I've never had 2 dogs at once before... Ruthie has really settled in here it seems - she is SOOO different than Oscar was as a young puppy! It's so funny to watch them interact, stealing each other's bones (even when there's 4 bones laying around, they have to have what the other one has), playing tug of war with toys, etc. My question is... when they're playing, how do I know if they're getting too rough? I know not to leave them to play unsupervised, but when I'm watching them they go NUTS. They're biting or 'mouthing' each other, chasing, wrestling... and I don't want either of them to get hurt, but I don't want to keep stopping them if they're having fun. I haven't heard any yelping or anything yet... I don't know - what's normal playful behavior? How do I get them to settle down when things are getting a little nuts? |
They'll yelp if they get hurt, and then usually the other one will stop and then go to the hurt one as if to appologize. And then the fun is on again. They usually doln't want to hurt each other. And it will most likely be the younger one that hurts the older one because they have not yet learned how hard they can bite. |

My Annika is very vocal and I would always tell Tiger to "stop it" whenever she yelps . . . until I found out from my daughter she is such a drama queen. Tiger barely touches her and yet she wants to pretend she is hurting :p I finally got to witness it    She sure can be devious. |
thanks for the reassurance... I haven't heard any yelps or screams yet so I think they're doin ok. And it's true, I'm just as worried about Oscar cause I've seen Ruthie biting at his tail! |
kizzy and kacee do the same thing. I wouldnt worry about it as much if Kizzy wasnt so much bigger than Kacee. hubby and I both agreed this evening that Kizzy seems to have actually calmed down a lot just since we brought kacee home. She use to not want me to pet her much and would run sometimes if I reached to rub her head or something, now she comes right up to me and rares up on me to pet her and if I reach out to pet her she lets me more now. I'm wondering if its because she is scared kacee will get more attn which she hasnt. I still pick up kizzy all along and I rarely hold kacee but kizzy sees me carrying kacee to go potty and she sometimes will just stand at the door and act like she is waiting for me to pick her up. But once in a while I tell her to stop it when she seems to be playing too rough, Kacee doesnt yelp when she is playing but she did today. Sometimes Kizzy will jump up on her and she is so much bigger I make her stop then. I feel that is too much weight on kacee. anyway. they play like all the rest and they do have fun. |
They will let you know if one or the other gets hurt...Peanut and Lexie play fight all the time, one time when I just got her, she was 4 months, they were playing tug of war, her bottom baby tooth came out, Peanut didn't do anything to her it just happen, Lexie pouted for 20 min...she thought Peanut had hurt her, you would have thought someone shot her they why she acted, then she was over it...:p |
