Opinion's Needed We have a 4 year old male Shar Pei and our 9 month old female Yorkie. As of late our Shar Pei is getting more aggressive towards the Yorkie. Intimidating her and at times growling (showing teeth) when she tries to play with him. Tonight for no apparent reason while she was quietly chewing a toy bone he decided he wanted it and sort of aggressively pounced on her taking the bone. I thought she was a goner and so did she . She is still ,after two hours, afraid to go near him. To say the least we are concerned. He also will ,at times, run up to her in an aggressive way to get her to cower.We have had him since a pup but are worried as she is essentially defenseless. Any thoughts? |
has he just started doing this or has he been doing it for a while ?? |

We have one very large dog we have to keep an eye on. If he has a treat, bone, toy my little Yorkie will think there is no problem walking right up to the toy, treat, bone and trying to sniff or take it from the big dog. My big dog will start to growl and show his teeth. Thus, I have to watch him at all times. He does spend a lot of time outside so it's not really a problem at this house. But my point being that if the big dog wanted to do a quick snap at the Yorkie (to get his point across) I know that in a split second he could literally crush my Yorkie's head in. All I can suggest is you watch your big dog around the Yorkie. His size is all the advantage he needs. |
Well I would definitely keep a close eye on them. But I would also suggest that you work with your big dog on the side. Letting him know that you are the pack leader. Here is a thread with some basics in it for doing that. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...ht=pack+leader |
I defintely would keep an eye on him, and not let them unsupervised. You may want to spend more time with him, as he might be feeling as if you don't love him. |
Is the Shar-pei neutered? If he is intact, then he has huge amounts of male hormones raging through his body. |
Yes he is neutered , is a great watchdog,and loving to us. However we question the risk because if something happened to our girl it would be devastating. |
I have a pug who is like that. She is spayed. But she just don't like anyone. So she has to be watched, and there have been some good fights between her and my 14 pound (nuetured) male Yorkie, that I have had to jump in on and litteraly peel them apart... BUT I would never re-home my pug. She is never left alone with any of the other dogs and is NEVER allowed around the small yorkies. We just deal with it and know how to handle her. Don't get me wrong...everynight she is on the couch with us, with my Chi and my 14lb yorkie, she just has to be watched. usually its a trigger over a treat, food, or a toy. Oh and her bed. NO ONE can go near her bed. She was my 1st and was spoiled and then we slowly added. She's 8 years old and she's not treated like the little baby anymore, so I can understand why she's so bitter. But I don't love her any less :) She's actually a very good dog. I love her very much! |
Arent Sharpeis known to be a little agressive? I had always wanted one but read that about them. I would put him in training |

Is LuLu spayed? Even though your SharPei is neutered, it could be the LuLu is getting ready to go into heat and he is reacting to that as well..... |
Please keep a close eye on them. I know of a small Yorkie male that was "attacked" by another dog. The little thing had absolutely NO bites on him, but died of a heart attack within minutes. He was less than 2 years old with no previous heart related health issues. The absolute fright was just too much for the poor wee Yorkie. |
We both probably would have a heart attack! |
