Alpha Dog...Help to Understand Alpha Dog...just what does that mean. I need help to understand the behavior. :thumbs up |
Top dog! dont' take nutin' from no body or nothing! I know I am not much help for ya. just had to phrase it that way.:D I am not good with wording so I will let someone else state it for ya. I got 2 of them here that are fighing for that position and I am going to win the position my self if it is the last thing I do. |
Alpha dog is top dog, the leader of the pack. Dog's natural habitat is to live in packs where there is always a leader. A dog regards their human family as their pack, since their human family is all they know. You must ALWAYS be alpha dog. The animals will naturally fit into their alpha order of the family once the leader has been established. Again the leader must always be you or another adult human member of the family. If you do not establish your place as alpha dog, the dog will never be able to be trained/controlled. Dogs are like little kids--if you let them get away with anything and never establish who's the boss--you end up with uncontrollable, spoiled, bratty children. Same thing with dogs, except you end up with uncontrollable, spoiled, bratty dogs. |

Too funny...well put! Now that we have added Kenzi to the family, I have had to be referee between Kenzi and Jilly. What is the best way to handle the behavior. Jack and Jill got along real well so I was not prepared for the disagreements. Scared me at first. Is it because two females don't get along as a rule? |

It has worked out very well for us. Jazzy and Mickey love one another but Mickey definitly follows Jazzy lead for everything. I am so happy I took this approach, since Mickey's first day home, because personality wise--Mickey is much more adventurous and much less shy, than Jazzy. Had I not made sure Jazzy still retained her higher alpha status--Mickey would have walked all over Jazzy. Then I would have had a miserable Jazzy and much fighting between the two. Instead I am blessed with 2 dogs that get along great and truly love each other. Just a thought, but maybe you could reinforce your older dogs higher alpha order and set the little in place regarding her alpha order. |
