Loose Park

More about the park.....

Loose Park is the grande dame of all Kansas City greenways. The 80-acre park was given to the city in 1929 by Ella Loose to honor her husband Jacob, a businessman and philanthropist. Set just south of the Country Club Plaza, Loose Park provides everything from elegance to exercise. The elegance of the park stems from the famous Laura Conyers Smith Municipal Rose Garden (built in 1939) and the classical walkway that leads to it. As spring arrives, more than 4,000 roses -- in 125 varieties -- burst to life in the circular garden courtyard reminiscent of a royal setting for a Shakespeare play. Fountains and statues, stone and wooden arbors, large verandas and pathways make this one of the most romantic spots in the whole city. Many Kansas City couples can trace their relationships from first kiss to wedding reception in the rose garden. And elegance bows to tranquility just southeast of the rose garden, where a multi-tiered pond sits at the edge of the park. Plenty of benches, bridges and small nooks allow for a restful stop from the busy city, even though the lake is just yards from Wornall Road. The pond attracts geese and ducks and is stocked with some ornamental fish. Exercise is easy to find as well, although no athletic fields are allowed in the expansive green space. There is, however, a jogging and walking path that encircles the entire park as well as tennis courts just west of the rose garden. And, the gently rolling hills that make up the large grassy middle are perfect for flying kites, playing catch, walking the dog or just meditating under a tree. There's also history lessons at Loose, both war and artistic. Markers along the southern edge of the park describe the Battle of Westport, part of which was fought near these grounds. The artistic history is not marked, but perhaps should be. In 1978, world-famous artist Christof and his wife Jean-Claude wrapped the Loose Park pathways with 135,000 feet of golden yellow cloth. The cloth is gone now, but the artistry of the park that attracted Christof remains.

I am planning on bringing Murphy, one of my Biewer males. He now has two litters on the ground. Alas, none of them are here with me though. Crossing my fingers for a July litter.

Is someone going to send or post an itinerary for us all? (or did I miss it somewhere?)
I need to map quest how to get to the hotel. I go to the airport in KC all of the time, but the Plaza area is quite a ways from the airport.

If some are wanting good bar b que. The chef at the Holiday Inn on the Plaza comes highly recommended. He won a bar b que contest here in Marysville.

Woo Hoo Kathy I can't Wait to see Murphy! Or have I met him?;)

P.S. I was worried about you last night with the storms.. Hope you are ok.

daisy mae06 06-06-2008 06:47 AM

What time are we meeting at the park Friday???.... I need to Plan the Drive down;)

Sunnie 06-06-2008 06:54 AM

GOOD question! I also wondered if there is a LOCATION in the park we should be looking for. 82 acres is a lot of area.

I was just thinking the same thing.

Do you think it would be okay for us to post them in our group since it's "private"??? I know I would feel comfortable doing that, and while I'm sure others wouldn't, that's okay too!

Only if you want everyone to see it. The group is private but everyone can read it...

Sukoshis Gma 06-06-2008 07:08 AM

Fyi....

Lisa has been in Washington DC all this week for training but I know she has been working on the meet-up in the evenings and I am sure she will update this thread as soon as she can. She flys back home some time today.

Thanks again

MyFairLacy 06-06-2008 11:45 AM

I think we are all taking a shuttle to the park from our hotel...maybe we need a "meetup" time in the hotel lobby so we will all ride on the shuttles together and know where to meet at the park?

I'm excited about BBQ and meeting everyone too!

it's supposed to be free. Lisa said the hotel would be providing free transportation via hotel shuttle to the park. That way we won't have to worry about driving there, and those that are flying won't have to rent a car.

Is anyone going to dress up on Saturday night for dinner?

....... I had asked this same question .... many weeks ago, and I think that most of the answers that came back was......"Casual". Since there are some that are coming for the meetup all day and are not staying at the hotel.
I think that I may wear a sundress, if I can find one........ or maybe some capri's.

Looking forward to meeting you!!!

I'll probably wear a dress or skirt at least a sun dress. I tend to be on the dressier side - but I don't want to stick out like a sore  ;)

daisy mae06 06-07-2008 01:55 PM

Lets just say that it will be HOT in KC so I think I will be on the more casual side;)

sexiixtc 06-07-2008 05:05 PM

when are we supposed to wear the meetup shirts? at the main meeting saturday morning?

I am not going to post an itinerary here with specific times, as this is public for anyone to see, and I'd rather keep the details private. Those who are not attending do not need to know where we'll be when. I will be e-mailing the itinerary to the e-mail addresses I have on file for everyone, and you will also receive a handout with the schedule whe you arrive that you can reference while you're there.

The hotel is about 30 minutes from the airport. I posted a link to the hotel on the first page of this thread, so you can click on that to see the hotel's address and Mapquest it accordingly.

I didn't know the chef at the hotel came so highly recommended, but so far everyone has ordered BBQ for their dinner (no veggie plates), so I guess all those staying for dinner will be enjoying the food hopefully! If it's delicious, at least that will make me feel a little better about how much they charge for their meals :eek:!!!
