| Opinions Needed ASAP!!!! Okay-- So I have scheduled Rex's surgery for tomorrow for him to get neutered. He will be 6 months tomorrow. The thing is, I'm not sure if this is what I want to do. He is the most gorgeous Yorkie I have ever seen. He has one of those short noses and short leg and only weighs 2 pounds 10 ounces. When I bought him the breeder mentioned how people would pay to breed him. He is AKC registered. So-- he has not started lifting his leg nor has he started marking.... what should I do. I'm not 100% sure I would want to breed him, but I do plan on getting a girl Yorkie within the next year or so and I may want to breed them. I also know that I'd need to get the girl with a little more weight on her and that Rex will be the perfect size to breed with. Any opinions?!!??!??! |

| Breeding, and raising healthy well adjusted puppies, is certainly a serious business. While Yorkies are less likely to end up in the pound--less likely than lets say a pit bull--it doesn't change the fact that there are lots of pets out there, who are already out there, that need good homes. Your puppies may fill one of those homes that would have taken a rescue... Just a thought. Another thing to consider is, of course, whether of not you have the time to devote to the needs of several little ones, and also if you have the money to see them through their first few shots and check ups. If you're only planning to use your pup as a sire, while someone else does the rest, I would first make sure that the female's family is planning to be responsible with the puppies as well. My male, Theo, is not neutered. The reason for this is that he has so little personality already (haha) and I didn't want to risk it. Do to this, though, he foams at the mouth and chatters his teeth when he passes a female--which can be embarrassing--and pulls and tugs on his leash. It's up to you! If you choose to breed, just make sure that those pups go to forever homes. I don't know how I'd ever sell any of Theo's puppies... he's family. Good luck.

| I agree with KiKiPie and Breny. I also agree that breeding is a very involved process and carries with it a HUGE responsibility to lots of little lives. |

| If I get a female and breed the two-- I wouldn't sell the pups. I'm not so sure about letting him breed with someone else's female. |

| Well, I've about 100% sure I've decided not to have my 3 (yes 3!) neutered, simply because I am a huge chicken! I can't bear the thought of loosing one of them. I know there are risks involved which ever way you decide, but for me, I've decided not to neuter. Good luck with your decision. |

| Just do TONS of research and make sure you have the funds to start breeding. Both of your yorkies will have be tested for genetic defects (i.e. liver shunts, luxating patellas, etc.). I would consider getting your male tested right away and if it turns out that he DOES have any of genetic defects, then have him neutered. These defects can cause serious complications and you do NOT want these passed on to puppies. Best of luck in whatever you choose! |

| As a breeder myself, I would cancel the appt if I even thought I MIGHT want to breed him. You can do all the other things mentioned while you are waiting for him to mature then decide what you are going to do. |

| i have not had a lot of experience with little males , but the 3 I have been around 1 of them did not get fixed until a about 18 months old... and boy have we been sorry.... ( my son's male )..... he still marks everything .... My Oliver I got fixed at 7 months and he was just barely starting to raise his leg... he still raises his leg but does not mark.... My Samson still doesn't have anything to remove but if they don't show up by 9 months I promise we are going in afterthem... He is 4 1/2 months old now and I check everyday.... There is so much responsibility with breeding I choose to leave it to the experts.... I would feel so guilty bringing a little one into this world that had problems... I don't think I could live with myself .... just due to my ignorance. Good LUck with your decision .... but I have NO doubt what I would do... |

| If you have doubts I would hold off on the neuter. Just know that breeding dogs mark and hump. Also there are health reasons why it is good to neuter

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | My male does mark BUT he wears a belly band. He's the sweetest little guy as well. I may be lucky, but he only humps when there is a female in heat. So I have no problems with him. He's awesome ! |
