a life of unrestrained luxury in my fenced in yard when I'm home. When I'm not home, she is safety tucked away in her hutch! :) I don't have a reason good enough to not just carry her or let her roam free outside. I always worry when they start to twist or buck in my arms that they will break their back.... actually Ive owned bunnies so long and knew that for so long that I actually panic a bit when one of my dogs twists or tries to get away when I'm holding him too, like he'll break his back easily too! LOL

LOL oh well that good to know they taken care of!

Sorry, I had to come back again and look at the picture of your bunny. I love that bunny, it's so cool.

Now I am thinking about if I could adopt a bunny, getting the "stink eye" look but I think I can work around it.

awwww :) Shes a big love! I love bunnies!! They are an easy pet to take care of and they are so soft and sweet! Shes lives outside in a nice hutch and actually they do better living outside than inside, healthier for them! :)
