Just got my baby...Please help with question!! I just spent my first night with my new little man!! I am in love. He was so good last night and didn't keep me up..I kept him up actually!! Poor thing, he is so tired today...I brought him to work with me to keep me company and we have a vet appointment (and yes, we had to show off a bit) I do have a serious question: Maybe someone has had a similar experience or knows a bit more than I do but my puppy won't drink water...He is not dehydrated because I continually use a syringe and give him a good amount but I am really worried to ever leave him alone for any amount of time...I don't want him to get too dehydrated. I figured I would ask the vet today what to do..add sugar? give him time (btw today is his 2 month bday)? I add water to his food to help him chew and I figure it gives him more water without me having to force it on him!?! Any advice would be so appreciated....Thanks in advance! Lauren |
Congrats on the new baby! Yes I would add a small amt. of sugar bc he is so young. But I would also ask your vet! I had to add some sugar to my girls water when I first got them. |
I'm sure others will advise you, but your puppy is so young. He really should have been left with his mommy 2-4 more weeks. I also would go with your Vets suggestions and what the more experienced breeders here will advise. He is so young, not sure of his size, but don't let him get too worn out. Be aware of hypoglycema and it's signs. Be sure to have Nutri-cal or something similiar on hand. |
Congratulations on your new pup. Carol & Buddy |
He is pretty small but seems to have energy but being so young loves to sleep...He eats well..not alot but he loves to eat during the day..I will try to add some sugar to his water to see if he will be more enticed to drink it, does anyone add butter milk to the food...I had a friend who did that with her pup and it seemed to give it lots of energy! Thanks so much for the help everyone! I'm going to find out how to add his little picture to an avatar! Hopefully... |
CoNgRaTuLaTiOnS on your new puppy!!!! I'm sure you are just delighted. On his water intake, these little guys are so tiny that they really don't need much water. If you are adding water to his food and/or if you are giving him canned food, then he should not need much more water than that. Adding some kyro syrup to his water will not only entice him to drink more, but it will also prevent him from getting low blood suger, which so many yorkie puppies under 12 weeks tend to experience. Just make sure he is eating regularly and eating well and he should be fine!!!!!!! GOOD LUCK with your new baby! Keep us updated on his progress. Oh yeah, when do we get to see pics?! :2photo: :2photo: :2photo: |

I would not suggest adding buttermilk to his food. For some extra nourishment, you could add some cottage cheese or plain yogurt to his food. A puppy of his age needs to sleep A LOT and as often as he wants to sleep. If he doesn't get enough sleep, his blood sugar is liable to drop rapidly and that can be deadly. You need to make sure he is getting plenty of sleep, staying warm, and eating regularly to prevent his bloodsugar from dropping. |
2 Attachment(s) Well I am glad to hear he needs alot of sleep because I enjoy mine too..we should get along great...I will definitly add some Caro to his water and see if he will like the yogort..I'm sure he will love it. He is so sweet and I am so excited to have him in my life. I think he will be a bit spoiled but thats why I have him, to love him and baby him!! He is a good work companion. He is just napping presently but he likes to get out for a few minutes here and there to eat and use the rest room and show off to everyone with his little teddy bear face... |
The second picture is of the baby and his mommy! She is a sweetheart...Any name suggestions? I have been calling him Jo Jo because my 2 year old niece loves the little show... |

Well, I am obsessed with the name PeeWee for a little male. But I like unusual names that no one else has. I'm naming my next male PeeWee....but that won't be for a REEEEEEEEALY long time from now considering both of mine are still puppies. So, I vote for PeeWee. lol |

OMG! What a little dollbaby!!!!! He is absolutely AdOrAbLe!!!! |
PeeWee is absolutely adorable! Your babies are too cute! I can see why everyone is in LOVE with these Yorkies!! |
I also like the name Dexter. |
congrats! :congrats: Your furbaby is a real cutie! My little boy was only 9 1/2 wks when I got him and he has done fine with no sugar crashes but I too think it is wise to always be prepared in case of a hypoglycemic episode. Teddy just started refusing to drink water so I started putting a few kibbles in a small bowl of water and he readily laps the water up to get to the kibbles! :D Yorkies are smart and I have to constantly figure out how to outsmart my furbaby!;) As for a name I have seen a lot of nice names for boys here at YT. If I had another male I would probably name him Sir Winston...Winston for short. |
Well, my little guy is finally drinking water..apparently, he just likes it warm!! What a little stinker! Now though, he is wanting to eat my roommates dog's food..it's not puppy food though and he isn't seeming to be at all interested in his food..anyone had any particular issues about very picky eaters? What can I give him? Is it dangerous for him to eat just a little bit each day..like not even a handful! I am getting worried... Any help please!! Lauren |
You have probably already solved the water problem, but back when Maizee wouldn't drink her water, I would mix milk with water and she would drink it until it was gone. Then, I just started weening her off the milk and she was fine from then. As for the name, I was about this close | | to getting a boy yorkie, but Maizee was not fond of him :| I had so many names picked out too. My two favorites were Murphy and Maddox. :) I'm stuck on "M" names. . . sorry |
Oops. Just saw the previous post. Scratch the water dilemma. Sorry :s Don't you love it when they are so picky? :) |
