Default how do you know where your dog came from (pet store)

What I mean is several years ago I went to the pet store at our mall and was looking at a pup. I wanted her and I asked them where they got there puppies from they said a local breeder. i said a mill? They told me NO a breeder that they use. so Stupidly I did get the pup. And I hate to say it but she was awful very mean even as a puppy. I had to fin her a new home becouse she was very food aggerssive. She attacked me a few times when i was playing with her with a treat and drew blood. Is it becouse she was from a mill and bred badly. were the lieing? and how do you find out where they get the dogs from?

If it is Petland, they def. get it from a puppy mill. Seems like you got a puppy mill baby. Oh, and of course they will say it's a breeder, but no reputable breeder would sell to a pet store. Why should they?
I made the mistake of petting a Yorkie at Petland before, and boy that little furball was vicious. He bit my finger and would not let go!!!

I have learned so much from this site since I bought Buddy. He was from
a private pet store (not a chain like Petland, Petco etc.). I knew nothing
about puppy mills or backyard breeders. I just knew I loved the look, temperment and size of the Yorkshire Terrier! I picked him out because he
was a little larger then the others and he looked like he was crying. He was
3.5lbs at 3 1/2 mos when I bought him. I was told he was breed in Budapest,
Hungary. I can not read his papers, they are in Hungarian. He also bit me several times when he was a puppy. I read many books thinking I purchased
a crazed dog. He was full of energy but seemed to learn very quickly. Have
patience, they do not know the difference between your fingers, feet or other parts of your body. You have to show them their own chew toys and
teach them that is what they CHEW, not you! They are very smart pups. With patience Buddy learned everything I set out to teach him. Today he is
a big baby 13.7lbs and ready to give love any time I want it. We are working
on his not being aggresive with larger dogs. He hates them! Puppies do not
know from anything unless the owner teaches them, just like a baby. Have
fun with your little one and have the patience to teach him what is right and what is wrong and you will be amazed at the transformation. Good Luck

Maya my Pom is from a private pet store AKC registered. Her paper show she is from Missouri so I'm sure it's a puppy mill. While Maya has been healthy, she is much bigger than standard 12 1/2 lbs and she is very territorial. You cannot but your hand under my bed without her trying to snap at you. I cannot get meds down her without her snapping or even clean her eyes. She has mellowed a bit with Cali around and even lets her under the bed andgoes in her playpen. I know most people would have given her away but I take pet ownership very seriously and just know how to deal with her. Somedays she can be a real sweetheart. I feel it's not her fault just bad breeding.

There are always exceptions. I got my pup from a small family-owned pet store that has been in business for more than fifty years.

They do get their puppys from nice people, and never have more than a few dogs or a few kittens at any time.

If you visit this store, the puppys are in very large pens with wire covers over the top. People can watch these little guys play, but they can't reach in and touch or handle them. The rule is that if you are honestly interested in purchasing one of these puppies - after washing your hands (with soap) - you can hold it for a while.

I got my little Yorkie there - and the owner and his son (who raised Yorkies, themselves, in the past) kept me there so long telling me how to take care of it that I didn't think I was ever going to be able to go home. They gave me a lot of paperwork on taking care of the new little guy, free food, and gave me their home phone number and asked me to call anytime 24/7. They also took him in the back - cleaned his little bottom and face, combed his hair, and put bows all over him.

They told me that they knew the person who had had these pups personally and had gone to Yorkie things together in the past.

A few weeks later, the pups papers arrived and the owners name was on it.
I found her E-mail and contacted her immediately. She answered me and told me that my pup came from the last litter that her dogs were going to have. (They had had four litters and were ready to lay back and enjoy life.) The mother weighed 12 pounds and the father weighed 4 1/2 pounds. She said she had moved to Montana and lived in a rural area, and told me that few people were willing to drive out to where she lived, and half of them got lost if they tried. So, she brought her puppies more than 300 miles to her friend (at the pet store) to sell for her..... all four litters.

She told me all about the parents, their personalities, their size, etc., and E-mailed me pictures.

My pup is 10 months old now (totally happy and healthy) and I contacted her again recently. She said that she knows where most of the puppies from this litter are and has heard from the people who purchased them. My pup weighs about 9 pounds now. She said another weighs 4 1/2 pounds - and another weighs about 6 pounds. And they are all in loving homes and doing well. Her niece has one of them.

When I asked at the pet store what my pup would weight, they didn't tell me the size of the parents, but told me it should weigh between 5 and 10 pounds....a fair and honest answer.

The owners at the pet store told me they have about four friends whose puppies they regularly sell. And, he said "with word of mouth, they often sell puppies for other people as well. And - their puppies always come from homes (like yours and mine). He said that people can often sell all but one of two of their pups - so these are the ones he sells for them.

The point is that "all pet stores" are not selling puppies from puppy mills. I pesonally suspect that it is the larger chain stores that are doing this.

*** The particular pet store that I am talking about has a very good reputation and few people would have any problems buying a puppy there.

This may come off sounding harsh, but why would a reputable breeder sell their puppies to a pet store? I don't believe that any breeder, who actually cared about the welfare of their puppies would do so.

Not to mention that the breeder used a dame who was entirely to large for the breed standard, but that is a whole other story.

No pet store is going to admit that their puppies come from a puppymill, why would they?? So of course they all lie and they all say we get the puppies from local breeders. There was a challenge from the humane sociey that challenged people to go to the petstores and ask for all this information that the humane society wanted to see whether or not the pups were from puppy mills. I can't remember the site, someone posted it on here awhile ago...

There are a few honest pet store owners out there. She might sell to them because she knows them and knows that they will see that they go to good homes. The breeder might not want to mess with the adverising etc, especially if she is in a remote area in Montanna. People from the North East frequently do not truly comprehend the vast unpopulated areas that we have here in the western States.

Why would Snow Wa make all of that up?

Well, the idea is that if the breeder cares about the pups, she is going to want them to go to good homes. Anyone can buy pups at a petstore, and there is no guarantee that the pups are going to good homes. The petstore could be a pet palace, but that is not where the pups are going to spend their lives. At pet stores the owners do not screen the customers.

Me - SnowWa!!!!

I definitely didn't make my story up. I got my pup from the small petstore (here in Spokane) last November on my way home from work. And, I have him today - a healthy happy little dog at 10 or 11 months of age.

Remember, I said that this is a family-owned pet store. This store existed forever here in Spokane -- long before Petco and Petsmart even existed.

I remember years ago when this store was run by the father. Today, he is still around, but older, and a not-so-young, grown up son (or two sons) are pretty much in charge.

This store has never changed locations - it sells pet supplies, grooms, and usually has a few puppies or kittens for sale....not a lot of them by any means.

I paid $850 for my pup --which, I think, was a fair price. He's larger than standard (and they told me he might weigh between 5 and 10 pounds) - but let me tell you, he is a very handsome little guy -- very Yorkie!! And, he is laid back, but playful and affectionate, and not a barker. He has won the hearts of my whole neighborhood as well as my family. We have never had a health problem of any kind. And, he was a good size and eating very well when I got him.

He told me about the owner when I bought the pup (said she was a friend of his - they met each other years ago because they were both Yorkie owners) - but I would never have gotten to know her unless I tracked her down from the papers that I received in the mail several weeks later. I was pleasantly surprised when she returned my E-mail - and we have E-mailed several times back and forth since then.

Of course, I would have no reason to tell you anything other than the truth. I totally agree with all of you about the larger chain pet stores and puppymills, etc.

Just wanted to point out that here or there - you may run across an exception to the "petstore rule."

Well if one were friends with the owner of a privately owned petstore, then one would trust that the owner would see that they went to good homes.

A small privately owned pet store might screen the customers. Did your breeder make a visit to your home to make sure that everything you told her was the truth. Did they do a criminal background check to make sure that you hadn't been imprisoned for animal abuse? Mine didn't.

All the screening is good in theory, but how widely is it practiced?

Not trying to be argumentative.

Even breeders who sell their own puppies have no idea whether they picked a good home for their puppies or not. Its just a feeling they have and hopefully its a good one. I sold only one of my puppies to someone I did not know. I met the woman (mother) and her three children. We spoke on the phone, emailed each other and met twice in person. I think she was a good placement for my puppy. But do I really know for sure???? Lets hope so.
