Do little Yorkies need special Care
 
We are getting a small pup- the breeder said she will be about 3.5 pounds at maturity. What special things do I need to know. Bailey is 4.5 pounds at 7 months so I know about general Yorkie stuff. Just wanted to know if there is anything special for the wee little ones?

Hi and congrats on getting a new furbaby. My Georgie is 3.5 lbs full grown, and I don't think it's a huge difference. However having said that there are some things that I have been a little more careful with i.e. making sure he eats, but I am sure you do the same with Bailey. Georgie was 1lb when I brought him home, I was just extra careful with everything still am really. Good luck and again congrats:D

I have always had yorkies, but Hobbs is our first wee little one! I think that wee little ones do need different and special care compared to the bigger ones. Are you going to crate train him/her? I think that little ones feel comfortable having a "den" area that is safe and that they can retreat to when they get nervous. Also, stock up on a tube of NutriCal...give it to your new pup 2 to 3 times a day. Make sure he/she is eating well, too. At this point, it doesn't really matter what they're eating, as long as they're eating. If the only thing it will eat at this point is McDonald's hamburgers, then feed it that. Then, as it gets older and more healthy, you can start feeing him/her the good dog food that they need. Don't get me wrong, if it will eat dog food when you bring it home, you need to feed it dog food. Also, you have to be especially careful handling her bc he/she will be so fragile! Don't let it jump off the couch or bed bc it will be liable to break a leg! Basically, just treat it like a little baby and have fun with her! Can't wait to see pics!

Congrats on your new furbaby. Yorkies tend not to know how big or small they are, and they love jumping around, especially from high ground - don't know why....but they do. Make sure you have some stairs for your furniture or bed so that your baby doesn't fly off the furniture.:D

My Yorkie - a little bigger than some Yorkies (8.5 pounds) -- definitely does not need any special treatment at all. He's just a playful, happy, affectionate little dog.

Unfortunately - for those who do get the 'tiny little Yorkies" --- there are some considerations that I don't have to worry about. Very small Yorkies can't get off and on the furniture like mine can. And, you have to be more careful about "stepping on them" (which I never have to worry about). You may also have to be more careful about them playing with little children who might be too rough.......not a problem with mine at all. And, of course, there are often health problems (not always - but often) that the larger dogs don't have.

Tiffany is 2lbs 7 oz. and she keeps me so nervous. I am so afraid of her getting hurt being so small and fragile. But I worry more than I should I think. She fell off the back of the couch last week and was perfectly fine! Just keep an eye on your baby! You will have so much fun with your little one! :D

I have heard this before. What type of health problems are associated with smaller furbabies?

My Beanie baby is only 3.2 pounds @ 1 yr. 3 months and is a bundle of energy! Jac, who is 7 lbs., is my tough guy but Beanzie keeps up!

The only thing that I have to be careful of is taking her on walks. Bigger dogs, which are most of them, have tried to attack her!:eek: Their owners are always surprised and say it's never happened before! I think the bigger dogs think she's a squirrel rather than a dog. It's happened 3 times (she's never been hurt)...so now I only walk her when there are NO other dogs are around. If I do happen to see another dog I pick her up! (Jac too!) People try to assure me that their dog is harmless so I just blame it on my dog saying that he will attack their dog...it' seems to work.

Please be careful with your little one. It only take one bite for serious injury or death!

Sissy stopped growing at 8 moths, 4 lbs. She is able to get up/down from the couch, but will not go down stairs as is afraid cause she fell down them once at 4 months old. She gets down from things by "flying". Scares me to death, but she does it all the time and is apparently skilled as she has never hurt herself. I am very watchful of her in the yard because she is small and can easily squeeze under places you wouldn't think of and I'm careful of predator birds (hawks) that I occasionally see. Her paws have been stepped on a couple times, so now we shuffle when she is on the floor.

The key to getting a a healthy yorkie, big or small, is getting one from a reputable breeder. You need to beware of breeders who advertise "teacup" yorkies, bc this is a sign that they are only in it for the money. But, if you get a puppy from a reputable breeder, and you are comfortable with their living conditions and the way the parents look, then your wee little puppy will probably be healthy. Make sure you get a puppy from someone who offers a health guarantee, too. I also think that wee little yorkies need to stay with their mom longer (12 weeks at least) than larger puppies (who can usually go around 8 weeks). Hobbs is barely 3 lbs at 8 months and he has never had any health issues. My parents yorkie, on the other hand, is 12 lbs and often has seizures and has bad knees. So, I think a lot of it depends more on the breeder and less on the size.

I iam getting the puppy from the same breeder I got Bailey from. The conditions are good and mom and dad are healthy (actually its Baileys dad and aunts litter). She does offer a health guarentee fro 1 year for genetics and pet insurance for the frst 6 weeks. I ordered 3 tubes of Nutrical yesterday and am having DH build some stairs. Hope I'm covered:D

My little yorkie grew to 6 lbs but she was very little when I brought her home only 12 ounces. I just fixed her whatever she would eat and just tried to make sure she ate regularly. I also gave her nutrical

Wow..so the saying "life is like a box of chocolates" applies to Yorkies final size too!!!;)
