my 'night-owl' yorkie...what to do?! hi hi ... so my kikko is a complete night owl! his schedule is completely flipped around. during the day he's at home and my mom's with him while i'm at work and takes care of him. when i come home I play with him a little bit give him dinner and stuff. .. just the regular thing .... my problem is at night ... he gets this BURST of energy. he'll be running around his xpen with his toys, jumping from his bed to the other end. Even if I bring him onto my bed, thinking he'd calm down a bit ... NO! he's even more fiesty and jsut wants to play! I don't know if he's taking too many doggie naps or what, but at 3 am its like he's had doggy coffee or soemthing. i'd like any suggestions or if anyone experiences anything similar, i'd like to know what you do and how to deal. he's been sick a lot and its great to see that he's got all this energy, but its tiring me out just as much as worrying about him used to! hahaha. |
Make him tired before he goes to bed, play and take him for a walk in the evenings, even just a few rounds in the yard. My Chanel used to be like that when she was little, i had her in a baby playpen during the night, she used to wake up, and start bouncing from one end to the other, she used to wake us up between 2 and 3 ... it was "party time for her" so i kept her awake in the evenings, no more napping after dinner, it worked for us. Now they both sleep in the bed with us, before she goes to sleep, we play for a while. Good luck. |
Chelsey is right. They are terriers and because of that they need lots of exercise. We go for a walk every evening that it is possible. Due to our weather, there are times we just can't do it. In nice weather, we do more than one walk.:D |
My little guy is the same way!!! It's SO obnoxious. It's been so cold lately that if we try to go on a walk, he just sits there and shivers... even with a sweatshirt on. So until it gets warmer, no walks for him. Hopefully after we start walking again he will sleep through the night. |
I had this problem with Jake (funny enough after he got sick and then made a full and healthy recovery). I found a long walk on a night to be most helpful. He was always pumped for about 30 mins to an hour after his walk, but then would calm right down for about 3 - 4 hrs. Failing that ... try a 2nd dog ... really helps to keep them both worn out :) |
I would recommend a long walk or a good play session. It will take a little while to calm down after, but he should go to sleep after that. Good luck! :) |

I did have some success last night ... so I came homre straight after work, and boy is kikko lucky... its cold right now, so there was a lot of chasing me around the house, attempting to play fetch, more tag around the house, a little training session, playing with my parents' yorkie .. BUT it took 3 HOURS before I even saw a yawn!!!!! after that though, he was knocked out for a good 4-5 hours! it was funny. he still wakes up a little in the night b/c the cold air (it bothers his CT) and i think he's learning the bed is the place to sleep not play unlike his xpen. lol. |
